  • She can give him the medal but I think she would remain the official winner

Well, I mean technically he'd still be able to show it to people as something given to him.

It's not like Trump doesn't take pride in stuff he didn't actually create the conditions for.

Just like how he's the winner of the Club World Cup while the actual winning team got a replica

Someone needs to tell him off to his face. I mean REALLY tell him off.

Won't accomplish anything. He'd have to be introspective for it to mean anything.

I think it would be easy to make him cry. He's super insecure

Obama probably made him cry. He literally paid prostitutes to pee on the same hotel bed Obama slept on in Russia

    If that's true it's pathetic

He would probably just get ICE to kill you....

Of course he's insecure but it doesn't mean he's going to cry. He's way too unaware and hiding away in his own shell for protection. He won't hear anything

You can't reason with people like him. They have to face consequences for being a shit person. Sadly it doesn't seem like he will.

He may not but it doesn't mean that the ideology survives. After he dies, what do we do to punish those that enabled him? That's what we should be thinking

He'd just whine that you were being "nasty"

Bro thinks they're like infinity stones

She was funded by the families of the right wing military Junta that used to rule Venezuela, famous for their links to the oil companies and torturing dissidents, including the family of the current acting president.

Shes up to her neck In. Blood money

Not uncommon for that joke of an award honestly. Lotta shitheel winners.

Ever since they gave it to Kissinger the prize has been a joke. At this point the Ig Nobel Peace Prize has more value

  • He is truly the most pathetic human being on Earth. I mean, even if you loved this guy's policies, you'd have to agree that on a personal level he's just so extremely pathetic and childish. Right? Right?!

Oi, take it easy on the children. At least they understand that they cannot have the hotwheels after the fourth stern no and death stare

This is just a brain that is incapable of functioning properly dating back to the 1990s.

    childish

Even children mostly understand instinctively that participation trophies are worthless and can even be a source of shame for them.

Trump is at a lower level of development where he just wants the shiny thing without understanding the context of it.

Do football fans hold the best player on their team morally accountable?

I think this just makes him cool to his fans

Strong arming a Nobel Peace prize away? Another bit of norm-shattering bravado

I think they rationalize it as "he's le epic master troll"

He’s stark raving mad. If Shakespeare were alive, we’d have a new play.

  • Democrats probably could make up a best human in the world award and get him to agree to a Single Payer healthcare system.

The worst thing I can imagine is if Trump's team tried to implement a single payer healthcare system

"Now as you see here, these are the race and religion tiers. BTW we are using interpretations from 1870s."

"Phrenology. What a great science. How do these people come up with such good science? I'll tell you how, we got the best science people working on this and they say access to care based on Phrenology is the future!"

"Trumpcare. The only health insurance YOU need!"

"Mam, unfortunately we are going to have to deport your uterus"

I honestly think we could disprove dialectical materialism just by surrounding Trump with conventionally attractive and charismatic MAGA communists. Some real Blanquist stuff would go down.

Isn't that why Miller and co know now to never let him talk to anyone unsupervised?

Yeah, and it's part of why people are making memes about Trump being like an ancient Chinese Emperor with a court steering him.

Never pictured Miller as the head of the Court Eunuchs before.

We’d end the month with Maduro back in office

"I’m a conservative on most issues but a liberal on health. It is an unacceptable but accurate fact that the number of uninsured Americans has risen to 42 million. Working out detailed plans will take time. But the goal should be clear: Our people are our greatest asset. We must take care of our own. We must have universal healthcare.

Our objective [should be] to make reforms for the moment and, longer term, to find an equivalent of the single-payer plan that is affordable, well-administered, and provides freedom of choice. Possible? The good news is, yes. There is already a system in place-the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program-that can act as a guide for all healthcare reform. It operates through a centralized agency that offers considerable range of choice. While this is a government program, it is also very much market-based. It allows 620 private insurance companies to compete for this market. Once a year participants can choose from plans which vary in benefits and costs." (Trump, The America We Deserve, (c) 2000, starting p. 206)

    What happened man? ಠ_ಠ

The ghostwriter who wrote that book was either fired or quit in disgust.

    Real (͡•_ ͡• )

  • Literally the most thin skinned and easily manipulated world leader by a mile. Pathetic.

  • Have you Americans tried switching the US on and off to see if this bug gets fixed??

Last person who tried that got shot in the head by an actor.

Charles Guiteau was more of a general crank than an actor

Might’ve been referencing John Wilkes Booth.

    Edwin Booth’s brother? That’s a deep pull.

