Hey people!
Your friendly neighborhood moderator here.
This'll be a short announcemnet, so no excuses to not read it.
But posting domestic cats (Felis Familiaris Felis Catus), and them killing things is not welcome here.
In the past, it resulted in an immediate, and permanent, ban. since the announcement was removed, haven't been enforcing that policy since, well, can't expect someone to follow something that doesn't exist in a way that you can see it.
But it's back, from the time this is posted, you post a cat, you're getting banned.
Rule 1 is extremely clear on that those kinds of posts are not allowed, and it's not our fault if you can't, or won't, read the rules.
Keep being metal.
For the people asking why, it's because cats are the most destructive invasive species on the planet, directly attributing to the extinction of over 60 species of small animals and counting. Letting your pet cat out to help those numbers is not nature nor metal, it's irresponsible and sad.
2nd most deadly. I’m confident that we’re the most deadly invasive species.
No source required. We've wiped entire continents of various mega fauna.
I get where you're coming from, and there’s no denying humans have had a massive impact on ecosystems. But studies, like those in Nature Communications, suggest that the extinction of megafauna was more complex—a mix of rapid climate shifts and human activity. It seems like it wasn’t just hunting alone but environmental pressures and habitat changes that played a more significant role too.
Our species overhunted them at the worst time possible, the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary. the megafauna were already stressed by climate change, and they already had enough problems when humans drove them to extinction
Nah, those rhinos and elephants had it coming.
/s…obviously
To be fair the cat body count is kinda on us as well.
Sort of, the European wildcat which is just a domestic cat that doesn’t live indoors has been in Europe for approx 1million years, we’re not responsible for those ones.
I thought it was mosquitoes.
I believe that's human deaths.
Truthismetal
I'm afraid you aren't allowed to make intelligent posts like that on reddit. It's against the law for people to do research on how to keep cats safely happy and healthy.
/s
You mean besides us?
Damn! Would love to see the stats on this to share to people who think letting their cats outdoors is harmless.
Here's an easier-to-read article that also links some more scientific papers for ya

It's called the food chain
Thank you! All I could find was stuff about Australia.
[deleted]
I wonder where all those kittens came from....
[deleted]
Whataboutism certainly doesn't.
[deleted]
Are you out hunting feral cats with a crossbow?
[deleted]
I mean, how is your skin in the game, so to speak?
These stats are all over the Internet, just Google it
This is exactly how we got antivaxxers.
Yeah, bc I told them to find a TikTok acct. and believe that. How is having someone else do the research for you any more reliable?? If you’re not smart enough to use a search engine to find reputable sources for your information and just willingly believe whatever you’re told, how is some stranger on REDDIT looking it up for you going to ensure that you are given credible sources?! Lol!
Surprisingly rats have caused even more damage than cats in regards to being invasive species.
Yeah rats are pretty nuts too. I recently learned that Alberta has managed to contain them outside their borders somehow.
I honestly thought someone was pulling my chain the first time i heard about it, but nope. They have freezing cold to the north and a fortified border to the south and a hotline to report any sightings. Absolute madlads. I heard of false sightings of muskrats and shit because the locals don't even know what a common rat looks like.
In that case, maybe an exception should be made for images of cats killing rats?
seems a bit arbitrary, but ok
this is one of the craziest TIL ever
I'd argue that we're -as a species -the ones at fault. They're just doing like us: living and insuring the survival [of their species]. Difference being, we blame them for their introduction to sensitive habitats and ecosystems. Then, we go on a mass campaign again for yet another human blunder of global proportions and they and the animals affected suffer for it.
We are the true problem. And I wonder if this kind of rule should apply to any and all invasive species which are often from pet trades ie ball python making kills, how about dogs, or cane toads, so forth. Not trying to be flippant with this last point. Just occurred to me.
I never said we weren't at fault. The difference between cats and other invasives is that we as humans created cats like we did dogs. They are a genetically distinct species found nowhere in the wild, and we still to this day spread them around and encourage their destructive activities. Everyone knows the Burmese python (not ball pythons, those are not invasive anywhere) situation is bad and we actively try to stop them, but they are also still part of nature, not a domesticated species bred to kill for sport.
It solves nothing to just complain about who caused the disaster. We still have to actually clean up the oil spill.
I'm guessing you're American.
Cats can't be an invasive species everywhere because then they wouldn't exist in the first place.
