Totally agree. I left some photos last time of businesses that took more than 48 hours to clear snow, and they were open. Let’s put in some effort park slope
fun facts, Ginkgos are actually really amazing botanically speaking. They are living fossils having existed for over 270 million years, have no living relatives (Ginkgo biloba is the only species left in its entire phylum), and practically everything about them is completely unique especially the leaf shape. They're also very resilient in poor growing conditions. They're dioecious meaning each individual tree is either male or female, males produce pollen, females produce seeds, (they're just fleshy seeds, not fruit, as ginkgo is a gymnosperm and evolved before true fruit was a thing). It's thought that the smell, which comes from butyric acid in the seed coat, evolved to attract ancient, now extinct animals including dinosaurs to consume, then disperse the seeds. The seeds are also edible by humans once the outer pungent seed coat is removed and they're properly cooked. Ginkgo "nuts" are commonly consumed in some asian cultures, so if you see someone collecting the seeds, this is likely why. Overall a very cool and interesting species.
Do you know how it works if the owner is leasing the place to tenants and is never around (presumably living in a different state)? Are the tenants then liable?
I'm pretty sure the city would hold the property owner liable, and then the owner could hold the tenant liable if there's clauses covering that in their lease. Like if the lease says that the tenant has to keep the walks clear, etc.
don't be an ass. to win a suit you must prove negligence, like failing to clear ice within a reasonable time after a storm and when conditions reasonably allow it.
now, if it's days later and someone hasn't cleared, it's a different story.
I get spikes that go over my shoes by winter walking. Low profile model. Keep in mind that they can damage certain floors so try to only use them outside. Without them I would have fallen many times, with them I can run on ice (not that I recommend it, but I’ve done it).
This. The goddamn audacity of businesses to remain open AND expect patronage but not clear the sidewalks. It’s so treacherous on certain blocks along 7th.
I think I’ll not do it just to rebel against the whole sanctimonious, prissy tone here. Last one caught a lot of us by surprise. I was sick. And it froze solid by the time I could take action. So maybe I’ll just fucking sit on my ass out of spite tonight.

This!! & also clean up after the ginko trees!! Those things are ruining my life.

+a million to this. It's like a minefield trying to avoid those.
they're so beautiful, but smell awful 😭
its a very distinctive pungent smell, I personally think it just adds to their charm
Pick up your dog’s poop while you’re at it!
Why? You can’t even see it in the snow
We know people who’ve been injured on icy sidewalks. Can’t they sue homeowners?
Yes, it's the property owner's responsibility.

Got it, thanks!!
No idea. I'm sure both would be sued in any case.

Yes it’s generally many days around here
My landlord is a jackass and only does it days after.

Last week I saw lots of salt at Tarzians and I'd guess Leopoldi's and some grocery stores as well have it. Pet stores sometimes have salt as well.
BUY YAK TRAX FOR YOUR SHOES. People are irresponsible and won’t salt. Protect yourself.
Seems like some of my neighbors didn’t see your Reddit post
Does anyone know the going rate for shoveling a walkway and stoop?
Shovel, then a tiny bit of salt for what is left.
Also shove the whole sidewalk and not a halfassed small path.
No.
Use a pet friendly mix and/or sand.
destroys dogs feet. use something besides that poison that heats up salt. cat litter is better
They make pet safe salt that works fine
What about the sure safe paws?

You can hire someone to shovel for you. That or a lawsuit coming your way if someone’s get injured. Breaking any bone is no joke.
A broken bone will heal. Being too precious to know when someone is just being harmlessly cranky on Reddit is incurable.
Rage bait
I stand with you against humorless scolds everywhere
Thanks. But, sigh, who are we against so many people drunk on their delusions of virtue?
what a sicko
It's Mamdani's fault.