That won't be enough. The entire branch is broken. I'd recommend

git checkout main; git reset year2010 --hard

  • Some goofus wrote a lengthy comment the other day claiming "no really really this was all very rational and Trump didnt reject her because of the Nobel. The Washington Post must have gotten it wrong." Oh well

This past week has been filled with the goofiest wishcast posts trying to make sense of trump’s position.  At least it’s been amusing arguing with them.

  • National Embarrassment 🤡

Exactly. Sometimes the news enrages me, but sometimes it just embarrasses me.

  • If this results in a regime change, the history books and IR theory on the 2020s will indeed be something.

It won't. The minute Trump has the prize from Machado, he'll discard her completely.

  • FIFA Peace Prize in shambles!

  • why is it relevent to r/neoliberal...well it's about the fun times in Venezuela. Honestly just the headline and i can barely type this because im speechless that we live in this current timeline. I will not fed post.

anyways he's meeting with the opposition leader....maybe.

anyways this is painful, but on a completely unrelated note i like this song

I’ll always associate that song with an edit of Luke Skywalker in the Mandalorian

Yeah what do major events related to world peace and global diplomatic relations have to do with neoliberalism?

  • You couldn’t pay me enough to grovel in front of Trump

I think a real leader does whatever they can to help their country, including grovelling in front of a tyrant.

Yeah, Zelenskyy is an example of this. Dude will do absolutely anything to try and save his people. You can sometimes tell he does not like Trump but he will smile along if it means getting his country what it needs.

Machado is doing what she thinks she has to do and I’m not going to judge her for it. It can’t be easy being in that position.

Dude will do absolutely anything to try and save his people.

Except, y'know, actually make any real moves towards a peace deal.

Every time there are talks, he will do something to sabotage them, or EU or UK will, as it is in their interest to keep the war with Russia going so they have more time to prepare as Ukraine bleeds white.

In April of 2022 everything was ready for both leaders to sign off, then BoJo flew in with promises of everything, except of course those promises of support weren't really kept, but Europe keeps stringing Ukraine along with unkept promises of greater commitment.

What is clear is that Zelenskyy loves power and will do anything to remain in power. Anyone in power in Ukraine right now has access to more money than has ever flowed through that area in history. A spigot of Western money, the people in power would have to be insane to shut it off.

You also forget that since no elections have been held since 2019, every other politician regardless of how much they hate Zelenskyy still likes to maintain their own position. Speaking of maintaining positions, all the occupied towns still have their mayors and all the other civil service people drawing cushy salaries, not to mention all those projects that are done in frontline cities that get bombarded and then captured -- but right before, they get a park or a stadium. All of this is paid by the EU.

Zelenskyy's inner circle looks absolutely ghastly now, it is shrinking and shrinking with corruption scandals and everyone has been in every role. What's also interesting is that they're mostly old buddies of his from his comedy company. Very reminiscent of Putin's own inner mafia circle of his buddies from his early St Petersburg days.

Unless you are Ukrainian, speaking Ukrainian and actually keep up with Ukrainian news, read all the articles about the power struggles and the corruption, you're just another clueless Westie who dickrides someone your country's propaganda told you to like. I'm sick of everyone on reddit, but especially on this sub, everyone knows less about Ukraine than an average 2yo knows about Disney but somehow everyone has a strong opinion that is usually stuck in autumn-ish of 2022 at best, not the reality of 2026.

Before you say but Russia blah blah will blah blah if peace is reached, what, what will Russia do worse than a full-scale war that among other things made 11mln people leave Ukraine according to an official admission a couple of days ago? It is Ukraine that needs peace to regroup, not Russia, contrary to headlines that somehow paint a worse picture for Russia day by day even though somehow Russia advances, day by day.

Each year passes, Ukraine loses more land, manpower crisis is more dire and most importantly more people die but peace conditions get worse. Zelenskyy doesn't care, he is hoping for a random Hail Mary because he doesn't give a shit as long as he and his buddies are in power. He has no plan, he literally says it all the time by dropping hints there or here, like he says "well I am young and Putin is old" okay, but Putin like Trump is a roach that will probably live too long, at least another 5-10yrs, how many Ukrainians will die? What is the point of land, some measly scraps of Donbass left that he won't concede so Putin can make his big victory parade of how he got a smoking heap after 4-5yrs of war and maybe a million dead&wounded. Kamikaze country, that's what some people are calling Ukraine.

