Why does the boyfriend/girlfriend title exist when you’re not friends and in a relationship?

You’re allowed to say partner, significant other, or any number of alternatives

Once were passed the dating stage ive always used the term partner since i was like 20. Its a much better term in general in my opinion. The word friend allows for certain lines to be crossed and is a different way of looking at and treating someone. Compared to partner it has a completely different meaning and emphasis behind it. Least thats how ive always thought.

Out of most of my past relationships, I have been friends with them before we started dating. It made us ENCREDIABLE lovers! We already knew so much about each other.

Because your partner should be your best friend. I've only been interested in friends.

And manfriend/womanfriend just doesn't have the same ring to it.

How can you be in a relationship with someone and not consider them a friend? That doesn't compute for me.

For me, a relationship is a deep and very comfortable friendship, with some added layers to it. Not something completely different.

Same. Like how are you in a romantic relationship without also considering this person your friend, possible best friend

If you're not friends, it's not a relationship. It's an... arrangement.

Well firstly, one should hope you are friends with someone in a romantic relationship... but anyways, there are lots of other terms you could use, e.g.:

    lover

    significant other

    life partner

    friends with benefits

    fak buddies

    other half

    bae/boo

    my person

    consort

    honey

    my precious

I just say my man because I'm not 14. He is still my friend though, I would hope your partner is your friend too whatever you want to call them.

Well my wife has always been my best friend, my last relationship didn't work out because that's what we lacked, friendship.
