Depends on who you ask. Everyone will have a different opinion. I prefer AC/DC over Guns and Roses for the 80s. For the 90s I'd say Tool but I love Primus too, Les Claypool is a monster on bass.
I was never a big fan but they had some okay songs. A friend of mine said, you have to go see them live they are great. I went to a show on their last tour actually the 1st stop on the tour. They decided they didn’t want to play their hits just their new stuff. It didn’t go over well and they changed their set list for every other show.
Now anytime he asks if I want to go to a show my response is am I going to get u2’ed by this band.
Late 80s they were unbelievable no doubt about it, Appetite for Destruction was and still is an amazing record. Whether they were the best? Always going to be subjective, they were certainly massive, the Use Your Illusion tour set attendance records IIRC.
Hot take: appetite for destruction is a top to bottom banger, all their other stuff is mid
UYI I/II reminds me of Load/Reload. Swap the songs around and you get one CD of bangers and one of meh.
No.
No

Primus Sucks
They suck so bad they're not even in my playlist
Appetite is the only one of their albums I listen to.
IDK but they will be at Snapdragon 9/2/26 FYI.
No
Not even close. The list of who’s better is longer than their career
Not at all.
No
To answer the second part of OPs question, Soundgarden, to name but one. I will also hear arguments for Metallica, REM, The Cure, hell even U2.
I will argue against u2. I would rather listen to a cat vomit on repeat for the rest of my life than to ever hear another u2 song.
Come now, World's greatest worship band.

You’ve clearly never heard of The Spaghetti Incident.
Sonic Youth were consistent through both decades
AiC
Hell no
Not even in the top 10
Not even top 20
My vote would be Led Zeppelin
For 80’s/90’s?
I think you’d have to go with them. Appetite for Destruciton is the best album ever ImO. Not as impressed with the Use your illusions but still good
Appetite for Destruction is their only album that's great. It was good enough to maybe call them great through the 80's, but not the 90's.
Not even close. Metallica.

The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock and roll band of all time
