And thus if any country, like Iran, Japan, Ukraine or Taiwan, wants to be safe they should develop nuclear weapons.
I see this constantly repeated as fact, yet in just the last year we've seen war between 4 of the 9 nuclear armed states. Israel was invaded in 2023 and had tens of thousands of missiles rains down on it over the last 2 years. Russia was (counter) invaded by Ukraine and has had massive drone attacks across its entire country for the last few years. India and Pakistan had a short but meaningful skirmish across their border.
I just don't see how this belief holds up in any way. None of these countries was able to use their nukes to defend themselves.
On the other hand, what I do see as being very helpful in defending a country from foreign intervention is a robust oil industry. The main fear stopping wider US action in both Iran and Venezuela (as well as what's stopping Israel from going after Qatar) is the effect it would have on global oil prices. Oil is the reason we defend Saudi, Qatar, and the UAE. It's part of the reason why we liberated Kuwait. Its why Russia can keep its economy afloat amid the most restrictive sanctions regime in world history.

I saw a diagram on what percentage of consumption is done by the top 10% and the bottom 80%, and the point of the whole thing was this rather concerning divergence with a massive K as people have described. The thing I wonder is, what are the consumption of goods per group in inflation adjusted dollars rather than percentage, because if consumption goes up for both, even accounting for inflation, than it would seem that this k is nothing to be concerned about; some would be doing much better off, but all would be better off nonetheless.
