Have a son Jack and want to name incoming daughter Rose.
Has it been long enough that people won't think of the titanic immediately?
I don't want to name my kids after that intentionally, I just like the names but if people's first thought will be the titanic lovers then Ill scratch it and try again.
Unfortunately, yes, people will think of Titanic.
Yup. It would certainly be my first thought.
Ngl I thought of Titanic immediately. I don't think it will ever not be strongly connected to Titanic, it's such a classic film
I think it's too iconic and since they're romantic interests I personally wouldn't do it. What about a longer version of Rose like Rosalie or Rosemary?
Likely to get nicknamed Rose though which puts them back in the same situation socially.
They could go with Primrose and the more likely nickname will be Prim. Of course we don't know the future but it's an option.
Eh being prim is not generally considered a good thing, saddling someone with that for her whole life is possibly worse than a lovers association that only applies when she's with her brother!
I went through college using the nickname Prim and it was perfectly fine!
It has not been long enough, I'm sorry. It's a classic at this point and the characters are iconic.
(And I say this as a lover of the film... it doesn't help that they call each other Jack and Rose like 5,000 times each.)
I’ve seriously thought about tallying how many times they say each other’s names, it’s such an absurd amount.
I counted how much she said Jack in it once it was something ridiculously close to 1000
Ironically I was just watching this last night and I always think of how much she says “Jack”. No one talks like that rose!
"Jack! No. Jack! Jack? Jack! No, Jack!" - Titanic
Jack! No Jack! Jack I couldn’t possibly Jack!
Modern equivalent of naming siblings Romeo & Juliet
Way too iconic. Titanic was culturally massive.
i’ve never even seen titanic and that was my first thought
you're missing out on an incredible film!
Same
Unfortunately that’s my immediate association, and I’ve only seen the movie maybe twice — it’s just so iconic that the association is still strong IMO. If Rose is by far your favourite name, you could still use it, but I personally wouldn’t.
It’s like Scarlett and Rhett at this point.
I was going to comment the same thing. Too iconic in pop culture.
Who???
From Gone with the Wind
Is Clark and Lois too Supermany?
Yes 😕 sorry
I do immediately think of Titanic. It's not the worst, but I don't think I'd personally do it.
I haven’t even watched Titanic before (I’m sorry, I’m sure it’s good, but I already have a huge fear of boats and oceans 😂), and it’s what first came to my mind.
I would immediately think of Titanic, despite having seen the movie exactly one time and it not really leaving a strong impression on me. It was a cultural phenomenon and Jack & Rose are one of the most significant couples in film history.
Often with these questions, my answer is that while names may have a strong association with something right now, it probably won't matter because these associations fade with time, and the child's generation won't have the same familiarity with it. However, in this case, I think it's one that will stand the test of time. The film came out in 1997, which is 28 years ago, and it's still peoples' first thought. It's a pretty iconic film. I think though, that if you made a slight variation and named her Rosalie, for example, the association is much less of a thing and would be fine. You could try Rosemary, Rosita, Rosamund, Rosetta, Roseanna, Roseanne, Rosina, Rosalia etc.
Yes I thought of that as soon as I read the title without even knowing which sub I was looking at, thinking it would be a film discussion
There's a couple named Jack and Rose in the 90's Austrialian show "Heartbreak High". I did think about Titanic the whole time
In my public speaking course I sat next to a Jack in class and many joked about us in good fun. I do think Jack and Rose pair well when looking outside the movie, unfortunately it is just such an iconic film it’s hard to think about them together in any other capacity. Maybe Rose as a middle name?
That would be my first thought
I had to avoid Anastasia and Dmitri because of that association in my own brain, let alone anyone else's.
Even if nobody else thinks Titanic, you will.
I met a guy who named his dogs Anastasia and Dmitri. Names of movie couples should be relegated to dogs and cats.
Yeah I thought of it immediately sorry
I have a family member with a Jack and a Rose. It briefly occurred to me about the titanic commonality but not a big deal.
Definitely a risk. They're both pretty common names so I'm not sure it would be my first thought, but it is an iconic movie and giving siblings the names of famous lovers is just such an unfortunate vibe. If equally well-known characters with such common names had any other kind of relationship I think it'd be OK. I'd look for a different name.
Yes
I just want you to know that I came across this post while watching titanic, right after the iceberg hits. Lol.
i haven’t even seen the movie and it’s what i thought of first
I know someone with kids jack and Kate and it made me double take first time I saw it
titanic will be one of those movies that sticks around forever. people are always going to think of it
This reminds me of a tv show when someone named their twins Anna and Elsa and kept having to tell people it wasn’t after Frozen
Yeah. I haven't seen Titanic since I was twelve (my best friend forced me to watch all 3 hours) and that's what I would think of. Maybe another similar name? It's a really iconic film and lots of people would think about that first (not just adults, I'm a teenager and immediately thought "Oh like Titanic?")
Jack and rose are like Romeo and Juliette. I don’t think there will ever not be an association.
