Tbh I believe that Trump’s interest in Greenland is probably the biggest threat that Trump poses to Canada, simply because we would be mostly surrounded by the US if Trump actually had his way.
Controlling both Greenland and Alaska would give the US complete control over both sides of the Northwest Passage. Since the US has always refused to recognize our sovereignty over the Passage and, by extension, the Arctic, I would argue that this is not an empty threat and more likely a long held goal of the US.
As the Arctic thaws, the Passage is being primed to become a significant shipping route and the Arctic a significant supply of natural resources. As a result, I suspect what's happening here is that Trump has a big mouth and too little restraint to keep the curtain pulled like previous presidents until the Passage and hitherto unexploitable resources in the Arctic become more easily accessible due to thawing. Greenland would be a good start to taking control of the Western hemisphere's Arctic and shipping, providing a choke point and furthering US territorial claims in the Arctic.
I believe that these threats against Greenland, realistic or not, ultimately represent the single largest threat against Canadian territorial sovereignty since 1812. While I'm not afraid of Trump, I think the threats need to be taken seriously.
Agree, and also that Greenland provides us with Denmark as a large neighbour. Greenland is protected by NATO and is under the sovereignty of an EU member state, so at least they could be our ally in the event of an invasion. Without Greenland, our only non-US neighbour is St-Pierre and Miquelon, which has much less strategic or economic value.
Plus, if Canada allowed the US to take Greenland by force (“allowed” could mean simply being neutral in this case), then would other NATO members be willing to stand up for Canada? (Edit: Don’t forget that if the US actually invaded Greenland, they would almost certainly try to move forces/supplies through Canadian skies and waters, so we could be seen as complicit if we didn’t use force against the US)
Not saying it would be good or we would want it, but the us does not have a good record dealing with insurgent conflicts, and the ineptitude they have bred by firing non-sycophants would mean absolutely disastrous results if they invaded either country.
Canada doesn’t have the strategic depth to maintain an insurgency. The Viet Cong had North Vietnam, the Taliban had Pakistan. Canada needs a robust nuclear deterrent.
The US is full of cowards who don't want to stand up against him and would rather go with the flow to invade an ally for no reason than have to do something themselves to remove him from power.
And Canada is full of what? Brave Boomers willing to drop their lives of comfort in their million dollar homes and fight the U.S. military force looking to annex Arctic territory?
Some guy gets stabbed on the TTC and two train loads or Torontonians run the opposite direction. Can't wait to see all these Reddit keyboard warriors in action ready to confront the largest military in the world in the case of an invasion. Canadians calling out Americans as cowards are the biggest crock of shit. Canadians and Americans are 90% alike, and in the case of complacency and passiveness, Canadians are going to be leading that category.
You think Canadians would be leading in complacency and passiveness when we are the ones being invaded?
Remember that Canada is more free, safe, healthy, happy and educated than the US (reported only by every statistic and world index in existence). We have something real to lose by being invaded while US people have nothing to gain
I did not say a single thing about canadians. Your whataboutism does nothing to prove my comments false. I also wasnt calling for war, I'm merely stating who I will blame if it comes to pass.
Also when faced with voting for trump-lite, Canadians at least proved able to not vote for that. So we are at least less complacent (so far, anyway).
Yeah I always get uncomfortable reading the hoorah "my country is more badass" posturing. War is fucking hell and literally nobody who is actually on the ground wants to be there besides a few psychopaths
It's not one blowhard loser. It is an entire apparatus of Nazis in the regime that are behind him, and a big question about if the US military will actually go in on such expansionist imperialism against other western powers (it very obviously will against less developed nations).
This dickhead also doesn't say stuff like this out of nowhere; he says shit others have said to him and put in his ear. If he's talking about this stuff, it's because some shitheel Republican, oligarch, or another dictator like Putin put it in his ear.
Tech broligarchs want access to resources. Anyone else remember Musk's "well coup whoever we want" tweet? I sure do. And he ain't the only fuckwad billionaire with that mindset.
American imperialism is not the hollow threats of a single blowhard. It is the manifestation of capitalism's brutality.
Accurate. His speeches are Frankenstein collections of phrases he’s heard recently. The only original parts are the mean nicknames he gives people he doesn’t like.
Everyone should study Trump's new National Security Strategy (NSS). The US is now the greatest threat to any country in the Western Hemisphere since they consider they have the right to take over any country they want. This includes Greenland, Canada, Venezuela etc. Greenland and Canada's Arctic are particularly vulnerable since together they have a total population less than a small city and are some of the most valuable land on earth. If you are skeptical of the official US threat ask yourself why earlier this year Trump ordered 35 new icebreakers for the US military.
we should talk about ways to protect ourselves from them. stop giving their cia tapped corporatons all sorts of information about ourselves wouldn't hurt.
Well he's going to be making some very crazy and utterly insane moves and the next little while because he's trying to divert attention away from the Epstein files, which is looking worse and worse everyday for him. So making War and a seizing countries like Iceland and Venezuela or just the perfect distractions!
Well he's going after Venezuela for oil and the last place he announced they bombed claiming Isis was there. But they also have oil.
Why? Because Trumps master Putin is hurting fir oil because he didn't count on Ukraine going this long. So like a good bitch Trump is getting his master more oil like a dog fetches the morning paper.
Correction: The appearance of optics matters to Trump. He can, will, and HAS lied until he's blue in the face to maintain the appearance of optics, knowing that anyone with a brain can flat out call him out on his lie and he'll just say "that was AI, not me" and deny that too. He knows it will pacify his base who will take him at his word, and he's steadily been growing his power and influence such that anyone who disagrees with him is automatically an "enemy" no matter how right they actually are.
It's honestly really Orwellian how he's behaving (and leading his base to behave) and it's terrifying just how many people are willing to buy into it. As long as he keeps boasting about his strength and power, reality doesn't matter anymore. The rich play into it, knowing it makes them richer. And the poor are strung along because what other choice do they have?
Don’t downvote this. It’s a reasonable position to take. One would think that an American president would need popular support to invade a neighbouring ally. It does t seem like Trump needs support to do anything he wants. But that’s weird.
Landry said Tuesday the U.S. is not “trying to conquer anybody” or to “to take over anybody’s country.”
Exactly. Libs are always overreacting to things. The US isn't trying to take over Greenland. It's just trying to make Greenland part of the US. You know. Difference!
As a proud conservative I don't really know anything about international relations, but I'm sure this kind of thing happens all the time-ish.
This is the same operation taking place in Canada today. Dark money funding separation movements and influencing public perception. Classic CIA playbook. The difference is we were allies until 2025 and respected each other's sovereignty. I am a proud conservative myself, but I understand that we will be conquered from within before we are conquered externally.
No similarities whatsoever. The failed failing foreign policy of the 1930s did not stop Hitler. We would have stopped Hitler. We have invented this brand new hot-shit policy where we just give the dictator everything he wants and hope he eats us last. That's obviously completely different for reasons. We have learned the lessons of history!
I thought the last sentence sufficed as an /s before, but in case it doesn't, /s.
Tbh I believe that Trump’s interest in Greenland is probably the biggest threat that Trump poses to Canada, simply because we would be mostly surrounded by the US if Trump actually had his way.
Trump wants Greenland so that Canada will be surrounded on all sides. Then he'll annex us too.
He doesn’t have to annex us.
He just needs a CPC majority and they’ll just give him everything he wants.
Yeah p much. Canada is screwed either way. The USA is the great evil of the world and we will never know peace until the people revolt fr.
Many think its Putins plan to take Greenland not Trumps and Putin does not want Canada.
Alaska has taken care of that.
Also, Trump is a blow hard coward and his hollow threats don’t scare Canadians.
Controlling both Greenland and Alaska would give the US complete control over both sides of the Northwest Passage. All threats are hollow until you have a gun pointed at you
Empty words or not, we need to take what Trump says seriously and him making moves on Greenland will only end in disaster for us
So nobody EVER saw this Coming???p

