Garlic being peeled flawlessly with tweezers
  • 1682 points JohannesMP

The tools are neat, but the real key here for that easy peel is soaking them in water. They also look quite fresh which would help a lot as well; The longer the skin has to harden the harder they are to peel.

This is why I love Reddit. Thanks for the tip, bro

Two bowls, garlic in the middle, shake that like you choke that chicken in the morning, harder faster stronger. The peels will all be off and you’ll nice naked garlic. Take a smoke break after.

    parent root
    20 points JohannesMP

Yep! The key with this approach is that the bowls cannot be elastic - the impact needs to be strong. Metal bowls with lips to grab securely are best. Glass would be best but good luck not dropping those.

It also works better with large cloves. If you have a bulb with lots of small cloves then often they will still need manual peeling.

    parent root
    4 points Economy-Owl-5720

Jerk harder with the smaller ones they will eventually give way to peel.

I prefer metal too! Lighter and has the lip and can use smaller bowls.

    parent root
    2 points davewave3283

You do that in the morning? Who has time?

    parent root
    1 points TrueMagenta

I use this trick all the time, pretty sure it's the closest I'll ever get to white magic.

    parent root
    32 points fooooter

    Hot water or just water?

    parent root
    48 points stereoworld

    Warm water apparently.

    parent root
    16 points QuakerGeorge

Just cold water. Same with potatoes.

once you've got the feeling of it it's very similar to peeling an apple with a carrot

    parent root
    2 points Economy-Owl-5720

They chill the cloves out so the skins loosen up.

    parent root
    1 points midnighttramcat

they don’t do anything to each other it’s just someone saying that cold water loosens skins on a bunch of veggies, potatoes included, so the comparison slid in even if it sounded like a crossover tip

    parent root
    4 points EngiNerdBrian

    Whoosh

    parent root
    2 points JohannesMP

Both work, warm water will work faster.

    parent root
    6 points Gummypeepo

Note to self. Soak my damned garlic to peel it better

    Bless you for this

    parent root
    3 points JohannesMP

It also largely mitigates how much onions make you cry when cut, so is a great general life hack if you have the time to let them soak. Warm and cold water both work, but warm works faster.

If you have less time or want to have a quick workout give the bowl shacking approach a try that was mentioned here: https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/1pixyxm/comment/ntatj2t It works shockingly well and is a great way to get out pent up garlic-focused frustration!

    parent root
    7 points Few-Solution-4784

the better solution is genetics, buy garlic that separates easily from the shell.

    parent root
    1 points JohannesMP

That and use/peel them when fresh. The longer the shell has to dry the harder it will be.

Both require you to have access to said good/fresh produce.

    parent root
    4 points ZERV4N

Pretty frustrating that Gilroy, CA is the garlic capital of the world, and the US still gets its garlic from Mexico, old and very not fresh.

Ive been smashing them with a knife ever since I saw it on food network 20+ years ago 😭

    parent root
    1 points miraculum_one

Also the x-large garlic is easier to peel (but has less flavor)

    parent root
    1 points KatieCashew

Also the fact that there was only 4 cloves in that entire head.

    parent root
    -12 points RotyogoBurgonya

The hack I do is cut off the ends and put them in a shaker or a hard plastic cup and shake them. Flawlessly peels them somehow.

You could say I like to undress them like my women: by beating them up /s

    parent root
    8 points BigbooTho

Is beating women funny to you? Is not beating women funny to you? What's the joke here mate?

    parent root
    1 points JohannesMP

+1 for the shaking in a bowl or cup.

-2 for the misogyny, even with /s

That pod of garlic was a paid actor.

The garlic on my streets isn't parting with the skin so easily.

    parent
    39 points Idontknowwhoiam_1

Everytime I see a new way for peeling garlic I become excited then I try it and then fail. I’ve tried soaking, I’ve tried crushing, I’ve tried heating, I’ve tried clipping its head, I’m just done at this point

    parent root
    22 points oneinmanybillion

Same. There is no easy way.