Tf does nationality have to do with this? It's just biology/ecology. Domestic cats Felis catus are descendants of African wildcats Felis lybica, made by evolving alongside human settlements. Because they are a product of domestication, they technically have no native range just like all other domesticated species, and are therefore invasive in all locations where they can interact with native wildlife. The only place you could reasonably argue them being native to is Africa near human settlements, since the native wildlife there is already familiar and prepared to handle small cats.
P.s. it was recently found that cats are more recently domesticated than thought:
BBC News - Cats became our companions way later than you think https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cq8dvdp9gn7o
Far too recent for species to diverge.
Arrogance combined with ignorance, but more importantly geographic relevance.
I'm pretty sure there was a marketing campaign in the US to convince you not to let cats outside. Just like your history books justify using nuclear weapons. What you're saying might be true for your region, but you absolutely cannot apply it globally.
The existence of the European wildcat is enough to nullify your other points. And the existence of the European wildcat and them being forced out by humans is why we should let them out here. We need cats to control our rodent populations.
This is not an America-only problem. Actually Australia and New Zealand probably have some of the worst of it. Wikipedia's got a nice summary of the most heavily impacted locations around the world, or you could quite easily find specifics through the linked sources or a simple google search of your own. I don't wanna keep reddit arguing tho, so have a nice day.
Never said it was, but it doesn't apply to me in the same way it does to you.
You should probably learn not to abuse the downvote button.
This is laughable false. Humans are for more of an invasive species and have infiltrated every continent on earth. Humans have had catastrophic effects on the entire globe and are directly responsible for the extinction of an estimated 869 species.
Cats are one of those things we’re responsible for…
but that's nature and it's metal... but ok ig.
Please, let's go back to komodo dragons eating calves still in the cow's stomach.
The most metal video I've ever seen. Absolute brutality.
Link?
Spawn kill
I've always been a circle of life kinda guy. But GAWD DAYUM! I figured shock woulda put the poor gal out of her misery. But she felt every second of that!
link works but the video is dead :<
No it’s not, but by Christ I wish it was
Imagine sitting there while a Komodo dragon rips your unborn from your belly, eats it in 3 gulps then proceeds to tear chunks out of you
Poor thing probably sitting wondering why it didn’t have the good fortune of dying as it was being steadily consumed alive
Now that is fucking METAL
I think I’m gonna leave that link blue :(
You chose…. WISELY
Weird on my side it appears as a black screen with white letters "this video isn't available anymore"
Fortunately or unfortunately google-ing the content gives you as a first option a youtube video which I guess is the same, it was brutal.
Weird because it's dead for me too.
Maybe will have to use a VPN...
That is weird!
I don’t know, the one with a lioness ripping a live buffalo’s nuts off still haunts me.
But the buffalo could still live after that, right? I don’t think it’s really the same.
Yea yea, bring THAT shit back.
Not that dude with a "sunburn" on his arm.
Is this to prevent encouraging them to kill things for likes?
That and this is a nature appreciation subreddit.
It's always been this way, but fact is, people don't read the rules, or think that "Well I'm special and the rules don't apply to me."
Can we also get a bit of a crackdown on the animal remains posts, especially if it is nothing more than a half decayed corpses that could just as well be on the side of the road!
Then downvote those posts.
That's one of those subjective things that we for the most part let the community deal with.
Unless it's something just utterly asinine
Are you kidding us? Do you know I could post almost anything here, as long as it is cute, funny, or mildly interesting, it gets more upvotes then downvotes. Proven time and time again. Look at /r/HuskyTantrums. You can find plenty of posts w/o any fucking huskies upvoted to the top, and about the equal amount of posts w/o any tantrums at all. And this is not limited to that community only. I visit regularly not that many subreddits, but I had to drop a bunch still because they lately started to get flooded with low effort/low key trash submissions and it's become clear no adequate moderation takes place. Moderation is key to quality content. People want karma, they post anything vaguely fitting. Users are oblivious. It tingles their fancy, they upvote, rules be damned. See where this goes? And the remains posts are low effort for the most part. I can probably find enough pictures just by walking around my neighborhood to fill the front page today.
Do you remember the turtle on the table with a wasp on it post? It's such a shame and utter blow to the rules that it still not taken down as a blatant violation of them. Do you remember how that shithead OP claimed he looked high and low at the sidebar and couldn't spot any rules his submission breaks? Why do you think the community handles it better than you ever could? I'm completely baffled at your responses, sorry, this stance is just beyond me. Please don't take this as offense but why even have moderators then?
