Very engrossing, and sheds a lot of light on why Earl was the way he was, and why he was so good at it. The most surprising thing was that he very nearly called up to the majors for the Cardinals as an infielder before a series of unlucky circumstances banished him to minor league hell.
Fantastic book!
It’s so good!
Great read! Quickly became an Orioles fan essential for me.
I think that bit about him coming so close surprised a lot of people because it seemed like the common conception was he just wasn’t that good. I also found the bits on Earl’s home life fascinating including having an uncle who was a con iirc. Great read.
Yeah, he was never destined to be a star player in the majors, but he was certainly capable of playing in the Show in his prime, if even just for a cup of coffee. Far better than 99% of all pros, anyway.
Yeah. Stanky really did him wrong. Glad you’re enjoying the book. Definitely one of the better baseball bios I’ve read recently. There’s a good one on Brooks I got a few years back that I enjoyed too.
Just snagged from the library
Is the author John Miller the play by play guy ? He’s number one in my book.
