• Topographically it’s one hole. This isn’t a debate, it’s a mathematical fact

Mathematical isn't the only form in the world. A cave entrance is, linguistically, a hole.  Even if there's no secondary exit.

Topologically, there isn't a hole. Linguistically, there is.

A cave is a cave, if it were to have two connected entrances then that would be a tunnel (I think. English is my fourth language)

I'm fairly certain most caves have multiple entrances that are interconnected.

Not necessarily. In a cave system you can just have one entrance but several paths to traverse.

It's a debate on semantics. Colloquial usage is not the same as mathematical usage…

  • I think one problem here is that this is a reply not a top-level comment. The main commenter said 1, like a donut and these comments are both saying 2 but not really providing any reason to refute the original point. They're not really continuing a conversation they're just making their own declarations which are opposite to the original.

Your second problem is there is a "correct" answer. The mathematical field of topology deals specifically with this type of issue and the answer is unambiguously one. Now you could argue that's irrelevant as this is a discussion about word use or colloquial use but a bunch of people won't see it that way so your just adding needless contrarianism to a correct answer and thus preventing people from learning about it, ergo: downvote.

Your final problem is, of course, that it's a teenagers subreddit.

  • Not so mysterious. People cannot and do not want to accept other ideas and perspectives, so they just downvote

It's not an opinion. It's math. Topology to be precise. You don't say that 2×2=34, it's not a debate or anything. It's one long hole

Linguistically though, a hole can just be a pit, like if you dig a hole.

    but straws have no pits

    mean

Anyway I've given it some more thought, and a straw actually has zero holes, because it counts as a tunnel

If it’s a bad idea or perspective then it’s not worth accepting.

You wouldn’t say a standard donut has two holes. You wouldn’t say you “stabbed two holes in a piece of paper” when you only poked it once through. You wouldn’t say “I dug two holes through the center of the earth” when you just tunneled through straight once.

With a straw it’s pretty straight forward. There is one hole, liquid goes in one side of the hole and comes out the other side of the hole.

Sure I’ll respect your right to hold a different perspective. I can even understand what argument you would be trying to make with “two holes” especially since it’s not linguistically or colloquially consistent all of the time (gunshot wounds, cave systems, calling things holes that are actually just divots or elevation drops or whatever, etc), however I am not going to just blindly “accept” another perspective just because someone else has it.

Color blind people have the perspective that there are no numbers in those color blind tests. This is objectively wrong, and not worth accepting.

It's not a "different perspective", it's just a misunderstanding of the original comment. Them using a different (wrong, in terms of topology) definition of "hole" makes the comment detrimental to the conversation.

How is this 'detrimental' to the conversation? It continues, nevertheless. If you were in a scientific talk, and at the end one of the fellow audience members asked one question which clearly showed they didn't understand the talk (and the speaker perhaps had to politely restate their argument/interpretation), would the other audience members start booing the questioner?!

    I don’t believe you. DOWNVOTE! /s

Basically this entire subreddit explained, lol

  • the downvoted comment is simply incorrect. it's not mysterious.

It’s actually right straws only have one hole

i was only looking at the second downvoted comment, i somehow missed that the other was also downvoted

Oh yea I’m confused on why they downvoted both like what opinion do they agree with😭😭😭

    That's my question 😭

I get down voting one, but why downvote both

  • They also downvoted the other opinion that it has two holes so what does a straw just not a single hole downvoters

  • Given that the last comment ends with “donut” I’m guessing they’re downvoted for sharing their subjective opinions on the actual mathematical answer.

  • Donut is the dumbest and most cringe ‘insult’. Only on cringeit

  • Cause hes dumb

  • I feel people just didn't care about your comment. Worst thing is, I got an automatic ban because of downvotes, the ban was lifted though after making an appeal.

I just didn't know what the reason was for the ban and that makes it so confussing.

  • And the guy saying straws have 0 holes got upvoted? I dont get it, lol.
