I’ve got a cabinzero 28L backpack and half of a small hard shell carry on.
I’ll be there for 12 days and 11 nights, and I’ll have access to a washer but no dryer. I’ll need to air dry everything.
It’s going to be cold, and I chill easily so layers are super important for me. Usually I’m pretty good about cramming my stuff into one backpack, but thick winter clothes have me stumped. I’m out of space and there are a few non-clothing items I don’t have space to stuff in.
What should I cut from my packing list? The biggest problem items are the hoodies and the zip-up, but they are also the most essential because I can’t leave the house without one. Unfortunately, I sweat a lot even when I’m cold so I’m lucky to get two wears out of one.
Here’s my current packing list: - sweatpants - jeans - leggings - 2x hoodies - 3x thermal tights - 2x sleep pants - 4x shirts - 3x sleep shirts - 4x thermal long sleeve tops
On the plane I’m wearing my coat, a hoodie I wear to sleep, a zip up hoodie, a thermal longsleeve, and another pair of jeans.
As I’m looking at this list I feel like there’s so much I could cut, but I keep coming up with justifications why I need whatever thing. Fresh perspectives welcome lol
Why do you have so many sleep clothes? Surely you can wear the same clothes for sleeping all week?
my meds make me sweat like crazy and night sweats are no exception :( but you make a good point, maybe I can cut one shirt and hand wash the other every couple days instead of waiting for my big laundry load
I'd take two sets of sleep clothes and alternate days; wear one, and the next day you wash it and wear the other to give it time to dry.
If you have something like merino or silk you can jut hang it up to air and it will be fine. 2 sets would do you.
It’s their packing list
Let them live
They asked what they could cut from their list. If you can’t say anything nice perhaps don’t comment
I just have to say, this is the first time I’ve seen someone with LITERALLY half a bag when they say they’re 1.5 bagging! I laughed!
Have you tried layering something thin like a Uniqlo Airism shirt as your very first layer under everything else? YMMV but having that thin layer there can help to wick sweat away from your skin and also can catch some sweat before it makes it to the next layer. If it catches enough then you could possibly get away with cutting down on your shirts and just wear the ones you bring more frequently. Five thermal long sleeves (4 in bag plus 1 wearing) plus 4 shirts plus 3 sleep shirts is a lot of top layers for a 12 day trip so I think you might be able to cut down there if it works well for you—plus the Airism shirts are so thin and lightweight you can pack a few for the equivalent volume of a single (cotton?) shirt.
Also, if you get cold, definitely bring a hat! And wear your heaviest/thickest things on the plane to cut down on bulk in your bag. If I’m traveling with a winter coat I’m just wearing or carrying it. It doesn’t count as a bag and I can still stuff things in its pockets, like my hat or gloves. Try doing a test pack and put some things in your coat pockets if you have to and see how that feels.
my thermal shirts are uniqlo!! I love them and they go under my regular t shirts and hoodies. I need to invest in a new coat though, my current one makes me feel like a linebacker lol, good tip about stuffing things in the pockets!!
My layering system, good to about 20f/-7c:
Cotton sweatpants and hoodies are bulky and heavy. You have a lot of sleep stuff.
Laundromats exist. One load would take care of my needs for two weeks.
you have a washer so reduce all the 3x and 4x items by 1.
the beauty of traveling in the winter is that the air is super dry and the heat is on, so things dry faster. especially with a washing machine and an extra spin cycle
So you’re 2 bagging and having issues with a short trip? Before you try to argue, a 28 L and another carry on is 2 bagging
You might want to bring pants better than jeans and sweats. They don’t dry easily
Also are your sleep shirts doing double duty as regular shirts? If no, you only need 1 pair
If you do get cold, you layer with multiple pieces. For example, hat, scarf, gloves, base, shirt, (if needed) thin sweater, fleece, rain jacket for the top
The bottom would include socks, a base and pants
If you sweat a lot, you can wash the thin pieces that night. Of course, you’ll want to test which ones will be ready after drying overnight. Personally, my cotton hoodies wouldn’t be great for warmth or drying fast, so I wouldn’t take those traveling
well I do have a carry on, but I’m splitting the space with my travel buddy so we each get half. I’m flying cheap so we had to pay extra for one and it’s like 60 bucks per!! We can call it two bags since I will be lugging around two bags lol.
It’s embarrassing to admit but I don’t actually have any pants besides jeans, sweats, and a couple work slacks. Maybe laying my wet stuff on the radiator will have to do? I am bringing a scarf and gloves but they go on my person during the flight and I forgot to mention them. I’m hatless, I’ll try to pick one up while I’m there… Any recommendations for thin layering sweaters? My wardrobe is mostly comprised of thermals, cotton shirts, and cotton blend hoodies. I used to have some nice merino knits but a bad batch of laundry shrunk them to baby size and I can’t remember where I got them
Out of curiousity, are the work slacks made out of a poly/nylon material? When I worked in person, my travel pants also doubled as part of my work wardrobe, along with my blouses. It might be worth testing to see how they air dry overnight
For a thin layering piece, maybe a thin fleece. I found a basic one that had pills at the 2nd hand store. Also, I got a basic synthetic buttoned cardigan from costco
If you do a thin fleece, then you could use a coat with fill like poly or down. Personally, I use poly fill, but I know it works for me. If I had less walking and more standing around, I’d use my battery heated jacket instead.
I just saw you sweat a lot, so your thermal shirt could double as a sleep shirt. Because they’re thin and relatively small, bringing extras of those wouldn’t be as big of a deal. Obviously, they dry fast
Personally, I avoid merino, but that’s because I don’t want to baby my clothes. So I stick with synthetics, but I’m sure people have recs for merino if you want them
Try eBay for replacing merino wool items. I’ve gotten some great deals!
First off, you have two bags.
Second, as a 1.5 bagger my sling goes inside my packable backpack which goes inside my carryon: turducken style. Since you’ve got the CZ Military 28, then only a sling would go inside of it to be a 1.5 bagger.
Third, the CZ Military 36 also works as a personal-sized bag as long as you under pack it. I have both and use them (well, primarily the 36 since I got it) on Frontier for my free personal bag without any issues.
Fourth, yeah winter clothes take up much more space. You would be best with a larger carryon (unless you’re trying to stay within personal-sized bag…back to the CZ M36) like a Osprey 26+6 or TomToc T67 (and then a packable backpack and/or sling within).
Fifth, since getting a bag that meets your needs isn’t possible at this late date, onward to answering your question. It’s hard to say. Offhand, bare minimum is 2-3 sets of everything, but you’ll be doing laundry almost every morning and/or every eve, and hope things dry in that time in between (best to wash in the morn for the most air-drying time). IDK about the jeans and sweatpants and leggings. I’d say two pairs of jeans and be done, assuming you can wear them more than one consecutive day. Air-drying they might need more than 24H to completely dry. Same with the hoodie.
If you don’t have packing cubes, you desperately need them (again, for next time at this point). I bought Gonex as my starter set and later on bought a 2nd set (different size combo). They continue to meet my needs.
Ummmm…socks, underwear and toiletries/doop kit are missing from your list. Either way, same head count for those: 3
No tablet (movies on the plane), power banks (yes, plural), wall charger/power plug, cables, etc. on your list either.
