Not weird at all. Abusive types instinctively know that anything that helps us see the world beyond the bird cage they lock us in will have a chance at giving us the strength and desire to break out of the bird cage and gain our freedom.
Straight up actually me with One Piece growing up I was able to stand up for myself because I saw Luffy do it and it normalized fighting back in my brain
That's really cool tbh, and yea, Luffy has probably heavily shaped the type of person I've become, just because he's always on that. "I don't care, I see injustice I stand up to it, automatically, no matter the cost to myself"
Like when he fought crocodile, and crocodile kept saying "you just don't get it you'll die here," and Luffy is just like "If I die that's fine, I'll still defeat you, and Vivi will still put a stop to your scheme" it's inspired other people too apparently considering the happenings in Nepal
Mine would watch movies with abusers in them and spend the whole time either defending the abusers actions (eg Mother Gothel, from Tangled) or insisting they themselves were good people because they were better than the abusers (e.g. Carrie's crazy mom, from Carrie).
It was transparently clear to me that they identified with the bad guys in movies more than the good guys even as a child. Which is fine, sometimes, I love a good villain too. But using fictional villains to justify your real heinous actions is so insane lmao.
my mom had never seen rapunzel, and i was listening to the soundtrack right after it came out. "mother knows best" comes on and about 45 seconds of the song play before my mom whips out her petty voice and says "see? you need to listen to me more, the song is right."
i looked straight at her and in all my neurodivergent literalness, just said "the mom is the villain in the movie" and i was lucky i didn't get my ass beat for pointing it out. i think it just made her have a realization and it pissed her off, plus she couldn't figure out an excuse to get me in trouble for it because she hadn't seen the movie and couldn't argue lol
I watched a cult documentary where the leader assigned some of the members to watch cult documentaries and write an essay proving that he's NOT a cult leader. Predictably it made them realize they were in fact in a cult, and I think at least one left
Duude my mom was so weird about mother gothel too. We saw tangled in theaters and she was so uncomfortable and thought it was an "unfair" presentation of a mother.....
My mom sometimes sings "motheeer... knows BEST" When she's right about something and I know what she means but ma you're quoting a kidnapper and abuser
Yeah I get she's trying to be funny like "haha I was right cause I'm your mom and moms know everything" but quoting a song about a kidnapper gaslighting the kid she kidnapped into believing the world is dangerous and she us too dumb and weak to defend herself is not exactly the way to go about it
It’s so weird to me that they’d have a difficult time believing this… That anyone could miss the point of so many incredible fantasy and sci-fi stories - contextualizing your own reality/perspective through them. I’m unashamed to admit that Naruto of all things helped me with understanding and forgiving myself surviving some fairly profound child abuse. It’s among my brother and I’s favorite anime.
I don't think you even have to go that far. You could have grown up with zero trauma in your life and still relate to the story of Naruto if at any point you ever felt lonely or like you didn't belong to a group.
It's part of why it became such a popular show, the core themes are pretty universal. I'm not even the biggest fan of the show (too much filler and ending was kind of weak plus undoes a lot of the earlier messaging for the sake of cool powerups), but anybody shaming others for relating to that story line must have just grown up extremely sheltered.
This is similar to my experience with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I adore that series and relate so intensely to so many of them in different ways. They pushed forward, stayed good even with many stumbles on that path, and in the end they could still see light and joy through their pains and losses, and if they can do that, then so can I!
They literally do. That's why racists wants books like To Kill A Mockingbird banned from schools- so if something similar happens in their lives they won't be able to compare it to the book and go "oh, wait- is this scenario like that book?" And then they wanted to ban Fahrenheit 451- a book about why you shouldn't ban books.
Yes, anything that suggests authority might be fallible is a danger in their eyes. Can't let the kids start thinking for themselves or they might be able to tell we're full of shit...
remembered how a lot of people put out stories based on their own trauma in the hopes of someone else having the exact experience described here, and got a little giggle out of the mental image of this guy going up to them and saying "nah, that doesn't happen"
Sounds like someone who's never used so much as one solitary brain cell to engage in self reflection.
Personally the "Serfs speech" from Maou Yuusha set me on the path to accepting that my ex parents are irredeemable abusive scum and going NC(plus moving 5000km away from them).
This is literally why properly teaching kids things like the correct name for their body parts and such is important. Because children ARE able to associate things and make connections and recognize stuff, they just lack the tools to do it because they arent taught its bad or what their body is even called.
Recogbizing "oh this is wrong, this shoukdnt be happening" is a thing kids are supposed to do!!! And it HAPPENS!! not as ofteb as one would wish,, but it does!!!
Manga literally helped me heal from some trauma as a kid. It helped me realize why I have some issues I previously thought were unrelated, showed me bluntly that what happened was abuse and no part excuses my abusers. I saw characters who went through situations very similar to the ones that fucked me up get support, advice, and some healthier coping mechanisms I applied in my own life.
People stay underestimating how art can hit you in the gut. They always forget how one scene could stab in and twist into the core of you, scoop out the soft obscene parts of you that see it and scream I know this feeling. I know this. I know how this goes.
I literally sometimes act like the characters I see purely because I end up liking them so much that my personality shifts a little, tf do they mean never happened?
And before anyone says it, I'm guessing this might be linked to my autism since I don't have any personality disorders as far as I'm aware.
Edit: And granted, I was never abused. My brain is just hardcoded like this, I guess.
I realized I was being abused as a child because of songs and movies. Weirdly, my mom was determined to keep my from viewing/listening to media