I've found that very large garlic cloves feel easier to peel, because you need fewer in one go lol!

But seriously, I think sometimes they come very dry from the store itself and pretty much let go of the skin as soon as you cut the heads off. Those are the good ones.

    parent root
    2 points Eyfura

Have you tried putting the separated cloves in a Tupperware and shaking vigorously for several minutes? It's the only way.

    parent root
    1 points g0ing_postal

This is how I do large amounts of garlic. For small amounts I felt like the effort wasn't worth it

    parent root
    1 points VorpalHerring

I just buy Solo Garlic now, so instead of fussing over multiple small cloves I only have to peel one big clove

    parent root
    12 points kepler44

That and it's apparently 4 large relatively even cloves- where's the 19 different cloves of various shapes and sizes?

    parent root
    3 points JohannesMP

Give 'em a nice soak like they did here and they might be more willing.

    parent root
    1 points bopp0

Hardneck vs softneck should be part of this conversation,

    parent root
  • 118 points Sentwin

So that is why my toes smell funny when i cut my nails....

    parent
    23 points ivyharbor_lane

pretty sure if your toes smell like this garlic setup you’ve unlocked a medical debuff not a kitchen secret, might wanna check that before the tweezers do

    parent root
    2 points -_Duke_-

Fun fact. If you rub garlic on your feet, you will eventually taste it in your mouth

    parent root
    3 points Commercial_Wind8212

    You smell your toes? Neato

  • 171 points Real_Avdima

What a perfect piece of garlic. Never seen one myself, they always are smaller and layered with very uneven pieces.

    parent
    21 points Zardac134

This was the satisfying part for me. Such even and large cloves.

    parent root
    27 points Embarrassed-Town-293

I’m have seen it in the grocery store. Was going to pick it up until I saw the price. It’s called elephant garlic

    parent root
    30 points gargle_ground_glass

I suspect it's hardneck garlic as opposed to elephant garlic. I grow hardneck varieties and they often get this big. Elephant garlic is actually a type of leek and very mild in flavor. One clove of hardneck has more flavor than a whole bulb of elephant.

    parent root
    4 points Embarrassed-Town-293

Interesting, thanks for the info. You saved me considering purchasing elephant garlic, and now I’m just going to plant some hardneck.

    parent root
    1 points throwaway098764567

hopefully you live up north, virginia is about the end of hardneck territory, it doesn't do well further south

    parent root
    1 points frisbeesloth

Whatever type of garlic they call elephant garlic where I live is the blandest waste of money ever!

    parent root

the type of garlic they call elephant garlic is.... elephant garlic.

  • 32 points MONSTERBEARMAN

Four cloves? I haven’t seen garlic with less than 10.

    parent
    6 points Objective_Gap6440

I’ve seen ones with just one clove, more accurately, just one garlic bulb, and they’re way more expensive

    parent root
    4 points Embarrassed-Town-293

    It’s called elephant garlic

    parent root
    2 points MONSTERBEARMAN

Aaah, I forgot about elephant garlic.

You can get some really fat ones from China

I don't know why, but this made me feel sick and uncomfortable. Not satisfying for me at all.

    parent

Same idk why. Maybe it's the gloves or that it feels like it's being filmed in the bathroom

    parent root

    That's not a tweezer, it's a nail clipper!

  • 1 points A_Nonny_Muse

Its easy when you got cloves that F**kin big. Try it with those heads of garlic with like 20 baby cloves.

    parent
  • 1 points WhatsInTheVox

So what I get from this is that grill tongs are also tweezers

    parent
  • 1 points Internal_Ad_6809

If you ain't slamming the side of the knife on top of the garlic smashing it into the cutting board and then peeling it with your fingers to make you have garlic smelling hands no matter how many times you wash them then I don't want to eat it because it wasn't made with hate

    parent
  • 1 points KeyLyon

I refuse to believe that. It just can't be.

    parent
  • 1 points TYFUBYE

    Tweezers or tongs?
