Last year at this time we were in Scotland. My GF and I got totally different forecasts from Apple weather. My said 8-10 inches of snow where we were while hers said 1-2 inches. Hers was right. Still can’t understand how we would get totally different forecasts for the same location on the same app.
I have used both AccuWeather and the Apple weather app. I have learned that the Apple weather app was consistently more accurate than the AccuWeather app, despite having to pay a yearly subscription to the AccuWeather app. 😄
I am tempted to cancel my AccuWeather app subscription due to its frequent inaccuracies compared to the Apple weather app.
The AccuWeather forecast app will only warm me about a rain storm when legitimately the rain drops are already dropping. At least the Apple weather app gives me a 15 minute heads up so I have time to bring in the clothes I have drying out on the clothesline. 😄
Have you ever used or looked at NorCast weather app? It is free and seems to use forecasts from them (I think it was created for / by “NorEaster Nick”). It’s probably been the best one I’ve used. I think it might be more based on / around South Jersey though for overall accuracy.
Just curious if you have what you think of the app and its forecasting.
Good to know. My wife had said he was a meteorologist (probably thought he was based on when she would see the stuff on Facebook) and I never went and looked into it. On the plus side his app isn’t as wildly inaccurate as some of them have been for me.
I’ve been using Foreca since they killed Dark Sky. I don’t know if it’s accurate. Shit, why bother leaving my house. Does it matter if there’s even snow? Just mention the word and everyone drives like an idiot regardless.
Al Roker (NBC) has gone to National coverage instead of local, so their forecasting has changed.
But I’m (very) old school: in days of yore, New Jerseyians would tune into WWOR’s (ch 9) Lloyd Lindsay Young (“Science!”) at 10pm. If he was vibrating with excitement..we knew it was going to be a “KaBoom” snowstorm.
It used to be a habit that I’d grab one of those free “vehicle trader” fliers from the local supermarket around thanksgiving.
If there were a ton of 3/4 ton pickup trucks with plows for sale …
…that was my sign that the last ~3 winters had been mild and these guys couldn’t eat the cost of another winter season without plowing revenue… basically small businesses startup failures.
But this also meant we were due to get whaled on for snow.
My brother bought a snow blower two seasons ago and it worked for him - it is still brand new and unused. I'm heading over after work to help him fill it with oil and get it started so he will be ready.
This simply does no apply anymore now that humans have created an entirely new temperature landscape for our planet. Suggesting that things can return to whatever you consider “average” is naive
I am looking at the radar. I don’t see where the precipitation is coming from. I wish there was a weather radar forecast that shows what direction the precipitation is coming from
Hmm yeah it looks like there is a chunk up above Wisconsin and Michigan...but I don't see anything south or west of us. I don't understand where this prediction is coming from either.
Exactly. That is all I see as well. Typically if we are about to get a snow storm, I see the precipitation radar with precipitation activity hovering over Ohio by now. But I don’t see anything at the moment.
I feel like with how high the weather current is streaming, the majority of the snow would hit Canada and Northwest New York. The clockwise rotation of that weather pattern seems to dissipate as more time past. I will check again tomorrow afternoon and see where that weather pattern transforms to next.
Understandings that forecast weather radar is really just a computer model that shouldn't be taken verbatim, use www.pivotalweather.com. Pay for the monthly subscription to get a Zoomed in NJish view.
If this was a coastal system, then the snow would hit the southern part of New Jersey instead of the north east and north west part of New Jersey. I just checked the 24 hour snow forecast on the AccuWeather forecast app and it shows that the snow would be coming north west from the Michigan and Wyoming precipitation system that is currently developing. If that is the case, I do not see us getting a significant amount of snow.
Apple weather is denying everything. This is the biggest fight our family is having this Christmas
Apple weather is the most inaccurate piece of shit weather app available. I have gotten into arguments with my mom about the weather because of it.
Agreed, and can’t believe they bought and shut down the best weather app of all time (Dark Sky) to do it
I said these very words this morning. I miss Dark Sky so damn much!
i use carrot now! very very close to dark sky!
Agreed, although we did call it “Lyin’ Dark Sky”

I agree its total garbage. Snow totals are always wrong
Totally wrong would you say?
Looks like it was right where we are.
You all are probably just holding it wrong
Read this article I wrote about a winter system in February. It'll answer a lot of this lol: https://shorelocalnews.com/from-apps-to-meteorologists-inside-the-feb-20-noreaster-snow-forecast-confusion/

RIP Dark Sky
Not if Apple had anything to do with it
download carrot, that’s what i use now - it’s very similar to dark sky!
Wunderground continues to be the GOAT.
The argument against it is last week’s snow when Apple was wrong
We litigated this so thoroughly lmao

All FREE weather apps work the same.
Computer models in = Computer models out.
No human input, no understanding of the local terrain, just data (and collects our data). That's why it's free.

Nick and I are friends! Nick and I get along. Nick is not a Meteorologist, though.
Good to know. My wife had said he was a meteorologist (probably thought he was based on when she would see the stuff on Facebook) and I never went and looked into it. On the plus side his app isn’t as wildly inaccurate as some of them have been for me.
Yeah, we're dealing with this a lot in the weather community. I'm the chair of Digital Meteorologist for the American Meteorological Society this year. We just put out an note about knowing your source and how to conduct yourselves online. Here's it on my FB page: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1333153975285758&set=pb.100057735053596.-2207520000&type=3

Weather.gov > accuweather > weather.com > apple weather
My personal controversial sequence.
We watched NBC New York before midnight and they said under an inch in the city. wABC says 4-8”. It’s wild.
(I tend to trust Lee Goldberg.)
Hopefully that's who said under an inch lol.
(Narrator: it was not)
Totals keep creeping up.

“it's a trip, it's got a funky beat, and I can bug out to it.” I too was a fan of Young. Back when channel 9 was old movies and Mets games.
For the youngsters out there who don’t know who were talking about, YouTube has some old clips, like this one to enjoy.
Blast from the past. I haven't thought about him in decades. His forecasts were entertaining to say the least.
Snow blower ready!
Can't wait to go back to work Friday night. It's gonna be an interesting commute on the Turnpike Friday night (exit 16-12) and back home Sat morning
I'm hoping it ends up being nothing because it's projected to hit when I'm leaving work.
Same, the street to my job never gets plowed and my breaks were failing last time and wouldn’t let me stop 😭
Then it will be close to 60 on Monday.
Law of averages - we've enjoyed a few mild winters and now it is time to pay the piper...

Law of Snowblowers - I decided against getting one this year and now I'll pay the piper...
this time decided to not to bring out snowbloer from shed and prep it. i will be paying :((

Right? It just seems too far North already
The models have had the snow coming south from the north around a low coming east from west for over a week now.
Its a robust clipper system, not a low running up the coast .

Check out windy.com
Neat site!!
A weather site that shows a radiation exposure overlay??? I never knew I needed this in my life!
I mean… I don’t really, but it’s a nice just in case that I’d never remember when I needed it.

Working a 25 hour shift due to this… I love snow but I ain’t looking forward to this one.
Christ. More of this bullshit.
I get out on Friday and shovel before bed to try to prevent the later ice from making it too heavy.
Hate working snow and the people that like snow.
hate you back babe
