I get what you mean, the width is all over the place if you actually look at it. But my brain is focusing more on the contrast of messy edge turning into a sharp line while the trimmer moves. It is like watching someone clean a dirty window and only later noticing the streaks.
I go back to my Midwest hometown and all the yards, modest homes, have such boundaries in the grass, everywhere. Against sidewalks, roads. Some 1”, many 6”. Some are even like little trenches, unintentionally dug into the dirt because they did it with a weedeater. Are folks asking for this? Did I miss an issue of Martha Stewart Living?
frustrated that there is no guard. not because of the safety aspect, couldnt care less about that, but the fact that the guard cuts the string to the correct length.
the length of the string changes how much torque the engine has to use to spin the head, less string means less torque means higher RPM means you burn the motor up.
longer string means more torque means lower RPM means more strain on the motor and you burn it up lol
ive been a small engine mechanic for many years, i see it all the time. the trimmers with guards last longer than the ones without them. theres absolutely no reason to take it off, literally wouldnt be in the way at any point of what this guy did here.
Stihl, husqvarna and red max are good options for gas. There are a number of battery operated trimmers as well but I have no experience with them. You might have luck searching Lawnsite for more info
Look up the history of turfgrass lawns. They were originally a way for the wealthy to show how unproductive their property was. Most people who owned land needed to use it to grow food or keep livestock, but if you were wealthy enough you could just buy those things so instead they had something that required a lot of maintenance, but provided absolutely nothing in return other than being neat and green.
And well that mindset has just carried over to present day. Ask most people why they need to have a perfect lawn and I bet most of the responses you'll get are something like "because that's what youre supposed to do".
I bought a couple of pounds of native wildflower seeds and threw them in my back yard and let nature take its course. The city won’t let me do that in the front yard though.
Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but i can't imagine lots of people will honestly find a yard like this more appealing than a yard like that:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(865x608:867x610):format(webp)/EEBerger_MWL_CMR7020967-_061_recirc-resized-2ea627dc608d43dd8c33af00f58abadc.jpg).
My lawn service does this and I hate it. They don't do it next to the sidewalk, but they make the bare areas around my trees and flower beds a little larger with every visit. I guess they feel like they have to remove some of the grass every time. Weeds grow in the bare areas, or they erode into trenches on the sloped parts of my lawn.
The guys who run those lawn services love this. They know that in about 3-4 wks, you'll have weeds in those slots, and they will be damned hard to get rid of. Congratulations.
The most satisfying part of this is when the trimmer was used to cut the lawn and the rotation moved the clippings into the lawn and not all over the walkway. Always annoys me when someone can’t be arsed to figure out the correct direction to trim. One keeps everything neat and the other direction is used to spread grass and weeds into every nook and cranny on the walkway.
Grass hates you, needs dangerous pesticides and an ungodly amount of water to not be brown. You should leave it to grow in it's natural habitat and plant native plants in your yard instead. They're less maintenance and better for the environment. For the love of God please.
That boundary is wildly inconsistent with the curb
Yeah. The point is to not have the grass on the stone... Not to have a very visible trench of dirt.
Not satisfying at all.
A clean, one foot boundary.
One of those jobs that look awesome and I can't ever be arsed to invest my time in.
That's not sastifying at all! It goes from a few millimeters to at least 5 centimeters on the opposite side!
I get what you mean, the width is all over the place if you actually look at it. But my brain is focusing more on the contrast of messy edge turning into a sharp line while the trimmer moves. It is like watching someone clean a dirty window and only later noticing the streaks.
plus those corners have even more of a buffer, make it uniform!
And I’m dizzy now
Anyone know the provenance of this style?

Nice but the big dead patch kills it.

I have the same exact trimmer, always end up fucking it up
My trimmer would take an hour and multiple re-wraps to do that.
A decent string trimmer is a game changer
What’s a brand that’s good?
Stihl, husqvarna and red max are good options for gas. There are a number of battery operated trimmers as well but I have no experience with them. You might have luck searching Lawnsite for more info
I know, I should video my efforts! — you all will get a good laugh!
I wish I could edge like this, but it always hurts my back after a few mins.
Hell of a skill. It’s very awkward to do and takes a lot of practice to get this accurate at trimming.
Why do we grow grass.. only to cut it down in its prime.

I concur. r/NoLawns

That's insane lmao
How could a city tell you what you can grow in your own yard?
Would that be actually enforcable?
Does anyone ever think about what happens to all plastic from the reel of line they work their way through when using these types of machines.
Cus it looks good cut lol

I do, the other one looks like bug city lol
Not killing every living thing apart from an ecologically dead monoculture is part of the reason it's awesome though lol
My allergies…
Allergies suck. But no one would force you to plant things you're allergic to though.
That second one looks absolutely awful to my eyes. Just a fucking messy orgy of colour.
There is a happy medium - especially when you’re stacking the deck by comparing a very average practical back yard to a quaint cottage street front
What a waste of time.
Does he do beards?
I want one of these trimmers
I see this more as incredibly tedious and unnecessary than I do satisfying.
I'm not gay, but if that dude asked me to marry him i would say yes.
We all love edging.
r/EdgingPorn
Understandable
As a former neighborhood lawn mower that dude fucked that lawn up. That gap is fucking abhorrent
And this is one of the reasons I love working in the yard.
This is extremely satisfying.
small pebbles have entered the chat
Did they edit out all the dirt flying in every direction? I kinda hate this look, weirdly. Its too artificial.

yer a wizard, harry
That's just creating space for weeds to grow
What is this? A lawn for ants?
Every Saturday at 7am
That will last for like 7 hours
God damn that really buttered my egg roll.
Weeds are going to grow between the gaps
The guys who run those lawn services love this. They know that in about 3-4 wks, you'll have weeds in those slots, and they will be damned hard to get rid of. Congratulations.
People don’t realize how hard this is, just chopping grass, no dirt just grass. Smooth operator
What trimmer is that?
I think I see where the cat is buried
Wide gaps. OCD triggered.
You are a surgeon, sir. Respect.

This is a wildly region-specific statement. My lawn grows just fine with absolutely zero maintenance from me except for mowing it when it gets long.
If where you live is grass' natural habitat you're good. I did say that in my comment.
The therapy I didn’t know I needed.
Use a pressure washer on the walkway.
If I wanted carpet I would go inside
Mmmm... Weed whacking porn
Now that's edging
That is some serious skill. Well done!
Wow
Done that before, eh?
Lord have mercy
I know this is edging, but I came.
I’m dizzy now.
I wish he would work as a Hairdresser, too. Wow!!
Satisfying asf
My OCD would like a word, but those edges are so nice…even if the grass is being a dick on that one side.
AKA what my father in law thinks I should be doing whenever I have free time
Lol lawn nazis don't like my casual attitude.
Clean cut
Yay, microplastic straight into the soil!
A cut like this instantly makes the garden look top-notch.
That line is so crisp it could cut glass 😄
That was so disgustingly satisfying, and I am horrified at the joy I received watching those curves get rounded…
