I have a 20 gallon long, half sand/ half fluval substrate. So they dig and burry in the sand very often. But I found one of my oldest kuhli loaches having white things on the fins, some days it’s not noticeable and some days like today was super noticeable, he/she is eating and super active, I have a group of 6. Can anyone help me find what this is please?!

  • That is a good clip but is there any way you could get a close up shot of the fins? I agree something looks odd.

My camera was super hard to focus, and you know they swim so fast😂but I can see if I can

Kind of resembles an external parasite but I've never seen this before on my own Pangio. Does it seem to be getting worse, ie more of the white dots? Are the fins somewhat eroded? It does seem that way in the shot but you can see better in real life.

I know it's a pain to get a good close up shot of the fins, as eel loaches startle easily, but if you manage it, please add it to this thread.

I'd have ich-X on standby for this fish. It's a great med, not just for ich but multiple external issues. And a quarantine tank if you can manage to net that loach out. Treating in the display tank isn't ideal, but sometimes it can't be helped.

I have ich x treatment. Just the weird thing is it’s only on his fins in the front. I thought maybe sand stuck to the slime coat? I wouldn’t say his fins are top tier but they don’t seem bad, he also is acting normal which is making things harder for a diagnose. I could try to fish him out with a net and inspect on his body closer. I hope it’s not a parasite or anything like that! I have super fine sand and it gets stuck to my Cory Dora’s sometimes, but normally just shakes off after they move…

And i wouldn’t say it’s getting worse but very inconsistent, some days i see there’s hardly ever and some days like today i see more white spots. I always thought it was sand but it made me worry today seeing more spots—that it might be something else

  • Do you have sand in the tank? Mine when they are eating expel sand through the gills and end on the fins

Yes! I have half fine white sand and half fluval substrate. For a while I thought hmmm maybe it’s sand on the slime coat?

Yeah could be sand otherwise no idea doesn’t look like fin rot or anything

Kinda what I’m thinking, thank you

  • It looks like some kind of fungal infection but I am not sure.

Thank you, it could be a possibility. Although it’s been on and off like this for a while maybe even a couple months? It’s been a slight concern to me for a while but some days it’s not as prominent or I can’t see it, some days I can…

Thats odd. I am sorry I cant help much but if I were you I would isolate the kuhli ASAP in case it is conagious and spreads to the others. I would treat with something for antifungal infections or itch but I would investigate more

  • Ick?

Kinda worried about that it might be but it’s only on his fins, I thought ich shows up everywhere on their body

  • Since a possible theory is sand, quarantine in a tank without it and see if it persists? If it doesn’t, you’re most likely safe.

Okay today he doesn’t have any dots!! I think it’s just sand thank you
