Same, I bought some virtual calling card while in the army in 1996. I would call some 800 number and then they would connect me anywhere in the US for 33¢ a minute. It seemed like such a deal.
I vaguely recall having a pair when I was 5 or 6 years old (mid 1960s). As I recall, they were already kinda "old fashioned" at that point. I think their heyday was in the 1940s and 50s
These are still a thing! They're called penny loafers haha most don't include a coin, but some brands will have a custom coin with their logo on it in place of a penny. You can always put a coin of your choosing in the slot, too
I put dimes in mine so I had pay phone money (calls were 10 cents then)
Same! Never knew when you needed to call home!
Same! The last time I made a call on a payphone with coins it was $0.20.
(I had calling cards after that, in college and until I got a cell phone in 1999).
I didn't remember it ever being less than a quarter
Same. I used calling cards up until 2003 or 2004 when I finally caved and got a cell phone

There was a point in the 80s that I'd see people with $5 and $10 dollar bills in them. Never liked them personally. The show type I mean.
But, why did we do this?
Originally to carry a penny to make an emergency call if needed
Find a penny, pick it up, All day you will have good luck. Put it in your shoe, Good luck will follow you.
I remember Jan saying that line from Grease.
A true fasion statement
I’d put coins from around the world in my shoes……..

In the late 80s and early 90s the black versions became popular. We wore them with white socks, I think it was from the MK influence.
MJ?
Need some eastlands with the pigtail laces
Bring these back!
Taxman coming for those pennies
had to have year you wore born also.
What’s a penny?
If you were a "rebel" you would take the penny out and untuck your shirt. Maybe even put a little dimple in your tie lol
I miss pennies
Yes. Stores are already not giving pennies back in change when there are still billions of pennies in circulation.
I had a pair and wore them until they fell apart. They’re still popular; I see them sold online anywhere from $$ to $$$$. Now I want a pair!
