Full agree... I listened to be creeped out, but kinda think it sounds .. cute? If it had some sorta hiss or clicking, it'd be nightmare fuel, but the little squeaks are sweet!
I saw a video on Reddit years ago with a gibbon seeing a spider and it freaked out.
Because they can be poisonous, our ancestors evolved to naturally freak out at the sight of that proportion of body to legs.
Some people have it more, some less. Some don't have it at all, maybe due to conditioning/environment more than genetics, but it's just a default fear that tends to be the norm.
I read that the silhouette of a spider caused a universal fight or flight response; dilated pupils, increased heart rate and breathing, etc. It was opined that crabs big enough to carry off young might be emblazoned in the human psyche from prehistoric times. Edited to change the word “ancient”.
Interesting. At the same time, I have never been scared of crabs, even those giant ones they show climbing palm trees. If I saw one in a tank as a kid, I looked with curiosity rather than disgust or fear.
If this is real, that's unbelievably loud for an arachnid, even if it is a big one
Edit: apparently it's not true vocalisation, they produce the sound by rubbing bodyparts together like grasshoppers. So not as wild as an actually screaming arachnid, but still cool though!
It's called stridulation. It's where sound is made by rubbing two appendages together. It's similar to, say, quickly running a fingernail across a bedsheet to make a high-pitched zippy sound.
I'm not a doctor of terrifying things, but the Google machine says no, it's an exaggeration created by freaked out soldiers in the bush when they heard giant spiders making ANY noise. Sounds reasonable to me. Apparently they hiss and make noises by rubbing their legs together.
My 5-year-old saw one of these in a video one night, and it scared her so badly that she made me check everywhere for a month to make sure there were none. I get it, but we don't have camel spiders where we live.
This seems like the type of creature that’s found by someone nice in a movie and because it makes that cute sound, the nice guy is like “Hey little buddy, don’t be scared”. Then the spider slowly sniffs his hand and maybe nuzzles his palm and the nice guy smiles and says “there you go, see, nothing to worry about”. Then the spider lunges forward and latches onto the nice guys hand and buries itself underneath his skin, so dude freaks the fuck out. Everything goes quiet and calm for a second and then the spider bursts out of our guys chest Xenomorph style.
Cute lil demon thing
/r/awwtf

Poor terrified squeak
Finally, I have something in common with a spider.
You’re both hairy…
Camel spiders are scary but harmless
Surprisingly they’re not spiders or camels
Walrus
It does look like a walrus grew an extra upside-down snout, now you mention it.
Doesn't explain the legs though. Walruses definitely don't have legs.
Some kind of unholy hybrid?
Camers? Spidels?? Spicamderels???
They hunt and kill the critters that are actually harmful. They're bug bros. 😁
I thought they ate camel brains?
Or borrowed into their flesh while sleeping (that was actually the story)
Ya this is what I heard growing up. Was told they have a bite that numbs you so you can't feel them burrowing, lol.
Aww cute little nope
I’ll never understand why people denigrate spiders so much. They’re great!

But, spiders feel creepy to me and always have.
It's all really interesting to think about.
Ah nice, we would scream together
These things scare ppl bc they're shade seekers meaning in a hot desert they seem like they're chasing you bc they're moving to stay in your shadow.
Oh hell naw
How though? Anyone know the biology behind this.
I'm also interested!

Huh, TIL! They’re basically a scarier desert cricket!
Honestly, kinda confusing hearing that cute little noise come out of that thing.
Not a camel and not a spider
Cutefying!
Is this a real video? Can an expert vouch at least about the sound.

A little over 20 years ago, camel spider memes were the pinnacle of internet comedy for about two weeks.
Comedy? That wasn’t my take. They’re horrifying.
Holy shit! That thing gave me starship troopers vibe. Yuck.
It's kinda cute
I need a full analysis of their usefulness to the ecosystem on my desk by Friday or I’m submitting a formal request for species nullification
That sound was added, they don’t make noises like that
Aww that’s kinda cute
This little guy looks like the warrior bugs from Starship Troopers.
I would scream if I saw one so the feeling is mutual.

Are those her eggs in the background?
Australia?
Strangely enough they can be found in just about every major desert region on Eath except Australia.

The only good bug is a dead bug

It's a starship troopers reference. It really looks like one of the bugs in the movie
