NASA APOD has not been up for several days. Is it being updated or shut down? I have visited this site every day for at least 20 years. I sure do miss viewing the images! I hope is just down temporarily!
ETA: Possible ISP issue. Works fine on iPad set to cellular only.
ETA 2: Up and running now! Thanks NASA!
The following was posted a short time ago on the APOD Discord:
I confirmed that I'm now able to access the site from systems that previously were unable to do so, and I wish I'd thought to check that Discord earlier.
Here's a link to the Discord for anyone who wants to join.
And while I'm at it, here's a link to our own r/nasa Discord server.
I had the same question today. It was up during the shutdown, just obviously not being updated, so I hope its not been done away with...
edit: My boss said that APOD was ran through Goddard library, which is now closed, so perhaps that's why the site is inaccessible, or at least hard to load, now.
This poster on an APOD discussion forum says this:

Since for some reason I'm able to access the site, here's today's image.
I'd be curious to know if anyone who can't access the main part of the site is able to get to the image directly with this link: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/2601/RedRectangle_HubbleSchmidt_1080.jpg
Got it with your link.
There have been internal network issues with several sites impacted. Things should come back online soon.
hi I would like to inquire about this. I built a small project for a friend using the APOD API. While the site is back up the API is still unresponsive do you have any information on when it may be working again?
It's working for me.
It’s not loading for me at the moment. However, APOD Facebook page links to the latest update on January 5, so it may just be the site is down temporarily
I was just creating my side project website of cosmic gallery and was almost done then next day api is down :(
Does the api still work for you? The api page won't load for me right now
It's down for everyone right now
The issue isn’t fixed on my end yet. I’m using the APOD API, and it’s still returning a 504 error. Is anyone else seeing the same issue today?
Working well for me.
Same here :( APOD still returns 50X
www.isitdownrightnow.com to check any website.
It's working for me as well. When you go to https://apod.nasa.gov/ and you say it's "not up", what exactly do you see on your screen? Are you able to get to the main nasa.gov site? Anything else not working?
is it loading for you, because it hasn't loaded for me in days...doesn't even throw a 404 or anything
I just did a little testing and it seems like there might indeed be an issue. Although I can access it from my home ISP connection, if I try from a couple of other systems that I can connect to I am unable to reach the site. Even more interesting is that if I try to connect to some of the links on the page (when I can connect), that appears to be going through Cloudflare (which is something that helps distribute traffic on busy websites) that actually fails, which is generally A Bad Thing.
I'm going to reach out to the folks at u/nasa directly and see if they can help.
Sorry, meant to reply to you directly but reply accidentally posted in main responses.eta: head up and locked :-( I did reply to your first comment.I did try Cloudflare DNS on my router with no joy.
www.isitdownrightnow.com shows it as having been down for ~3 days and 17 hours. As u/bofis said, it doesn't load at all for me, and then Firefox times out with the typical message:
The connection has timed out
The server at apod.nasa.gov is taking too long to respond.
Chrome and Edge respond similarly, so it's not browser-specific. u/dkozinn, perhaps your timeout is set to a larger value?
Our most recent posts overlapped; I can confirm that I can see issues as well and I've reached out to my contacts at NASA.
Today's (January5, 2026) looks like the Mothman.
Browsers showed site as unreachable. NASA site worked fine.
TLDR: Possibly an ISP issue!
Tried link OldDiehl suggested; shows site as down for everyone
Did a deep dive:
Changed router DNS several times; no joy
Used ISP DNS; no joy
Tried 3 different browsers; no joy
Tried iPad Wi-Fi only; no joy
Tried iPad using built in cellular only; Worked fine!
