Safeway's annual steak sale is ongoing until christmas day. We just got a three hundred dollar peice for about 180 i believe. Cut it into about a dozen ribs and maybe 15 thick steaks. Fyi
I would absolutely go buy a slab of steaks for 50% off from Safeway.
My point was that if you have to spend $50 on Safeway prices before you get the discount on the steaks, then you're not actually getting much of a discount on the steaks, if you're even getting any.
When I switched from shopping at Safeway to shopping at Winco regularly, my weekly shopping trip went from ~$140 down to ~$100. All the regular items are just that much cheaper.
Yeah, but there’s a minimum purchase amount of other items at Safeway. I also had to stop going to Safeway because I didn’t see any meat worth buying for years. The quality of Fry’s beef is definitely location specific. Bell and Tatum is usually really good, but oddly the super fry’s on Shea and Tatum isn’t (they’re actually always fully sold out of whatever meat is on special when I go there).
Yeah it really depends on the store, what time you go, the quality of the butchers, and if it’s been picked over. I’ve bought some incredible ribeyes from my fry’s even back when they were $4.99-$5.99/lb. I’ve gotten countless t-bones with a full size filet on them, so basically a porterhouse, for $5-7/lb.
Bad news: you got a $180 piece for $180. They wildly inflate the list price so when they put the “SALE!” stickers on, it looks like a deal. For example, Safeway’s USDA Choice boneless ribeye has an alleged regular price of $28.99 a pound, currently “discounted” to $16.99 a pound. Meanwhile, right now Walmart has the same grade of the same cut for $14.87 a pound. That’s right, the price Safeway tells you is a great deal is 14% more than their biggest competitor’s regular* price.
idk about you but I buy things based on their unit price. I see this as $7 bone in ribeye, which is an okay price in 2025. We're not going to see $5 bone-in rib again anytime soon.
Ah, so that’s the deal OP was excited over; all I saw was the regular steak prices with Safeway’s usual price shenanigans. It still isn’t quite as screaming a deal as they make it out to be, though. Smart & Final has the full bone-in roasts for $9.99 a pound, no minimum purchase necessary. So, it’s a decent deal, but not what I would consider a great one.
The quality of meat at Walmart VS Safeway is not comparable though. Safeway is one of the few stores that the beef in case has never been frozen and they still have more traditional meat cutters as well. I know you can’t say that with Walmart.
Walmart be selling roadkill for $16/pd and people will think its good quality. The thought of buying non-processed food from Walmart is a terrifying prospect, they are bottom of the barrel.
If you don’t mind me asking, how objectively is never-frozen beef cut in-store better than the same USDA grade of previously frozen steaks butchered off-premises? At home, I stick my steak in the freezer for at least an hour before I cook it, and it comes out pretty damn good.
Directly into the pan, no thawing. I stick mine in the freezer as soon as I get home and cook it directly from solid as a brick. I’m working on seasoning sequence. Last time I seasoned it before the flip but my skillet was too hot and I smoked up the kitchen. I think if you’re cooking it after an hour I would salt it before it goes in the freezer.
Instructions:
Freeze your steak at least an hour
Heat your cast iron pan on medium-high for at least 10 minutes and set your oven to 200 degrees
Oil up the pan
Cook the steak until it releases, flip, repeat
Stick in oven until cooked to your liking (130 degrees as pictured)
This is the reverse of our favorite reverse sear method. Fridge open to dry one night. One hour on the counter. In the toaster oven on low until 5 degrees less than done, then flash sealed in screaming hot pan.
it’s select grade which is the lowest grade you can buy a steak at the store. virtually no marbling. the choice in the past was $2 per lb higher though not advertised. This year choice is like $16 which can be beaten. As others have said Fry’s is nearly as inexpensive for choice grade.
Safeway, you mean the grocery store that sells meat for twice the price of any other place (like Fry’s) and then if you have a shoppers card you get it half off?
It’s $6.99 a pound but you have to spend $50 bucks on other stuff.
How do you go grocery shopping without spending $50?
Costco $1.50 hot dog combo challenge ez
And then $50 on toilet paper
I mean I don't. But the deal becomes way worse if I have to spend $50 on Safeway prices before I can get it.
I'll just go to winco.
Have you tried Winco meat? I've heard it's good but haven't tried it. I'm not a fan of Safeway either.
Go get em tiger. If you don't spend $50 there then you obviously wouldn't be buying a slab of steaks either lol.

I keep trying to incorporate WinCo into my shopping routine, love that it's always so chill in there.
So you would easily spend $50 to qualify for the beef sale. Dear god lol
i’m a single guy in my early 20s. I spend like $20 a week on groceries lol. I work hybrid and my days in office my company caters lunch.
But you would go buy bulk beef on sale?
personally i wouldn’t
Lol I know
I was told $25
My safeway was 25$. Alcohol excluded. Bought one for a roast. Used the s.o.'s account for another and cut into steaks.
How’s the quality. I can’t decide if I want a prime rib or steaks.

Huh, some are def $25. I just bought one on Wednesday after getting only buy 3 get 3 of soda cans at $10.99/ea

Mine is $25 but I mean it’s pretty easy to spend $50 on groceries now.
Safeway is owned by Albertsons, FYI
Has been for a while now and?
As I stated - FYI. Some people were comparing the two. Since you already knew that, good for you.
$25 where I am, bought 2 this week.
How’s the quality?
No complaints so far. Haven't cooked it yet.
I ended up getting a 11 pound roast for $57. On the app they have a code to save $30 when you spend $75. Killer deal. Save30
Anyone wanna buy and go half?!?
I question the value of the "$300" cut of meat you paid for at a Safeway
I like the buy 6 bottles get 25% off sale at Fry’s
Nice, thx for sharing. 🎄❤️💚🎅
Fry’s is $7.97/lb rib roast with no other purchase necessary and they usually have better beef. Need to clip the digital coupon.
It's 6.99/lb at Safeway/Albertsons same grade of beef.

The selection at my fry’s when I went on Thursday was not great. Small spinalis sections.

Word. At my Safeway we had the butcher cut it to the size we wanted. Couldn't have done that at Walmart.

Freezer for an hour and then straight to a hot pan? Do you season before or after freezer? can you list the instructions, the steak looks fire

Most grocery stores always have some sort of sale going on. You gotta be unlucky to not catch one.
“ACKTSHHUAAALLLYYY”
Thank you! Partner called from there absolutely giddy with glee! Roflmao!
The quality is awful, unfortunately.

The one I got was choice from Safeway, this is a screenshot from someone above

Through out my 10 years or so on reddit there has been post that come in clutch more than ever... this is one of them. Shoutout to OP!
I bought some from frys at 7.98 and was excited. Quality isn't as good as Costco but just too much this year compare to last.
honestly. just go to the local carniceria for better meat at a lower price.
Nah, it's not lower... You aren't getting a rib roast at a Carneceria for 6.99/lb
Garbage meats. Buy local.

Yeah, thanks, but no thanks.
