I hit the gym 5-6 days a week, hit weights pretty hard with supersets (in the mame of time), and i do cardio for 45 min after each session for calorie burn, and overall heart health. When I workout and have a serious pump, its gone after cardio.. Is this inhibiting my recovery/gains by doing this? I'm not trying to be a pro bodybuilder, but I am wanting to be overall healthier and a lot bigger. 6'5 ; 295lbs.

  • The pump disappears regardless of whether you do cardio or not. It has nothing to do with recovery. So no, it doesn't inhibit anything.

I know it was a dumb question, just wasnt sure if it was inhibiting gains in any way. I appreciate you.

There are no dumb questions, we all learn one way or another :)

As long as u eat enough ur chilling

  • Pump is the temporary swelling and tightness of muscles during/after intense exercise, caused by increased blood flow ,pump is just that ,a good pump is not correlated to have better gains

I appreciate you thank you. I know it was a dumb question but trying to be most effective.

  • Ur good mate. If you want to get real theoretical about it then there are a couple of reasons why cardio isn't absolutely optimal after lifting. In practice though it makes next to no difference to all but elite lifters (and the importance of cardio/calorie burning for a big boi like you eclipses anything else)

  • Not at all. It will not affect your recovery or gains. A good pump doesn’t mean good muscle growth. A pump is temporary; it happens when the muscles tighten and blood flow increases.

    Thanks, man

  • Time out. You want to be bigger than 295 pounds? I think you mean you want to gain muscle and lose fat. Hearts don't last as long when people weigh more than 295 pounds. It sounds to me like you have an amazing workout routine. The pump will return after you finish cardio. Keep up the good work.

HAHAHA sorry man, I'm 295 and not bulky/toned. I'm a big boned guy and do have some fat to lose. I dont see myself as that big honestly.... maybe I have body dysmorohic disorder - others tell me i'm big'...but that can mean something different for everyone. However, I do want to keep the cardio going at 45 min per workout. I hate it...but I feel like it helps overall cardio health, i just want tone and bulk too. I appreciate you, btother

  • I understand cardio (zone 2), works when you lactate is low.

After lifting, it is usually not low.

    I do separate sessions.

Thanks man. I have a certain amount I can get it done in...so trying to do both. I appreciate your help.

You are welcome. I am not an expert, but there is plenty of information on the internet about the topic.

Be careful with the bad advice on Reddit.

I look online and there are arguments about both. Same here hahaha, but i do appreciate your input.

Don’t worry about what’s scientifically optimal

    1. Your lactate clears very quickly? 2. Have you checked a lactate level after resistance work to show it's elevated?
  • No, not at all. You don't need a pump to make gains. Just make sure to eat back the calories you burned during cardio (won't be many anyway)

    Great advice thank you!!!

  • What’s your preferred cardio method?

I prefer cross trainer elliptical so its easier on my joints

  • It would be better to wait and do cardio later in the day.

Unfortunately I dont have the time; this is what i've got to work with.for now

  • Cardio absolutely inhibits muscle growth when done close to weight training (but this also depends on the type of cardiovascular activity - running will have more of an inhibiting effect vs the stairmaster, for example). But you losing your pump after cardio is not really a cause or effect of cardio, it's just your pump going away

Cardio after weight training is better than cardio before weight training, so you're good there

Still, if you're not competing, but even if you are, the amount of impedance that cardio makes on your muscle growth is probably negligible, especially when compared to how important your heart health is

Also, just me being curious, what do you do for cardio? Running on the treadmill?