If you see something that breaks the rules, report it, it's not up to you whether or not it gets removed or not. And from the looks of things, it's a good thing too.
But the point is that reports do not work? You said yourself already several times you let upvotes decide whether something stays. Honestly, why have rules with such a hands off approach? And do not let my ongoing frustration with the state of the things fool you.
Please be transparent with us. If you do not wish to deal with whether remains are metal or not why not just remove the rule then? At least it would be honest, and I could just bid farewell because seeing them honestly gets old really quick. Why have this weird stance of "remains are not allowed, unless the upvotes say so, but we won't explain this unless you ask us directly"? Then, if you do not remove posts with human involvement then again, amend the rules to allow them. The point is, you DO have a problem with bad content and reports in this community are dysfunctional, bad content stays in violation of the rules. So I do not get to decide what content stays. You do not get to decide what content stays. The community decides that according to you, but the community disregards the rules. Why not reconcile this, finally? Change the rules, change the moderation policy, change the community. Do something, that's all.
Please read my previous response for the answer to this reply.
Are we going full circle? If not what post do you refer to?
What's happening is I'm saying that none of what you say changes what I've said.
Please go read it.
I still don't get why cats are singled out. There are a lot of invasive species. Are the mods huge cat lovers or something?
They're singled out as they're what gets posted most often.
How many posts have you seen of a dog tearing a squirrel apart in this sub after all
“Appreciation” is a funny way of putting watching animal foetus is being ripped out
If we, humans, didn't develop enough to be able to establish rules and communicate with each other, that's also how we'd behave.
There's a clear difference between the natural interactions of animals in the wild and we letting our pets go out and fuck nature when they weren't even supposed to be there.
Keep your cats at home and your dogs on a leash. Don't promote your cats bringing dead birds to you as "look! They brought me a present". There's enough kibble being produced to feed house cats.
Humans still and continue to act like this you don’t think animals communicate and have unspoken rules? lol
I still don’t understand the appreciation of watching something gutted alive though
Oh dear god, I do anti animal abuse content... Is this going to open a new chapter of trauma for me?
Hi, quick question. What if I actually AM special. Do the rules apply to me still? Thanks!
The taxonomic name for the domestic cat is Felis catus...
Why the hell are you getting downvoted, you're right.
No idea why I thought it was felis familiaris
The taxonomic name for the domestic dog is Canis lupis familiaris, so for those not intimate with nomenclature, it can be easy to assume other domesticated animals may share names!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Cats belong INSIDE!
When i look at the rules, rule 1 is a prohibition against Human Involvement.
That's not a criticism, just noting that Reddit is confusing to navigate at times (ie I went looking for the rule and didn't find it where I expected to).
That's not rule one at all
it's a known new vs old reddit problem where updating rules doesn't always sync properly on both versions of the site
new reddit says:
but old reddit shows:
which is still a rule that shows up on new reddit, just as rule 4.. so people are definitely still trash at reading rules lol
Oh, cool. Thanks for the explanation.
It sure seems contradictory. How would you like me to show it to you?
Is it okay if the cat is the one being killed by another wild animal?
Generally yes, but more often than not that's gonna end up being a case of baiting and such, which is worse
I would like to know this too. there are also plenty of videos/pics on here of tigers and other big cats killing cattle and other domestic animals.
Oooh, that is actually a very good question. /u/viperfan7 ? Got any clarification on this case?
Never thought I'd say this but Thank you reddit mod. Chad move.
:3
Real quick. The species name for domestic cats is Felis catus. Seems like you may have (very understandably) mixed up with domestic dogs (Canis lupis familiaris).
But yes, big agree and thank you for pointing this out. Cats are a big problem for local wildlife and should not be let outside without a leash.
Yeahhhhhhh, someone else mentioned that.
Already corrected, I'm just not one to hide my mistakes and make people who are correcting things look like an ass.
Especially when they're right.
THANK YOU for this! While domestic cats have the natural instinct to hunt, it’s very destructive to native wildlife. I much rather see a native hawk take down a native rat than your cat kill a mouse that it caught outside.
Please keep your cat indoors as it’s much safer for the environment AND your cat!
i understand the idea but what do i do if my cat gets really sad when he can't go outside? it doesn't feel fair to keep him locked up like that...

