When asking for input, it helps to include:

  • Where you're going & how you travel: hostels, hotels, urban, remote?
  • How you pack: super minimal? tech-heavy? need room for camera gear?
  • Your short list: bags you're already considering
  • Your body size/build: some bags fit certain frames better
  • Budget range: under $150, up to $300, flexible?

A Few Reminders

  • Use the search bar
  • Check the sidebar and wiki for resources and guides
  • Keep it travel-focused. Non-travel or everyday carry talk belongs in other subs
  • Edit: I’m also going to South America for 2-3 months latee in the year so I’m considering that as well.

Hi M19 travelling for month with 2 friends in Thailand and Vietnam and I was looking for recommendations on what backpacks I should take.

I currently have an Osprey 48L Kestrel from years ago that im hoping passes as a carry on. In addition I’m deciding between getting an extra daypack (maybe 20-25L) that I could wear on my front, or buying a new bigger backpack (e.g. 65L) that I’d have to check in as well as carrying a small sling bag.

Any advice would be appreciated 🙏

    Any advice would be appreciated

Prepare a good packing list, and use that as the basis of a suitably sized bag, which would probably be in the 30L - 35L range. Both 48L + 20L and 65L are excessive.

By all means take a secondary, packable daypack (say 15 - 20L) which will fit inside your primary bag.

I’m planning on going to South America for 2-3 months later on so I’m wondering if this is worth considering

  • Anyone tried both the ULA Camino and the Osprey Farpoint Travel 40?

I love my ULA Circuit, and am looking for a durable pack for traveling and some short backpacking. So panel zipper, laptop sleeve, and carry on size required.

I'm partial to the ULA, but the Farpoint is on a great sale, so considering that option as well.

  • Hi! I'm looking to upgrade from the roomy but flimsy backpack my firm gave me a while ago.

I carry around a 14" Lenovo backpack, a Logitech MX Master full Keyboard (and Mouse) with their respective cases, charging brick, a 737 Anker backup power bank, and a few accessories here and there like headphones, insulated water bottle, etc. Black/matte would be great since it goes well with everything. I'm not big on flashing brand logos around.

I began doing some research and liked the idea of the Tomtoc T73 backpack but I gawked at the $200 price tag (if I'm wrong and it's fairly priced, feel free to slap me). Then I looked into stuff like the Uniqlo functional backpack, Travelpro backpacks and small carryons, a Lenovo backpack from FB marketplace, avio backpacks with the vacuum sealer, $20 Amazon finds, then looked into backpack inserts, and then I just... got overwhelmed.

Anyone wanna chime in and suggest something nice?

The context which you have provided indicates that your primary or possibly only use case is EDC rather than minimalist onebag travel.

In which case https://www.reddit.com/r/EDC/ might be more helpful.

  • looking for a small Gym bag that clips/attaches to lash points of errant pro and is compressable

I have a boundary supply errant pro https://www.boundarysupply.com/products/errant-pro-x-pac?variant=40787026706490 and I was looking for something that attaches to the front of the backpack and could be used like kind of like the duffel pack part of the ablecarry edc/eaglecreek tour travel pack. i would want it to be usable for wet/dirty shoes or clothing/swim trunks. I would want it to be foldable or compressible so that when i am not using it, i can put it in the backpack or compress it so it isn't sticking out too far from the backpack and is somewhat flush

Id also want it to be water resistant and scent resistant. Some ventilation could also be good so it doesn't get too gross on the inside. I take public transit often so i would prefer to just have both bags attached using g hooks or a small buckle. A shoe compartment would be good as well

  • Eagle Creek Expanse Convertible Carry On or Topo Global Travel Roller owners?

I'm moving toward a minimal two-bag setup for 2 weeks in Italy this spring. I already have the a small backpack as my personal item and am looking for a more rugged/versatile carry-on than a spinner that I can wheel 90% of the time and carry somewhat comfortably when wheels are annoying. I'll be staying at hotels for this trip in Italy, but I love to travel to South and Central America (and hopefully eastern Asia soon!) and hostel hop when I can.

I'm stuck deciding between the Eagle Creek Expanse International Convertible Carry-On and the Topo Designs Global Travel Roller. If you have any experience with these bags (or any similar ones I should look at) I'd greatly appreciate any pros/cons! I've seen other threads about them and theres a good bit of info on the topo but very little on the eagle creek expanse.

Topo Roller owners: I know it will bulges when the front pocket is packed; have you ever had issues carrying it on, and if yes, which airline(s)? The handles seem sturdy but how does it carry?

Eagle Creek Expanse owners: how does it hold up in real travel, and are there any pros or cons that are not obvious from the specs?

    currently

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm leaning Eagle Creek because of the near perfect intl carry on dimensions, weight, and backpack convertibility. It seems better suited for international travel and handling rough areas. The problem is there are very few real reviews of it and I am still tempted by the Topo for more storage, compartmentalization, and style.

My main concern with the Topo is its 9 inch depth and possible front bulging affecting carry on compliance. The backpack straps are nice to have, but with no real place to store them and the wheels out wearing design it's a total L compared to Eagle Creek's stowaway system.

Honorable mention to my inability to decide: The new Patagonia Black Hole MLC 34L wheely. Too new for in depth reviews and the carry on dimensions seem good with a wheels in backpack design. The 34L capacity is lackluster to 38+~3 and 44. I would've bought it in a heartbeat if it had slightly more capacity and a traditional duffle double handle over top on top like the standard black hole line. If anyone has experience with this bag, knows how I could add some solid duffel straps, or can prove it is actually more capacity than advertised please let me know.

I feel like I've rabbit holed so far into this research my choice really won't matter but it's fun to geek out on it. Thanks if you made it this far I hope you have a great day!

The EC option (35L min, 41L max, 38L avg?) weighs 2.4kg, which is fairly chunky even before the addition of any contents.

The weight of the Topo option (44L) is not displayed on the Topo site, or is hidden away somewhere obscure. It certainly looks heavy.

The Patagonia option (34L) weighs 2.9kg.

Of the three options, EC seems the best, or perhaps least bad.

As a general comment, overall this forum is not very keen on rollers, due to their general size and weight characteristics, and even less keen on hybrid rollers. Rollers attract fewer reviews because they are mostly seen as utilitarian products, with limited if any enthusiast following.

I have a roller (Eastpak 42L, bought about 10 years ago) myself, but it was used primarily in connection with business travel and only very rarely for personal travel (eg for weddings, where extra capacity was essential). Now in the attic, occasionally borrowed by family etc.

  • I love the notabag origninal because it can easily convert between a tote bag and backpack. Are there any other simimila bags, but with a zip? I have seen other options like the Patagonia Tote Pack and similar, but they are not as small/minimal as notabag. Does anyone know any other options? I'm looking for a day bag that I can pack in my main bag. I like notabag because it's small, easily foldable, does not get dirty, and has held up very well (around 4 years). My only issue is that it is always open. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation! This looks great, the straps can be hidden. Thanks for sharing!

I have this Patagonia and love it. It fits a ton and has just enough versatility to do most everything.

It does feel a little awkward on your back if you have a lot of stuff in it since it is small-ish and has no structure (not the best hiking bag but it works). It is perfect for a traveling day bag and I usually just lay it flat on top of my suitcase instead of packing it back up, it is less bulky (and less wrinked) that way. It does catch some sand at the beach (used it in costa rica) but it brushes off fairly easily.
