• The tariffs had f*ck all to do with the worsening of Canada-US relations. It was the disrespect, 51st State, and out of control CBP animosity. The Canadian government had very little to do with the boycotts of US products and travel, with the major exception of Liquor Control boards pulling US booze of the selves (which was glorious). It’s a grassroots movement and it’s generational in scope, things aren’t going back to the way they were before Trump because things were already trending against US concerns as their private equity firms continued their raiding of Canadian companies, Trump just escalated things with his narcissistic statements.

  • Let me try to represent it in numerical terms, using a format similar to how Paradox strategy games represent relationships.

Our current opinion of the US is: Terrible (-647)

Change this year: -650 (was +3)

Causes: Envoy harming relations (-30) Broke trade deal (-50) Authoritarian despots (-20) Threat (-200) Insulted x8 (-400)

  • Weird. It's like smearing the room in shit and setting it on fire didn't foster good relations. Who could've seen this coming?
