There was

  • I have no idea to this day what this was about but we sold so many copies at the bookstore I worked at

The secret is to imagine your future right before it happens and it will come true

What’s the rest of the book filled with?

The same sentence wrote in different, and more complex, formats 10000 times.

    damn they stole my idea!

Just imagine them realizing it was your idea from the start and backdating you with a check in the mail tomorrow.

    one can only dream

    That's The Secret

You might be wondering about all those people who have suffered and died due to war, illness and other injustices. And yes, yes they did unfortunately manifest all of it.

Is that in the book? I do recall the few people I knew who read it and took it seriously being absolutely insufferable for awhile afterwards. And that sounds like something that would have been in the book.

In my memory it genuinely is part of the book.

If it doesn't come true, imagine harder. If that didn't work, focus even harder. And repeat.

    Doesn’t matter

I imagine this comment will get thousands of upvotes

Michael Jordan said it first, “see the ball going through the hoop”

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball

    “Be the ball, Danny”

"Believe in the ball, and Throw yourself!"

Come on Marty! You still got another concussion!

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. - Wayne Gretzky" - Michael Scott

    Phil Jackson was great

I upvoted it. You manifested this on my feed!

But there’s a little tiny something to being positive and seeing more possibilities to do better in life than when you’re sad and down and don’t care.

But the dude said “think money coming and it’ll come” and it lost me. Bunch of grifters.

Did turn me on to actual motivational speakers like Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins, etc who have shit that actually helps.

The secret is not one of those things and is a stain on the industry.

I really wanted to down vote this. Congratulations you gave me my first urge to frivolously down vote for the first time n (I didn't fyil

Oprah used to push this a lot. There is a really funny SNL skit with Oprah being like I imagined myself in a hot air balloon, called my assistant and the next day I'm in a hot air balloon! The secret works people!

    A little under three dozen

what if you don't have a 3rd eye (aphantasia)? how do you imagine it?

Something along those lines of: 'Positive affirmation will lead to your dreams come true'. It says that there is a hidden force in the universe we don't yet understand. You can influence it by thinking about the same thing again and again and one day it'll happen.

I think Jim Carrey also had this believe.

People can think about that what they want. I was poor my whole life. I spend a lot of time wishing for a brighter future and imagining it really accurate (before I knew any of this 'Secret - Law of attraction' thingy) and it didn't work a single bit.

I think it's nothing more than a self fulfilling prophecy. Tell yourself everyday that you wish to be in better shape or get the job you want. You break the cycle of thinking you'll never reach it, which prevented you from reaching the goal in the first place.

It's like saying:'Believe in yourself' but in a 'religious' kind of way. Telling people there is a higher force that will help you reach your goals if you tell yourself these goals every day.

I think that the whole Secret-image with hidden underground organizations like the free masons knowing about this secret and that this is the reason for their power and so on, is just the fluff to make it believable. Who's gonna prove it wrong, you know.

Turns out the invisible force was called 'not being born poor', thus guiding the book to the space beneath thousands of glass covered coffee tables the Continental United States over

One of life's great mysteries ✨😮 wooooOoooo 👻🌠🌌

I believe you. Please sell me your overpriced online course, consisting of a 5 page PDF, that you created after paying for another overpriced online course about making quick cash.

This sounds familiar to me. Are there space alien spirits attached to our bodies as well? And does it include Lord Xenu.

Yes, "law of attraction" and "positive affirmation" BS, basically, "If you believe in it hard enough, it will happen." I believe making those dream/goal boards was a big part of it as well.

I have a cousin who got really into it when it came out, and I try to be nice and let people have their opinions, but then she started going on about, "And negative things happening are part of The Secret as well. If you have negative thoughts, negative things will happen. Every negative thing that happens in your life is because you didn't believe in something positive instead."

So I asked her, "So, a person who was raped just, what, had it coming to them because they didn't think about or believe in not being raped enough??"