There’s a very tasty cocktail named the Jack Rose made with equal parts apple brandy, grenadine and lime juice. That was what I thought of first.
Other children in your kids' generation probably won't have the titanic association, but their teachers, other parents and adults they meet likely will.
I've never even actually watched the movie and that's still my first association because of pop culture.
Yes. I immediately think Titanic. Maybe use Rose as a middle name.
I also have a Jack and sadly took Rose even off our middle names list lol I am a huge titanic nerd though (like books and other media besides the movie) so I think everyone that knows me would especially make the association lol
To me, yes. I'd find something else.
Separately they are fine, but I think as a sibset it's a little weird.
You could do (Jack/middle name/last name) and First name/Rose/last name). Or opposite.
Yes, that's immediately where my mind goes with those names. They're great as standalone names, but together they give off "Titanic" vibes.
Yep
I wouldn't do it. Jack and Rose will forever be Titanic. Use Rose as her middle name and find something else. Sorry.
For me it’s a STRONG association
I for sure thought of titanic and I've never even watched that movie.
Jonathan and Rosalie would be as close as I would get.
Absolutely yes. Sorry. If they weren't a romantic pair I think it wouldn't matter that the movie is still so well-known. But it's like naming siblings Romeo and Juliet or Bonnie and Clyde. You say the pair of names and everyone thinks immediately of the famous couple.
USUALLY on these threads I'm the one saying, "it's fine, you're overthinking."
In this case... Jack and Rose are the Titanic couple. Like, my brain went there without me even asking it to try, and I'm not a big movie fan or anything. I'm just someone who was alive in 1997-98.
Immediately think of Titanic. And then there’s the wtf realization that brother/sister are named after a romantic couple. Gross
I hear Jack and Rose I think Titanic
I had to double-check that this wasn't r/namenerdcirclejerk
Yes! My daughter is Rosalie (Rosie) and my best friends son is Jack. When we are together people comment “like Jack and rose”. I imagine if they were siblings it would NOT be something I’d want my kids to be associated with.
Personally I would think about the girl in my second grade class in 1997 who named her hermit crabs Jack and Rose (after Jack and Rose from Titanic)
Immediately thought titanic sorry!!
Yes, Titanic is the first thing that comes to mind
Absolutely too titanic adjacent. Do not do it.
Yup. For reference, I scrolled past this post on my home page, didn't really register the full title and checked to see if this was a promoted sub post or if I unknowingly had joined a Titanic sub.
Why not Jill?
Not for me.. super common normal names - but seems like a Titanic thing for a lot of people too.
It made me think of Doctor who
yeah i do think of titanic but maybe you could still use a version of rose, like rosalie, rosemary, rosalind
How about Rosalie and call her Rosie?? Straight up Rose is very Titanic-y
I actually know two families with a big brother Jack and little sister Rose
i have to admit, as a namenerd and enjoyer of knowing celebrity names, my first thought went to johnny depp's kids - he has a jack and a lily-rose. so almost jack and rose, but not entirely!
With Titanique the musical breathing new life into these characters, yes, it's too adjacent.
So Titanic
Consider Roslyn, Rosemarie if you must
Does it even matter if people think of that?
They’re two perfectly lovely, traditional names. So what if they were used in some Hollywood film.
If you have to Rosalie would be better.
Definitely way too associated with the titanic.
Yep it’s too close
I would 100% automatically think of Titanic.
I don’t think it will affect them in their lives, but I would teach them to say I’m king of the world! And try to set up situations where one of them says I’ll never let go and then immediately lets go.
Adults will think of Titanic, but teens and kids don't know that reference anymore. By the time they grow up, it would be less likely. They'd get asked about it frequently, but not constantly. Also, how many times are you going to be introducing both at the same time? At family functions, their names would be known. They get introduced separately at school and might get nicknames from friends. You don't have to tell strangers your kids' names.
I thought of Titanic even though I actually never saw that movie. That wouldn’t stop me from using Rose though.
I thought of titanic immediately, but those are both great names. If anyone asks if those names were chosen based on titanic, just say, no, we just love those names. That will be the end of it.
They are such common names (in a good way!), and Titanic was a long time ago.
I'm going against the grain here but having watched it once when it first came out I had totally forgotten both the characters names so not an issue for me.
I know someone with a Jack and Rose and people are like “oh that’s funny. Like the titanic” but no one thinks they’re named after them and it doesn’t feel weird. I would do it if you like it.
It’s just names of made up characters. Just use the names if you want, there’s nothing weird about it, they are both perfectly normal names.
I really disagree - Jack and Rose were chosen for those characters because they were typical of names in that era. There really were and are so many Jack and Rose in the world that Titanic shouldn't be the only association 😭 It's not Romeo and Juliet.
I think it will spring to mind but I don’t think it’s a terrible impression? I don’t think people will assume you named them after the movie and it’s not creepy territory like Romeo and Juliet.
No; because the movie is old now
