I showed up a few minutes late and didn't see any sign of boats, so not sure that they actually crossed the Delaware today. Still really cool to see all the reenactors, especially when they fired the cannons.
Next year will be the 250th anniversary of the crossing!
Get wrecked, Hessians!
The score so far: Patriots: 249 / Hessians: 0
Do they do this every year? I’ll sign up for next year’s event!
Yep, every year. It's fun of it's not too cold and windy. This year was pretty cold and windy
If it’s cold and windy that just makes it more realistic of a reenactment. If less than 2 people freeze to death it’s not an accurate portrayal!
Ok i hear you and I admire your commitment to historical accuracy, but my nose gets so cold and then it starts running and then my scarf gets all wet from a mixture of my breath and my snot and it's just a whole big, hurtful mess
I work outdoors 12 hour days and the runny nose is constant from November- March/ April. I hate it so much and my nose is so sore already lol
A reenactment with less than two deaths is considered a dull affair.
Where does this take place? Is there a website for time/location?
Heres the website.
https://www.washingtoncrossingpark.org/cross-with-us/
And they do it 2 times. Christmas day is a smaller thing but a few weeks earlier they have a day of activities set up.
Thank you very much!!
Titusville, NJ. The park by the bridge on the river. There's a park called Washington crossing Park
Idk about a website, Google Washington's crossing reenactment, I'm sure something will pop up
Nope. The reenactment is on PA side.
Here’s the website for all the Revolutionary reenactments in
https://revolutionarynj.org/
Ed: wrong website
Very cool website. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome. I used to reenact as a camp follower. It’s really fun to participate. Folks are very welcoming. I especially enjoyed the Monmouth Battle reenactment. Lots of gunfire. Everyone has a blast.
"But fear not men: a hot dog will not be made of dog."
There’s a little kicking
I gotchu fam. Washington's Dream 2 - SNL
Nobody knows.
Just… go over the side, sir?
🫡 🙃 🫠 🏊♂️ 🫥
Hi, I was there too. They didn't launch the boat because the water was too shallow today as there's a sandbar in the middle. One of the reenactors said it's about a 1/3 chance they cross each year.
We went to watch the Battle of Trenton reenactment one year. It was fun, and actually really interesting!
OK, New Jersey, please read this, Do not follow the PA side site. They charge you to attend and parking is hard. Go to the Jersey side where they will give you free hot cider and lots of love. The PA side is where the troops left from. All the world changing stuff happened on the Jersey side. If you dont want to spend your Christmas Day watching come to the Jersey side second Sunday in December for the rehearsal. They Jersey side has all kinds of cool stuff like reenactors of both sides, food, and people to explain what happened. The Jersey side site is wcpa-nj.com. Big new Visitors Center to open in late spring. Dont miss it. for all things happening this exciting 250 th year of freedom in Western Mercer Co, see https://www.hopewellvalleyhistory.org/, currently featuring Patriots Week in Trenton. All very fun, come visit us!
We went last year, watched from the PA side, and did not have to pay. We did have to park about a half mile away.
There’s a rehearsal crossing a couple of weeks ahead of time, and I think you may have to pay for that. Could that be what you’re thinking of?
I always thought they did this on New Year's Day if it's on Christmas Day I'll go next year and watch it
Perfect weather. 50 degrees. Not much wind. Not raining or snowing. Ideal....... except they didn't cross 😞
For those who went this year, 2025, is because the water level was too low for them to make it over the sand bar in the river.
And what of the men of color?
You asked about measuring temperature?
No I did not.
John cena?
Omg they were at the dey mansion a couple months ago. It was so cool!
The guy in picture #3 looks like Mark Wahlberg.
Nice! I just wish Washington was being played by Nate Bargatze 🤣
How did the town of Washington’s Crossing get its name?
Nobody knows.
How dumb were the Hessians that they couldn’t figure out what was going to happen at the place called Washington Crossing?
And why did George Washington risk taking a boat across? THERE'S A BRIDGE RIGHT THERE!
It's not even that impressive to take a boat across, I've crossed the river in an innertube.
My mom grew up in Bucks County, and swears by this story. When she was in high school, a group of students "borrowed" some marching band uniforms that looked suspiciously like British Redcoats. They commandeered a boat, rowed out to the middle of the icy Delaware, and actually intercepted the reenactment. They managed to force Washington’s boat to retreat. It was the only naval victory the British ever secured in Bucks County!
ETA: Apparently, I had the story wrong: upon doing a bit of research, it appears they dressed up as Hessians and not British soldiers.
Yeah... Gotta call bullshit on this one
Feel free to call bullshit, but there are actual photographs of it - if you check out the comments on this Facebook post, someone posts a picture and a few folks reference it. Looks like it was the class of 1968 from Council Rocks that did it.

Americans need to take lessons from our founding fathers. Take that as you all will.
This looks fun!

I always kind of chuckle at the famous paintings of their crossing.
Granted it was probably a harsh winter that year, but the paintings always look like they're crossing the Bering Straits. The rivers maybe 300' wide there and pretty shallow. Their whole passage probably took 5 minutes.
The paintings always look like they're sailing over the bounding main. Most days you can probably wade across it.
Emmanuel Leutze was German and used the Rhine for his depiction of the Delaware.
Who won? Lol