She legit tried to argue that it was for about 3 sentences before my uncle, her dad, said, "Sounds like rape apology to me." And that shut her up quickly.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, but yeah, that whole book was beyond idiotic and did a real number on some people's mental health. I even remember the news running stories about local people making dream boards lol

    Fun fact:
I used to work in a library, and this was categorised as fiction

    That's awesome haha

When I was in school some people really thought they found the hidden knowledge of humanity when discovering this book, it really had an interesting impact

The big secret, supposedly, is that if you imagine what you want, your dreams, it will come true.

Like what prayer supposedly was for people until recently, but repackaged for a new millennium

As an atheist, I’m just curious, what is prayer now?

Talking to an invisible man. Asking for forgiveness when breaking his imaginary rules so he doesn’t punish you, then giving thanks when nothing bad happens to you.

    Same. Its a secret

Spoiler Alert: The secret is positive thinking and maybe if you think about it enough it’ll manifest.

I’m betting it’s someone who needs to make money off of a book about a Secret?

    It was about non-sense.

I, too, worked at a bookstore around the time this books was popular, hahaha.

My buddy's eccentric dad was pretty big into it. FWIU it's just basic motivational advice mixed with mysticism and trendiness.

    New agey manifestation bullishit

Oh my God. I worked at Barnes & Noble at the time and we we must have sold a hundred copies a day. Madness.

I discovered I had a copy a few years ago during a move and still don't know how or when I got it.

It's essentially a pyramid scheme in book form.

  • We had the movie. We also had national treasure, and I thought they’d be similar due to the cover art. I was disappointed.

I imagine The Secret would've been vastly improved by having Nick Cage in there, Caging things up as he does.

    ”YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE!!”

  • Ahh yes, the book that my friend read, then tried to use to explain to me how my miscarriage was actually my fault because I didn't fully manifest my future and didnt think enough positive thoughts.

Should have manifested a quick punch to the throat.

I manifested the end of a 3-year friendship.

You manifested peace from a garbage person. The true secret.

    A+ for early am humor.

My legal guardian read this book and used the messaging of positive thinking to get angry with me when I was sick, had a broken wrist, or appendicitis (all real examples) because I must’ve manifested them with negative thoughts. She would then refuse to take me to the hospital because she wanted me to manifest and think positively. (I’m fine now, all the way across the country and no contact!) Why are so many horrible people using this book to excuse awful, abusive behavior 😭

This book made me so angry so often.

It came out when I had some crazy stuff happening and I’d want to punch anyone who was like “just manifest good thoughts”. But I had to grit my teeth and say “not all situations work like that” and try to change the topic.

It was always some person with this privileged life who never experienced real difficulties they didn’t have control over.

I hope you're not friends anymore

Yeah I stopped reading it half way because every page was just. Think more positive over and over like humans aren’t supposed to experience negative and tragic events in life.

I'm all for the power of positivity, but I'm also a realist, there's times in life where there is nothing optimistic about a situation. You just have to suffer through it. Sure, you can be positive afterwards and focus on the future, but its still going to suck.

💔 Sorry to know this. I had similar experiences with a couple of true believers when I went through tragedies. It becomes very like a religion for many and like religion, devotees need to keep it to themselves.

Yeah, /r/IVF is basically proof that prayers, wishes, and positive thoughts aren’t enough to make wishes come true.

I wouldn’t even say that to someone who’s personally wronged me.

  • It's a long story, but I'm certain this book is at the root of my first fiance leaving me

So in other words, this book did make my life better

Did you happen to picture your fiance leaving then ✨️ they left?

  • Once upon a time I had just gotten my drivers license and tried to use a driveway to turn around. A woman tried to speed up and get around me before I pulled out and I backed into the side of her car HARD. Big dent.

She got out of the car and held both of my hands and said she wants to put good energy into the universe and i should do the same. Asked me if i believed in The Secret. and she refused my insurance info and got back in her car and drove away.