We could be looking at something more like the Troubles or the Basque conflict.
Although Canada would also be facing a much bigger shortage of manpower compared to the gap between Ukraine and Russia.
I think with new Lazer weapons, nuclear weapons will be futile. The uk, and South Korea have been demonstrating there effectiveness.
The US is full of cowards who don't want to stand up against him and would rather go with the flow to invade an ally for no reason than have to do something themselves to remove him from power.

War is shit, I dont disagree.
We didnt vote for Trump, we cant act as a check on his power or aggression (without declaring war at least). But do you know who can?
Bonus question: do you know who isnt?
Good to see that I'm not the only one lurking this sub to have a normal opinion.

TIL the US president doesn’t have an original thought.
Accurate. His speeches are Frankenstein collections of phrases he’s heard recently. The only original parts are the mean nicknames he gives people he doesn’t like.

He is threatening Canadian sovereignty.

Your data as a likely resident of a city within a hundred miles of the U.S. border is of absolutely no use in any quest to annex northern territory.
It's like when people were lining up to buy toilet paper during COVID. No idea what works or what helps, just wants to do something.
they can use it to fine-tune their online propaganda, demoralisation effort, fake news and such.
I can't believe there's now a time when i'm considering joining my country's military.
I am never forgiving americans for this.

i don't even know what that means lol

It’s because we’re next.
Were not as Trump does not have the support for it.
That doesn’t seem to matter.

and he has the support to invade greenland ro venezuela?
Fascism doesnt need support, it needs capitulation and hes got a hell lot of that from his public and military and govt.