(fyi for some like me it's instead rule 4, idk why, can't post a pic here)
Someone posted why, it's because the new reddit rules list is kind of copy and pasted from /r/NatureIsFuckingLit
I could have sworn I fixed that ages ago though, so meh, I'll fix it later, since the rule exists there too, just, like you said, rule 4
ahh I understand, thanks for answering
Yeah, it's essentially human error.
But also, blame reddit for trying to force shitty new reddit on people
As long as we get to see the baby monkey holding on to its dead mom while in the jaws of a lioness weekly I’ll be fine.
Isn't it a leopard?
Take my upvote. Leopard.
And keep your cats fucking inside.
Dogs too man. Can’t forget about them puppers
You're not wrong, but it's nowhere near as prevalent
Buuuut mah cat iz coot
/r/eyebleach
Also, PAY THE TAX!

Drives me crazy that everyone in the UK believes it's fine to just let their cats out to do whatever they like all day and night. Same in Spain. No wonder the UK has the worst biodiversity in the world.
More like r/natureisblues. Buh dum tis
May I ask what's the rule on non-domesticated but tame animals (falconry, for the most part)? I've reported these in the past but I don't think any were removed.
Pretty much if they're not exhibiting natural behavior (Like something being forced to do something, falconry is kind of in between things, since on one hand, for the most part it is their natural behaviour, hell sometimes falconry falcons are just kept temporarily and released after a while, it's really a judgment call) then don't post it.
Honestly it's usually "don't post it" but falconry is kind of a special case
Ok
What about cats getting killed by native wildlife? Is that allowed?
Hello, thank you for clarifying this rule and I would like to take this opportunity to ask, in case I keep up to date with these, can content related to illustration and graphic design focused on fauna be uploaded to this community?
I will keep being metal. Thanks.
based
another W for the dog lovers
/s
What a pussy ass rule lmao
Well, seeing as you don't want to follow the rules, have a ban
Or the snake protruding from the in flight bird.
Or the frogs mouth! 😁
yes, but still, tell the other mods to not delete my post i do not see a age account limit
You can read, go read the removal comment.
i know it is already removed but why
See the previous comment
Are fire ants, European starlings and common rabbits a cause for ban too?
Well I'm not against cats following their natural hunting instincts and I think that rule is gay so I'm just leaving this sub.
You won't be missed
So if a cat is doing something metal you can’t post it at all? I don’t think I saw the posts you’re talking about so I’m just wondering why cats are banned as a whole
Edit: dunno why the downvotes. If I am walking around the neighborhood and a cat does something metal. That’s metal. I wasn’t involved. Plus the rule 1 that I am seeing says nothing of this
It has ALWAYS been that way..
Again, rule 1 is quite clear about it.
Just there's been more and more posts that break rule 1, especially involving domesticated cats, so it seems like it's time to revive this policy.
edit:
Why are people getting downvoted for questions, seriously people, it's a valid question, they're just asking for clarification, nothing wrong with that
So feral cats are alright? If a cats wild and has to do metal shit to survive..
No
May want to edit the post then
What is there to edit?
Feral cats are still domestic cats, just because they're out in the wild doesn't change that they are Felis Catus
Feral and domestic are different things. I understand they're the same species but one is a wild animal and one isn't. Might save you a headache to specify both feral and domestic that's all
No, they're not, a domesticated animal can be feral, but that does not change that it is domesticated.
Domestication is a process that creates what is essentially a new species.
tl;dr; the domestic cat would not exist without humans.
Dude, yes they are different things. Feral cats stay away from humans and don't rely on them.
Domestication does not create a new species it's just the process of taming an animal. It's not hard just to make a quick edit specifying neither are allowed feral or domestic.
No.
They are not.
They are both Felis Catus. The domesticated cat.
What then of species of actual wild cats that look like domestic cats at a glance, eg. the Pallas? Does one risk a permaban posting any small cat species?
Those are different species
So you mean an undomesticated species of cat?
I outright specified the species in the post, you know that right?
The sub is also nature oriented. If the cat was in its natural habitat (in nature, nature is metal) and doing something metal it would be allowed. Cats are domesticated animals and don't have a natural habitat.
At least that is my interpretation of the rule.
Incorrect. My cat's native environment is either underfoot or on my lap.
What about domestic dogs kills killing domestic cats? Is that acceptable?
Edit: nvm just read the rules. No domestic animals what so ever