And the people, well, that's a long story, I can share a lot of anecdotes about the people around me, but basically everyone is avoiding service but also don't wanna settle for peace (well most do but it is "peace" in the sense that nothing has to be given up) because all official news are heavily censored, only one source for official war news is permitted on TV, Telemarathon and most real opposition parties got banned, opposition figures charged with crimes (including Poroshenko, the last President, ironically the war hawk but charged with treason) and now you can't even speak the language most Ukrainians speak or worship the church most Ukrainians used to follow. Can't leave the country as a man, a new wall is being built on the border with Romania to keep people in while many have already died trying to escape. Soooooo much freedom and concern for people!!!

Edit: lol you downvoted me so soon after me posting this that it was sooner than you could read this, I assume 1 min isn't enough to read and have something sink in. I'm sure you can explain to me and my Ukrainian passport how my own understanding of my situation is hopelessly wrong.

Except, y'know, actually make any real moves towards a peace deal

Lol, the only peace Putin wants is total subjugation of Ukraine.

You know it, I know it, everyone knows it.

Yes, and a lot of people want a lot of things, but they won't get them, this is the real world. Also, I don't think total subjugation was the goal at all, look at what Putin tried initially, he wanted regime change to a more submissive one, he brought a regime-change force, not an occupying one -- 180K is peanuts for that, the Ukrainian military outnumbered that by 4-5 times in 2022. His objectives changed since the war began, with early failures Putin just kept changing objectives on the fly, because original ones weren't met. He even managed to annex land by this point, but even in the wildest dreams, subjugating Western Ukraine is bonkers. Even Kyiv probably isn't on the table, he wants a puppet regime there.

Instead of citing amazing citations as "everyone knows it" why not look at actual concrete peace offers? April of 2022 one or the recent 28-point plan. These deals are getting worse, and tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are dying, with hundreds of thousands apparently crippled (this war is really bad for that, both sides face incredibly high amputation rates as drones and mines blow off limbs).

Since you seem an expert at divining what everyone thinks or knows, tell me what is Zelenskyy's plan? Because I don't think he knows it either, again, he only keeps hinting that money should continue be given to him, no elections, and no end in sight to the war that he has been steadily losing since the last success at Kherson/Kharkiv in 2022.

How this "saves Ukrainian people" I dunno. At the very least I would start by allowing men to leave the country since at least it won't seem like an open air prison forcing men into slaughter, but with the wall going up on the border that doesn't seem to be likely. I understand that draft is necessary, but not allowing people to leave is North Korea/USSR, when US had a draft, people could leave and same goes for Russia today. You are supposed to defend your own country, yes, but you can give it up and leave too.

    Much texto

Putin is never going to allow a peace deal where Ukraine gets substatial security guarantees.

So any idea that Zelenskyy can simply create peace without signing a death sentence for an independent Ukraine, is silly. The best they can hope for without security guarantees is becoming a new Belarus. And in that case, Moldova is next in line.

Again, I know it, you know it.

Yeah. I was going to say you couldn't pay me enough.

But for my family or my whole country... I'll do whatever.

It doesn’t even work though. People come and grovel and then he screws them over anyway. He’s a bully. If you grovel, he recognizes that he can bully you and he will never stop.

There's ways to do that that preserves some dignity for your people. This is simply pathetic.

What dignity do the Venezuelans have left? I mean that with regards to the absolute trainwreck the Chavista regime has been on the entire hemisphere for decades. Their GDP has contracted by 90% from 2012 when Huge Chavez was elected. The fraction of people who have fled the country is a number that can be used to school elementary school kids. The regime has murdered tens of thousands of people, not including the literal paramilitary terrorists that the government funds to kill brutalize their own population. Their entire nation is both blight and laughingstock.

"Oh Machado didn't suck up to Trump in a way that preserves the dignity for her people, how pathetic."

Man fuck off. Passing judgement on literal refugees on their dignity just because their leader is groveling to Trump.

You know what's more undignified than sucking up to Trump? Dying in a ditch because a collectivo thought he saw an anti-maduro meme on your photo and he dragged you out on the street and shot you. Then having your family sent to a political prison where they're having Got knows what done to them. Then your son flees your country and works minimal wage labor jobs in Uruguay to make enough money to send back home so your grandmother can afford to buy medication and not eat the family dog.

I guess I agree to disagree on this issue. To me the value of dignity is simply nothing compared to a single life, let alone thousands. But I understand there are many who think differently.

I actually don’t see it as groveling. It’s more akin to a parent buying their screeching toddler a bag of Skittles because he won’t shut the fuck up in the middle of a grocery store or, in this instance, a geopolitical crisis. “You want the fucking medal? Here, take it. Now stop whining and behave.”

I am sure you have never had friends and family been killed or send to a torture chamber in the last 20 years.

