does anyone notice the stripped come out more during the day then black kuhlis? my striped are always out and about being silly. but I RARELY see the black ones. most the time I just catch the tail end of the zoom away.

  • Definitely notice this! I almost always am able to find both striped ones, but rarely see any of the black ones. I wonder what causes this!

What is your set up? Im thinking mine just blend in like crazy. I had a pile of rocks for the kuhli in one of my corners and they are always slinking around the rocks. I added a hide thinking I'd see them more but I think it did the exact opposite.

Heavily planted and they’ve burrowed everywhere, if you look on my profile there’s pics but only one pic of the black one! I watch closely enough that they don’t blend in, the stripes just seem to be more active and brave!

Same with mine! I find my black ones all laid out rarely. As soon as they feel anyone coming they take off. Most the time I see them when I am feeding with live food. But they do help with keeping the snails in check. If I can find more stripped ones ima add more of them and see how it goes.

I want to get a big enough tank to have one of GIANT stripey loaches. 🤣🤣

  • Interesting, I've always heard that the "chocolate" Kuhlis are more bold and active than the stripped ones

That's what I was told too! That's why I got the black ones. But the stripped are so cute. My LFS had two left so I got them to add to my 5ishblack ones. There were 7. But I dont see them enough to know if they are all there still. 😭😅 the two stripped ones? I see ALLLLLLLLLLL day. To the point im going to get more. They ate so freaking ccchhhhuuutttttttttttyeeeeeeeeee

Huh! I've always loved the look of the striped ones so that's nice to hear!

  • my black ones are out all the time, striped I never see. maybe I will see more of the striped when I get more of them? but they seem much shyer to me.

What is your stocking? Im just curious to see the environment. Id love for mine to come out more. My tank is very heavily planted. To the point im think of taking up my Christmas moss carpet and putting it on the tank wall.

Not sure if this is one of the subs that lets me attach pictures in comments or not?

40gal breeder, 3-4 black loaches, 1-2 striped loaches (I think?) 1 clown pleco, like 8 glowlight danios, 8 various corycats, dont know how many guppies, dont know how many amano shrimp, dont know how many ramshorn snails. big hunk of moss, bare bottom, lots of pieces of wood to hide in. Lots of plants grown emersed out the side to try to soak up the sun from the window its right next to, which mostly keeps algae under control. golden pothos, purple passion plant, and inch plant/tradescantia. I think the amanos have eaten a fair amount of the emersed roots lately tho?? which, to be fair to them, the tradescantia loves dying and eating itself.

This is not my ideal stocking, but Ive had to move a few other tanks into this one as I slowly try to deal with new zealand mudsnails in other tanks, and I originally had 6 black kuhli loaches in here with just the clown pleco for a couple years and they were super bold, but then I added 2 more loaches, trying to increase their school, and Idk what happened, but now I'm down to 3 or 4. The striped ones, I came home with like. 10. and I think I lost like 8 in quarantine, and only got to move 2 of them over, and I almsot never see them, and not more than 1 at a time. I generally am constantly assuming the striped ones got eaten and that I'll never see them again, and then every so often I get One(1) stripey surprise. Last I saw a stripey was like, Nov 30th. But hes also soooooo tiny and theres so many places they could be hiding.

When I get the income for it again, I would like to maybe upgrade the tank size, and increase the schools for everyone again. Also, Id like to put sand in, once Im reasonably confident Ive dealt with the mudsnails in other tanks and avoided spreading them to this tank.

I am thinking i see my stripey ones more because they like to hide in the moss carpet. Same. I have no idea how many loaches have survived cause I dont see them and if a fish dies the shrimp and snails clear them out before I find them usually. In rhe past few days I've seen 5 of the black and one striped one during feeding. I haven't seen my smallest stripey loach in a few weeks so idk where he is. 🤣 but i am thinking of moving my Christmas moss carpet to a wall carpet instead to give my cory more room to forage in the sand.

  • I’ve found the exact opposite. In both of my tanks my Black Kuhlis are super outgoing while my other 3/4 species are more shy.

  • I have also found the opposite. My black khulis are always doing lazy circles in the corners. My giant khulis like to hang out in leaves; but I hardly ever see any of my banded khulis out in the open- they mostly congregate under the wood hardscape, though there is enough space for me to see them.

So maybe it is my carpet of Christmas moss. They made a little hide under the moss right up against the glass. 🤣 The stripped ones are always playing around in it. I had to add rocks on top of it in random spots cause they keep digging it up.

They must be very happy noodles, then!

I hope so. I love those guys. They are my favorite little guys!

  • It’s the same here too! I see most of my kuhlis when the tank light is out but ambient (kitchen) lights are on. The black tend to be a little shyer than my pangios but all will come out for noms

  • I had 6 black, and added one banded kuhli that I saw all alone at Petco. The striped dude would barely hang out with the black kuhli, but they def owned the tank and were waaaay more active than the striped dude. Then, I upgraded tanks and now have 12 striped and 5 black (lost one 😔). Now it’s the complete opposite. The black kuhli all pile up in their cave all day until the lights go out, but the banded kuhli are always out. I never see less than 4 at a time. And even so, I’m positive I have several species of banded kuhli, because they even sectioned off into small groups, with the occasional full out noodle rave

I have 5 black and 4 banded. I added twi tiny babies yesterday
