Have people forgotten that, in languages other than english, singular they is barely a thing? I'm french and we use 'Il/Elle' instead of 'Iels' (Singular plurial), because the latter is unpopular and hard to pronounce casually. It's easy to see someone that doesn't originally speak english making this error if even people raised talking english do.
"It's not slang. It's a synonym" What, so eye contact is equivalent to literally gouging out someone's own eyeballs and them holding them with their hands???
(Also phrases that are both things at once are a thing, those aren't mutually exclusive. And slang doesn't always mean it's necessarily contemporary informal language, either)

if youre new to the stream, “held her/his eyes” is short for “kept eye contact”, im just using the slang
