Are these giant kuhlis or just really large females? I can’t tell.

  • The two up front are most likely P. myersi, giant kuhli loaches.

That girl looks like she could actually be P. alternans or another species! Loaches are very poorly defined, and IMO poorly studied.

    Whooooaaaaaa

    She is absolutely gorgeous!

  • Pangio semicincta is one of the large banded types, like Pangio myersi (which is often called the Giant Kuhli Loach). So your fish almost certainly would be one of those two species.

The myersi species usually has quite distinct, regular markings that are recognizable beyond just size considerations. Summing up from scientific literature, the max length is 10cm SL, presence of 8-11 broad quadrangular regular black bars (don't count nose bar) on an orange background, entirely black caudal fin or with large black loose blotch and subterminal black bar or row of spots.

The P. semicincta have several species confused under that name, according to the literature. They also have dark bars like myersi but can have orange spots on their back and/or side, which can lead to a sort of "H" shape bar design in some individuals. Patterns can vary between individuals and populations.

All that said, Pangio semicincta seems to be more common in the hobby in the USA (not sure where you're located), and to my eye, those look like P. semicincta.

Welcome to the confusing world of Pangio IDing! Some species are easy to ID, some not so much.

  • I agree with the other comments; those are pangio myersi AKA giant kuhli. You can tell by the very thin orange/yellow bands, as well as their size