    That's hilarious

It was incredible, my car was a tank so it took no damage. Didn't even have to tell my mom. I mean I did tell my mom but I could have gotten away with not telling her.

Told this story for like ten years before someone said "Oh maybe she was drunk and didn't want the cops to come" but I lived in a nice enough area that it could have been genuine belief in Oprah

  • My uncle swore by this and he said it changed his life. Nope. He’s still the same dumbass that I grew up with.

  • There’s a guy in the documentary named James Arthur Ray. He was kind of a nobody/wannabe philosopher they pulled in to do a few talking heads, and Oprah really liked him when he was one of the guests on her episode about “The Secret”.

This launched his career and he started writing books and doing seminars and selling his services, which grew and grew, eventually culminating in a week-long retreat that people could pay thousands to attend.

At his final retreat, he forced everyone into a sweat lodge; the whole thing built & operated by amateurs, and when people started overheating and having trouble breathing, he bullied them into staying and fighting through the discomfort.

Several people died, & Ray went to prison. There’s a documentary about him trying to revive his career after he got out of prison. It’s called “Enlighten Us” & it’s an interesting watch.

Ray himself died earlier this year.

Wikipedia: “The attendees, who had paid up to $10,000 to participate in the retreat, had fasted for 36 hours during what was claimed to be a vision quest exercise before the next day's purported sweat lodge. During this period of fasting, participants were left alone in the Arizona desert with a sleeping bag, although Ray had offered them Peruvian ponchos for an additional $250.”

    Wtf

this gives me arrested development vibes 😭😭

the part where george goes into a sweat lodge with CEO's or something and selling them expensive lemonade

Exactly what I was thinking lmao

Oprah has been an accomplice for a lot of America's current state of affairs.

Well at least your post has a happy ending.

    Sort of

  • lol that was all the hype early 2000s from the “new age hippie” type.

If u believe it it will come true 🤣

All the hippies now say "manifest"

It basically means the same thing tho

You must (whispers) …. speak it into existence 🤫

  • Oh jeez I remember this was huge! Even in Sweden i watched Oprah rant about it and my mom bought tye book for me (as a 19 year old)

  • I’ll see your Secret and raise you a Celestine Prophecy.

The movie version still haunts me. 😵‍💫

I did read that one and it was horseshit too. The crap Oprah pushed and proper believed is unfathomable

  • I have what I call “the reverse secret” or “stay-puft marshmallow man syndrome”

Whatever terrible outcome I imagine and don’t want - that’s exactly what I’m getting.

Sounds like you need to stop imagining terrible outcomes then my friend

    George is getting upset!

  • (Fart noise)

randomly watching Beavis and Butthead clips tonight and this made me laugh hysterically

  • My mom read this nonsense and it triggered some kind of psychotic episode and sent her spiralling into years of severe mental health issues until we were finally able to get her forcibly committed to a short term mental health unit and have her medicated.

  • "I've never felt better since I started secreting." - Jenna Maroney.

"I'm fluent in Spanish! Rosa, I know you stole my necklace. I'll have your son deported. Oh, wait, I found my necklace." - Jenna Maroney

  • This duped a lot of people

  • This never worked for me! 😡

As it was intended. (Because it’s a scam.)

Not with that attitude it didn’t. ;p

The secret is to sell a lot of books

Maybe you just need to believe harder. It is actually your own fault.

  • noooooooo this shit was the worst hahahahha suburban mom cult. I feel like this was an early warning sign for magaism.

  • My favorite part was the lady watching comedies and laughing her breast cancer away in three months

  • My abusive parents used this to blame me for all of my failures in life. If they'd believed in mental illness instead of this horse crap, I'd probably have had a better childhood.

