Hey guys, I really need some help. My mother is being very stubborn and not listening to us. We understand that she has bipolar disorder, and we truly care about her. But right now, she wants to do something that could harm her, and she’s not listening to anyone. Please tell me how I can make her understand.

  • You can't. She needs to get on meds before she harms herself. If that is what she is about to do you may need to call emergency services. This is coming from someone with bipolar.

She is on meds and we are giving her each day but still right now she is not much listing anyone

Then her meds may need adjustment. I'm sorry you're going through this.

Okay i talk with doc and change thanks now i know what to do

  • Unfortunately OP., you probably can't. If she is on the verge of harming herself or someone else, you need to get in touch with the police to say she may need to be protected from herself or wherever you are, if you have a mental health service on call.

  • If she's in a manic episode (I'm guessing) she can't make any rational decisions and you won't be able to change her mind. You need to call emergency services.

  • That’s the problem. There’s no way to make anyone:

    1. Understand your perspective
    2. Act on it

If you’re very concerned, perhaps there’s an intervention. Do you have access to her care team

Some places have emergency teams affiliated with first responders. Police typically have HORRIBLE responses to a mental health crisis.

    Them’s your options.

    Unfortunately

  • She is not in a mental state where she is able to listen to reason.

You need to call police (or some other local service) and let them know she's exhibiting concerning mental health symptoms and you'd like an emergency mental health team to come assess her because she may be a danger to herself.

  • A really common thing with bipolar is not believing you have it and/or that you should stop taking your medication. I think you need to evaluate what you can and can't control about world and other people. You can't make her believe she is ill. You cannot make her believe she has to take medication. You can, however, set a boundary about what happens WITH YOU when this occurs. Hardest lesson to learn, but don't worry, life will keep throwing the test at you over and over again until you learn it.

  • Check to see if your county has “crisis intervention”. If so, call them now.

  • How old is she ? we have recently. been informed about a few “stars” with early onset dementia. One of the things ppl will not respond to is being told by family what to do - they know Sometimg is not rite but they’ve lost ability to de do critical thinking. You could what doc thin k s , defines a doc visit

  • One can't make other adults do anything, unless court orders or commitment/guardianship is involved. You can express concern. You can give advice. That's about it. If she is considered legally competent she gets to decide for herself and there isn't much anybody can do about it. Except maybe filing court papers and trying to be her guardian, if you go that route. She could maybe placed under your guardianship or made under the court's jurisdiction and she would have to comply with psychiatric treatment. Otherwise, if she is considered legally competent there is nothing you can do. You can express concern and that's it.
