The beloved giant pigeon sculpture overlooking 10th Avenue is set to be removed in Spring 2026, just two years after capturing everyone's hearts. "Dinosaur" by artist Iván Argote has quickly become a symbol of NYC resilience that the community has embraced.
I started a petition asking the High Line and NYC Parks to work with the artist to make this installation permanent. In just months, this pigeon has become deeply meaningful to so many people - removing it would eliminate a piece of art that's already woven into our cultural landscape.
Anyone else feel like we're always losing the things that bring us joy in this city? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing.
It could be cool if it were moved somewhere else but the rotating art on the Plinth is a really great program
LOL what?
Im all for keeping it but lets not overstate that it's just a cool piece of art.
not everything is meant to last. dinosaur was part of a rotational program. i get a lil giggle or vegeta_smirk.gif everytime i see the giant bird too but the buddhist statue thats set to replace him?her? has a nice meaning too.
What would you say to the artist whose work is slated to go up next? What does Argote think about this petition, or have you even asked him?
Dinosaur is part of a program that will bring different artworks to the space over time. If it was being removed to be replaced by nothing, I would be right with you, but it’s not like they’re just arbitrarily taking this art away.
Also, what happens to the pigeon after this? Will it be destroyed, returned to the artist, or something else? There is always the chance it could be reinstalled in another place.
Hopefully pizza rat is next
Next is a giant buddha made of sandstone. https://www.timeout.com/newyork/news/this-giant-buddha-made-of-sandstone-is-coming-to-the-high-line-121625
You thought you were going to produce a revolution with this post lol
Only if they rebuilt him 10x the size.
nah let the spur sculptures continue to revolve.
People confusing memes with art.
Yeah, it’s gonna be a no from me dawg. Not everything should be a cause célèbre, sometimes nice things are just temporary 🤷♂️
"Deeply meaningful"
...like, for sharing in instagram posts?
Look, giant pigeon.. so deep
I would love if they installed it in another place on the high line or in Central Park. Purely because my kid and I love birds and we’re quite fond of it.
I'm curious what happens to a large piece of art like this after its display time is up. It must go back into the artist's possession, right? Could Argote find another place that would want to display it? I know some pieces from Burning Man went on to have permanent display locations in the SF Bay Area.
I actually like the other rotating art more than the pigeon
I swear, I couldn't give a shit. Not against this piece in particular; but I'm so fkng sick of "oh, let's just take some "thing", and make it really really really really big. And we'll call it "Art".
Zzzzzzzz
I feel like had they not named him “Dinosaur” I would be more or less indifferent.
However, given the name, I’m ready to occupy the High Line if they try to remove him. What do we have in this city if not allusions to the Mesozoic?
No thanks!
it has not captured my heart. the opposite in fact.
my friend had the idea of placing all the rotating statues next to eachother in a conga line somewhere
Find a real issue to get behind. This is a foolish one. There is going to be new art there every couple years.
You could say that about anything. I don’t see how your nihilism is productive
You cannot in fact say this about anything. You can only say it about unimportant bs like this.
Look up nihilism in the dictionary and then ponder what “find a more important issue to care about” has anything to do with it. Cause it doesn’t.
Have a merry Christmas, go read a book, and leave me alone.
You need a hug. Jesus Christ your head is in a dark cloud. What do you think culture is?
Ew gross bye
I love the pigeon and I’m totally for this. I live by it and love seeing it
I feel like it was a missed opportunity for the artist, they could have put a pigeon on Buddha's head or on his palm. It would've acknowledge the previous artist and their work without detracting from the meaning of the Buddha statue. It would have been evolving this generation rather revolving.
It's frankly ridiculous to expect every temporary artist at the High Line to fellate a pigeon statue.