  • Pretty sure The Secret was to eat carbs and pretend you’re rich

  • I never saw my parents read a book, nor did they own books. The exception is my mother read this book and it’s the only one she owned. I remember a couple of years later seeing a list of things that she wanted to have in her life. As a kid that didn’t have a good relationship with her, this kind of let me into her life and know more about her. It did kind of make me feel sad for her because she wanted the same things I wanted: to be happy and successful.

  • I remember the first time watching this maybe 15 years ago, and I instantly thought that I was a guru lol I remember some rat looking guy saying he uses it to get good parking spots lmao stfu. I do, however, believe that there is a lot of "power" in positive thought. Which is the best thing that I took away from this. It doesnt make your dreams come true and all of that bullshit, but trying to think more positively on a regular basis did improve the quality of my life. And ultimately trying to use the law or attraction doesnt really hurt anyone so whatever.

  • Wish it, want it, do it.

  • My sister was nits about this book. But then again, she also believes in essential oils, crystals, and is a big Twilight fan so….

  • Funny part: there was this game based on the book supposedly helping you in applying the teaching in your life. At the time, I was trying to conceived and had been deamed too old for MAP so I said "Why not? I have nothing to lose". And 6 months later, I was pregnant. My son is soon to be 15.

Disclaimer: it does not prove this positive visualizing is working. Iirc it's even been show as psychologically devastating, as it makes you responsible for the method not to work

  • don’t trust anything that oprah pushes

Or Jim Carrey. I don’t know how he gets a pass especially with his anti vax stance

  • I’m Secreting!

  • One of my ex-gfs was all about the DVD version of this...she went on to do Amway, Vemma, CutCo knives, all the classic scams...she's not exactly the brilliant type 😅

  • So many people over the years would say that they "believed" in this.

    The Alchemist was another one

  • The people who read and believed The Secret are the same ppl who believed that posting "I will not allow Facebook access to my photos" ON Facebook would discredit FB's terms of service.

    HUGE overlap.

  • I liked Catherine Cooksons movie The Secret

  • I remember my mother bringing home this in movie format, watching it at the time as her 10 year old son, with her 8 year old daughter and her 40 year old husband—all of us looking dumbfounded at her by the end.

  • I thought I was looking at candle wax on chest hair for a second

  • The Secret because manifestation and projecting thoughts into the universe sells books. Work your ass off and be determined doesn't sell copies.

  • Oh look, it’s bullshit!

  • “The checks just started showing up in the mail!”

  • The only part of this which can make me nostalgic, was the Simpsons parody on it, when Mrs. Krababble was still alive...

  • SERENITY NOW!

    The Secret

  • My therapist tried to get me into this. She recommended the book. Never got it, but I found the DVD for $3 at a Goodwill. Still haven’t watched it.

  • If you want something all you have to do is completely focus on it and the universe will give it to you.

  • Fuck that piece of shit book.

  • My parents got obsessed with this when I was a kid. They kept talking about positive thinking and even gave me a vision board for things that I want to "manifest". Overall, it's really not a bad way of thinking, but the whole thing feels very cult-like looking back. I'm glad my parents didn't start giving out money or go further than just watching the DVD

  • My best friends mom showed us the “movie” version when I was in 11th grade. She 100000% believed in it, and I wanted to believe in it. So I spent the next week telling myself over and over again that I was going to pass my trigonometry exam.

When the exam came, the only answer I knew was my own name, written right at the top. I literally started crying and handed in a blank test.

Couple decades later and I’m still mad at Mrs. Howard for making me think the universe would give me the answers 😂

  • My mom got so entangled in this. Unfortunately it’s not what they make it out to be at all. The only way to make this even seem to work on the slightest is to also action on your positive mindset. Like for example: you can’t just picture suddenly being a millionaire without actually doing anything to achieve it.

At the very least all this book does is force you to have a positive mindset about the future, but YOU yourself still need to be the driving force to make something happen in your life, no amount of wishful thinking will bring it to you

  • Oh how this book/movie quite literally altered my moms/my life. I literally remember the day this THING came into my life in 2006. After that, my mom wasn’t normal anymore. This was her gateway into bible thumping territory and she hasn’t been normal since.