Nice!!! That first time standing up for yourself really becomes one of those moments that stays with you.
It was Maou Yuusha for me, the Serfs speech part really hit me hard.
That's really cool tbh, and yea, Luffy has probably heavily shaped the type of person I've become, just because he's always on that. "I don't care, I see injustice I stand up to it, automatically, no matter the cost to myself"

Damn! Looked it up and wow 😲
Pretty awesome to see that kind of inspiration.
Yea nah fr, Luffy is such a good inspiration, definitely would watch the show if I were you. It's paced terribly though so watch it on OnePace
Once I'm caught up on my current watchlist I'll give it a go 😊
Oh wow, the spectrum of abuse is so vast.
Mine would watch movies with abusers in them and spend the whole time either defending the abusers actions (eg Mother Gothel, from Tangled) or insisting they themselves were good people because they were better than the abusers (e.g. Carrie's crazy mom, from Carrie).

I gotta know what doc this is
I believe it's Escaping Twin Flames on netflix. There are other documentaries and sources about the cult. Some weird shit for sure
Yes, that's it!
Duude my mom was so weird about mother gothel too. We saw tangled in theaters and she was so uncomfortable and thought it was an "unfair" presentation of a mother.....
Almost left before saying your username is so fucking real lmao
Okay but yours is incredibly funny, I exhaled air out of my nose so hard when I got this notification
Fuck yeah, literally my entire aim with it lmao I’m glad to make people smile
My mom sometimes sings "motheeer... knows BEST" When she's right about something and I know what she means but ma you're quoting a kidnapper and abuser
Who also was lying so doubly not the point she wants to make ;p

It’s sad but real… sometimes media shows you the truth you never had words for. I’m sorry you went through that.
Children are literal infants until they hit 35 years old and then they’re still too stupid to actually know or do things - this guy, apparently
You know they approve the age verification law
This reminded me of my parents a bit, but in their case it was sarcastic...
Any time we asked questions that touched on "adult" topics they would say "I'll tell you when you're 30"
When I turned 30 I jokingly asked "alright, finally 30, what were ask those things you were going to tell me?"
Mom: "if you don't know by now, I can't help you"
They must never have heard of "Literally Me" & all the other related copypasta(s)
Exactly—those memes are practically a rite of passage at this point.
Do you happen to be a robot?
I was abused growing up and fairy tail almost single handedly stopped me from trying to kill myself for like a whole year.
I can't kill myself because Season 4 of Invincible is supposed to come out in March
Any reason is a good enough reason to keep on living!

Naruto has its flaws, but if someone says you should be ashamed of connecting with a Naruto storyline then they never had trauma.
I don't think you even have to go that far. You could have grown up with zero trauma in your life and still relate to the story of Naruto if at any point you ever felt lonely or like you didn't belong to a group.

Can throw 1984 in that list as well, banned in both the US and Russia for the same reasons
I realized i was being abused from Tangled lol

Here ya go 😊
Thank you
Watched the Steven Universe movie and realized I had deep rooted abandonment issues because of Spinel lmao
I watched a horror movie and it made me realize the severity of the event that caused my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (pre diagnosis)

I realized what was occurring to me was SA due to watching iilluminaughtii of all things. This stuff is pretty common honestly
sangwoo killing stalking reminded me of my mom so much for some reason and then she came out as bipolar for about a week and i was like "☝🏾😧.. 🤔"
"Things that never happened" and it's just someone relating to fiction
this is yet another reason why the social media bans are detrimental to children and young people
Well of course they do, if they didn’t , explain the existence of r/readanotherbook

This just speaks to how dull this person is
I learned that other kids were disliked for who they were from Mulan and it helped me to not feel so alone.
