I agree. The old format of simply needing X amount of.monsters for X stars card was straight forward and simple, that everyone could get on board and play bevause the rules were simple. Now it is so ridiculous that you could lose without even having a turn to put a card on the field. I stopped collecting and watching the cartoon after Yugioh GX. I stll play the video game which is fre to play btw.
I started recollecting YuGiOh during COVID like everyone else. I disliked the new meta stuff & only collect old cards out of pure nostalgia. Nothing compares to those first 2 YuGiOh seasons.
I used to play the TCG for a while until I got older and couldn’t keep up with all the changes. I miss the OG version. I’m glad some of the newer games in the series at least offer an option to play a specific generation for those who didn’t move in with the changes.
Agreed. 35 now- nostalgia brought me back into it for like a month. Way too overwhelmed by the rules and new kinds of cards. And apparently ultra rare cards are actually quite common lol. I already don’t have time, so I have it up. But I do miss the original days and I probably enjoyed it more then since I was a kid.
I was a player back in like 2004 or so, when people actually tried to play exodia. I ran a beat down deck, using the various 1800 attack like the harpy brother (1800 was the max attack for normal monsters) but I had the two special tournament pack cards, the Gemini twins that had 1900 and some kind of dual beast card that had 1850 attack (if you remember the name please let me know, its hard to remember) Combine that with the axes that give +1000 and other magic and trap cards, plus the jinzo canceled out traps. I won most games back then in like 2005. My uncle would always win the state tournaments and I would always make second place and get some packs (but they shuffled them so I couldn't use the 6-12 trick to pull the rares) so I just ended up with some hunk of stupid plastic pyramid necklace bullshit I had like 7 of. It wasn't even a puzzle, just a stupid piece of plastic.
Showing up at meijers at 6am on a Monday because they just put all boxes of booster packs out and with yugioh you could be sure that every 6th and 12th pack In each side of the boxes would contain the rares, every other box had one of these 4 packs containing a "secret rare". It was guaranteed in every box of packs, no matter what. It made yugioh really easy to get the best of the best.
It's not fun now IMO. I tried multiple times to get into it but I just build vibe decks. My last one was a ragnaraika, sunavalon plant deck that had amazing recycle potential.
Couldn't even teach meta decks and it was still a pretty strong deck.
The main TCG play spots in my city still full of people, you can recognize the YU GI OH or Magic section by looking to the areas where no child can be seen playing, is al, grown and middle aged men.
I grew up playing Pokémon, yugioh and then magic. I think yugioh was my favorite. I played it until all the rules changed and turned to shit and every player started making 15+ moves a turn. Too many chain cards, too many “thing card brings out this monster” cards. I miss old yugioh. If they ever introduced a new set with the old rules, I’d prob jump back into it.
Of topic but... Its year 2008, or 2009 and Nokia 6600 ran on Symbian, which allowed for gba games to be played. There was this Yu-Gi-Oh! game (cant remember which one) that was kinda RPG and I think you could put some cheat codes in, which then allowed you to unlock cards. The rules were a bit different I think, but it was easier to play or summon these cards. That was fun.
Bro, there are still countless people that go to the local game store every week to play this and magic. You gotta quickly google Yu-Gi-Oh! and probably found local tournaments.
I remember making fun of it back in college as a Magic: The Gathering player. I had a friend tech me how to play, kind of tolerated it for a month or two.
Never understood why they decided to use tiny cards, then make the rules text have to fit into an even tinier rules box. Also did those star icons on top and the Chinese looking symbol on the top right even do anything?
Did it go somewhere?
Down the drain, if you ask the current players.
They say that for every booster or meta change then it’s instantly the best again.
The community says that all the time. Just like Magic.
And yet it’s never been more popular
Nobody hates the game more than the players.
I hear both sides. It just depends on the player. For me I like the game casually and the game is fine.
Honestly feels like half of us just blinked and suddenly grew up. One day you’re summoning Exodia, next day you’re paying bills.
Summoning Exodia to getting summoned to court
It left after turn 1 since any deck that can't FTK (first turn kill) you is worthless.
R.i.p. Yugioh
Unplayable
Got replaced by Magic : The Gathering…
Rip my childhood
Wouldn't say replaced by MTG as MTG predates it by over half a decade and was almost always the more popular game between the two regardless.
A lot of people still play it...
Gotta admit though current format sucks and is overly complicated
Someone says that about every new current format. We can all universally agree that pendulum sucked and was overly complicated.

I’ve been wanting to get back into it but I just rather watch my friends play. I’ve tried learning modern format and it was too hard.
I had a more fun time learning card fight vanguard
My kids (8,10) are currently obsessed
For real, the scene is still huge. Walk into any card shop on a Friday and it’s wall to wall duelists.
I started recollecting YuGiOh during COVID like everyone else. I disliked the new meta stuff & only collect old cards out of pure nostalgia. Nothing compares to those first 2 YuGiOh seasons.
No blue eyes white?!
There are only three of them in the whole world.
Extremely rare.
There was a 4th. It belonged to Yugi's grandfather.
Yugi: “Hey Joey! Earth to Joey! Hey, are you in there? It's your move!”
Joey: “Sorry, Yug, doing this Brooklyn accent makes it difficult to concentrate on card games.”
“F*** you, Mokuba”
"Screw the rules, I have money!"

Yup, I’m 36. We’re in the same boat, my man.
Exodia, Obliterate!
Remember when they gave out cards for the movie? Idk if they were all Pyramids of Light but mine was lol
We got a Winged Kuriboh card for that!
Let's d-d-d-d-d-duel!
Had a random game on PS2 knowing nothing about it and having no Internet..... Man was that a interesting learning experience for a kid😂

Yeah I played the 1st gen game when it was a thing during high school.
Hell I'm looking at the final three episodes from dual monster right now. Little yugi wasn't playing lol
I still play the video games
The main TCG play spots in my city still full of people, you can recognize the YU GI OH or Magic section by looking to the areas where no child can be seen playing, is al, grown and middle aged men.
Those god cards are the wrong color!
Watch day9 play this for the first time, it's hilarious watching the ridiculous combos
I remember ygotas. It'll always be Slifer the Executive Producer.
only card game i got into but i loved this shit
Turn the god cards around and let's see if they're fake.
Zooming in on the rules for Slypher just reads as massively complicated.
I can't play it anymore. I tried to learn the new cards and rules, but it just got too weird for me.
How could you draw all five pieces of exodia!?
If you really want to know Kaiba, then TALK TO THE HAND

This is love
Me and my friends did a tourney and played with a case of each of the 25th anniversary reprints

Still have my 3 Egyptian gods!
It still exists
Somewhere I have a binder with Obelisk and Slifer and I’ve no clue where it ended up

It's still going, you know
Whoever owns monster cards without any effects on them, are true OG.