S/o to my uncle for introducing this to her 🙄

  • Aleister Crowley repackaged for suburban moms.

  • What a load of crap this Law of attraction is! But it sounds so right. Smh

  • I'm almost afraid to say it but it worked for me. I'm ok with the downvotes.

Worked for me too homes. Life is totally different a lot of friends and relatives asked me what my secret is and I just told em to start visualizing what you want.

No one ever believes me or sticks with it to work tho. In 2013 I was bankrupt, unemployed and lived with my Mom and around 2016 everything changed for me financially and I’m married to the best thing that ever happened to me. Thank you Rhonda and the cannabis industry.

But surely you realise that it’s just positive self-affirmation leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Like, there’s literally nothing at play here other than “I have the willpower to make this thing come true” and when it does come true (due to the willpower to make it so) it’s “wow, this is a magic formula to the secret of happiness!”

    It’s just nonsense.

It's more like quantum physics, like Joe dispenza says. However, Ive seen the same repeated in the Bible and other religions. We're all vibrations...I don't really talk to people about it bc then they'll think youre crazy

I saw this VHS tape back in the 90s and didn’t think much of it other than the fact that all religion is based on a similar principle of the benefits of directed thought energy. Going to church every week, reading a bible or holy text, the singing of hymns and such all designed to improve one’s self, family, and community. Even if ‘uneducated’ religion is something a person can become invested in because of ‘faith’. I’m not a religious person, but I believe in the power of the secret because it worked for me.

The problem with the secret is that people expect instant results, like winning the lottery. It just doesn’t work that way. Don’t think of the secret as 3 wishes granted from a genie in a bottle, but more of a positive thinking framework for getting things and behaviors you desire.

My specific example that worked was getting that dream car I always wanted. It actually took more than a year, but imagining the feeling of owning it and sitting behind the wheel and imagining it was mine came true. It’s a long story, but 100% true, and the car is sitting in the garage right now after taking delivery July 3rd, 2012.

My wife and I repeat this mantra every day “Everything is always working out great for us and our family”. We have tweaked it here and there changing great to “amazing”, and recently adding a phrase at the end to give specific good karma for our daughter that was going through a rough time after job changes, and losing her apartment. Took a while, but now she’s starting a new job and has a great new place because everything is always working out great for us and our family

  • I read this silly book in the day and interviewed at a job and I envisioned in my mind the job offer I would get. It was off by $3,000 so I countered with the number I wanted and I got it.

    So, it works!

(I don’t believe it works, but I do believe that if you really want something and are really confident about it, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to get it)

  • Jim Carrey's entire worldview.

  • I bought this book, started to read it, discovered it’s kind of religious, rolled my eyes and returned it.

  • Id read pages of the spanish version of this and A Child Called It when taking a shit as a kid

My mom had both in the bathroom

  • This actually worked for me.

What did it do? Just curious.

    The power of positive thinking

Ok. What kind of power are you talking about?

My dad made me watch the DVD once.

Whatever you think about, you "attract." Think about good things, good things will happen to you. You can make a "vision board" of things you want in life, and they'll manifest for you.

    Do you believe that yourself?

    Nope

Nice. I think it's some sort of weird placebo effect personally.

If you approach your day with positive energy and a positive outlook then you have a better chance of having a good day, of good things happening, because you’re creating that energy/vibe and sharing it with others to be shared back with you. I thought The Secret was BS and at its best is nothing more than the power of positive thinking

The Secret and The Magic are teachings to guide us through life and help us understand how to live positively in society while feeling grateful for what we have and what we will receive. If you open your mind and let life happen naturally and intentionally you will see results. BUT! Life has no guarantees and sickness, sadness and tragedy will be a part of it. Enjoy while you can and always have something to look forward to 🏌️

  • One of my friends got this for me - assured me it would transform my life… Has this actually worked for anyone? Ever?

