I see this quite often. I think for some reason they reverse signs when businesses close down.

Many places require a sign stay full so it does not look run down.

It’s also a practical way to keep the lights covered until a new lease is signed and that business gets their own sign, while also indicating that the original business is no longer active.

while also indicating that the original business is no longer active.

Surely the big "To Let" signage above it indicates that!

    What is "off license shop"?

    parent
    57 points mij8907

It’s a shop that sells alcohol in the UK

Sometimes called A bottle shop or liquor store in other countries

    parent root
    41 points Consistent-Annual268

Off(-premises) licence: a shop that is licensed to sell alcohol but not licensed for on-premises consumption.

In other words, a liquor store, not a bar/pub/restaurant.

    I was wondering too

off-licence\ noun [ C ]\ /ˈɒfˌlaɪ.səns/\ /ˈɑːfˌlaɪ.səns/\ (US liquor store, package store)\ Add to word list\ a shop that sells mainly alcoholic drinks to be taken away and drunk at home

welp, my mind decided it was cyrillic for a little bit and tried to figure out what it said with my minimal knowledge. turns out that's not Cyrillic. the more you know

    Looks like Russian.

Right. As far as I know, that’s because that tenant has moved out and they can’t take the sign with them because then the interior would be exposed to the weather. So right, they’ll just flip it around until the next tenant installs their sign.

Often the sign belongs to the building owner. And they need a new contract before making a new plexiglass plate with the next shop's logo/name.

Late night shop off license, for upside down piss heads, so they can read it.

and that's why you don't let people with no license install your signs

Off License Late Night Shop. The sign is upside down along the vertical. Since the sign panel is transparent, you get what you see here.