She is being pragmatic for the big goal of bringing freedom to Venezuela.

How many people actually like unironically support Trump?

Like I get the vibe it's more "I knew he was bad, I still know he's bad, I just like that he's worse for liberals"

How many people actually like unironically support Trump?

    A good portion of Americans.

Yeah, it's so easy to think "oh they just think this is all a joke" or "they're only sucking up to him to get something they want" or whatever, but the most straightforward conclusion we can draw from the events of the past ten years is that at least 30% of American voters genuinely love Donald Trump.

It's a tough pill to swallow because it says an awful lot about that 30%, but it's pretty undeniable at this point.

I mean, you’d do it for a bil. You’d have to, if only to turn around and fund his opposition

  • What's the cost of a medal or even a title if it means you can remove a tyrannical system of government and bring back Democracy to your country? Real world leaders like Zelenskyy and Machado understand this. Remind yourself the disgust you feel here is for Trump.

Yeah if it works, great play on her part and a good indication that she’s a worthy leader.

Now compare this to the absolute melon that could be bribed by accepting her Nobel…

What's the cost of a medal or even a title if it means you can remove a tyrannical system of government and bring back Democracy to your country?

That's not the trade-off here. Is Trump offering removing the Chavist government in exchange for the prize? No. She's offering the prize just to meet with him.

The best case outcome from this meeting is a verbal promise from Trump that he'll do something in her favor. And we all know what a promise from Trump is worth.

The most likely outcome is public humiliation. A medal in exchange for nothing. A vague repeat of the already vague statements the Trump admin has made about Venezuela having elections at some undefined point in the future.

And let's be clear about what this means for Machado: Even if by some miracle she ascends to the leadership of Venezuela after this, the people will rightly see her as someone who grovels to Trump. There will be questions of whether or not her win in the election was legitimate, as well. There will be an expectation from the Trump admin that she continue to submit to his will. Giving up the prize will be used against her by Trump as an extremely effective propaganda tool ("she's so weak, she just gave it to me; she was begging me to help her career, she can't do anything without me") if she ever publicly disagrees with anything he does.

Not to mention the expectation this sets for other world leaders.

    Monumental miscalculation labelled as realpolitik.

I fully disagree. The US still holds a considerable amount of sway in spite of Trump. If she can be seen as a leader who can hold sway with an American president, even Trump, and can hold that sway with future presidents (hopefully not Trump) it will add to her legitimacy. She's already been humiliated and exiled from Venezuela so I don't give much thought to your line of reasoning saying this will call into question her election legitimacy.

If this was a country that already held political power on a global scale it would be different, sure. But we're talking about Venezuela who had a massive fall from grace and regressed to a developing nation.

Maybe they'll give her another one in 2026 for doing it to bring liberty to vzla lol

  • A frequently expressed sentiment: "Ugh why does this foreign leader flatter Trump? I hate her exactly as much as a domestic political figure who flatters Trump!"

The direct equivalent: "Ugh why does this foreign prince flatter the king? I hate him exactly as much as the local noblemen who flatter the king!"

The US government today functions exactly like a medieval court, and world leaders have had to adjust accordingly. If flattering Trump has a chance of bringing freedom and democracy to Venezuela, it's well worth it to try.

  • Nobel Prize = Bearer Bonds 😉

  • Is he gunna scratch her name out and write his name below with a sharpie?

  • Honestly how popular is MCM? Cause I don't think most people would like or respect her after this level of groveling. Like don't her supporters want her to maintain some dignity/independence rather than this level of subservience.

  • This humiliation ritual is on a whole new level

  • Can the Nobel prize people signal they will give Trump the peace prize if he just calls off ICE?

  • Leonardo DiCaprio could give Trump his Oscar, it doesn't mean it belongs to him 🙄

  • Can't wait to see the fights on wikipedia if she does give him her prize

  • The Lincoln Project has to make an ad out of this

  • Does this man not understand how history will view this??

  • He’s probably already asked the military to make plans for abducting the prize from her house at the middle of the night

  • TikTok AI slop could never.

  • Bruh what a child. I mean even if you like him politically, this is just so fricking embarrassing. First he invented a whole new fifa peace price and put it on himself (literally) and the baby's still not done.

  • This is insane

  • Participation Noble Peace Prize

Absolutely shameful comment. What happened to this subreddit, was it always this bad?

She got downvoted into oblivion so I wouldn't blame the sub.

Fair. I probably have rose colored glasses for the long long ago when we just discussed economics papers, transit policy, and worms.

    Disgusting comment.

    What did they say?

A crude sexual comment about Machado and Trump.