  • I always thought this was some sort of DaVinci code knockoff.

  • My first boss out of college gave me that book and told me to read it. I ended up quitting the job before I opened the book, and still have never opened the book, but it remains on my bookshelf to this day.

  • Lmao this book and the movie changed my life at age 11

  • Cheques suddenly appearing in your mailbox

  • A Pro Wrestler cut a promo on TV about discovering this book, it was super weird.

  • lol

    well, Rhonda made millions!

  • The grifters handbook.

  • Have you seen that movie from anonymous called Zenith?

  • I had never read this, but I know my father probably still has a copy.

  • This always made me think of that episode of the IT Crowd where Matt Berry joins a cult that operates like the Secret because he wants a robot hand.

“I thought about it, I wrote it down, and then I went out and bought a robot hand!”

  • It's funny that most people know this thing is absurd, but some of those same people also believe in Karma.

  • Who else was forced to watch this in high school? Idk even what fucking class it was for lol

  • Basically manifest

  • My class had to watch the movie. I found it completely dumb and boring. So I had a nice nap instead.

  • My young dumbass bought this book

  • I heard this book did a lot of damage.

  • The movie version of this is still available on free streaming sites. I got drunk a while ago and thought I was about to watch a Da Vinci code sequel which it's not, I couldn't finish it

  • i’m sure this is how i manifested my white nintendo DS when i was 9

  • I remember my fifth grade teacher telling everyone to read this and watch the documentary 😭

  • I have a lot of feelings about this.

  • Everyone should watch this. But it's ALL about the MENTAL game. It talks about "Law of Attraction" focusing you're mental game on positivity and what you want. --- What's missing in the book, Video is ACTION. YOU have to be physically moving towards GOALS with the law of attraction mindset. The combination will get you closer to you're goals. Perhaps it's a great tool for fighting depression during difficult times. KEEP MOVING FORWARD

Read Ben Franklins ‘the way to wealth’ it’s on Amazon, you’ll like it.

  • I remember going into something I guess you could a drug induced psychosis from LSD and this book was gifted to me in that time and I remember just swearing by it to the point people stopped talking to me. This was back in 2012.

  • Oh man, I devoured this back in high school—total gameachanger.

  • This reminds me so much of the Firefly title sequence

  • I remember my uncle had a video to this and I immediately thought it was some mystery adventure movie, he kept trying to temper my expectations and I ended up still being disappointed.

  • We all bought and fell for this bullshit. Sigh...

  • The Secret is woo that appeals to Trump supporters and other self-centered people.

  • The law of attraction, There now you know 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • There was this YT channel where some blond chick who has read this book was going on and on about life being so "juicy"... it was hilarious and sad.

  • Thıs made me full-blown delusıonal when ı was 20

  • One of my friends got hooked on this bullshit and it was sad to watch brain rot away with her new found perspective. Fuck that book!

  • So lame. I remember people getting all excited about this. They thought the most ridiculous things from this silly pretense. They were sooooo annoying to anyone that didn’t agree or didn’t read it. It was like a cult

  • My grade 11 English teacher in Canada in 2007 in public school, used this as mandatory coursework.

I slept through most classes but this one I had to make a poster vision board full of images I was wishing to come true. Brain rot. Felt like an activity for grade school kids.

  • Get this New Thought nonsense out of my sub.

  • It's all about manifestation and taking control of your life...looking past all the Hollywood stars and the money and all that BS this book portrays. This book got me into studying the occult.. hermeticism, esoteric knowledge. IYYK.

Right.. i follow same trace.. but it never stop i read cc and hubbard but there are so much questionably point I know i imagine picture and feel it, tomorow it happen, even dreams told me future sometimes. But the main thing i didnt get it since i watched it This lead me to occult but i dont wanna go there
