I love these paintings because they feel so much like what I imagined “that time” to be … with all my anachronisms and really my prejudices intact lol
This looks so cool. Of course, sitting butt naked on plain stone, and trying to hold yourself up without any pillows while nodding off on opium does not sound fun at all (sounds downright impossible). The idea of eating raw peppers or fruit while smoking doesn’t seem appealing either…
But the painting still looks so damn cool lol and I’m with you 100% I wish I could jump in here
Sure. And Triumph of the Will had great cinematography. Gerome's work is technically excellent. If he'd had the slightest bit of taste or intelligence, he could have even created art.
This got downvoted but u are 100% right, dont let them silence you. His art is pure kitch.
People defend realistic art to death like it's rare, you have a lot of skillfull artists. i promise, hating male gaze orientalist artists is not the end of the world, art world will be just fine
I feel you. It’s all fascinating to read about from a historical perspective, though; Gérôme in particular. His rise to fame and the context in which it happened are worth looking into.
I will loudly proclaim my love for Orientalism and the male-gaze. Because you know what’s gradually, progressively, inevitably become even more boring than seeing it?
I honestly do not understand the downvote. It seems that many people still have little to no awareness of how orientalism has shaped, and continues to shape, the representation of people from non-western cultures.
Its impact has been massive, and it remains especially violent for women because orientalism is deeply intertwined with colonial history.
The way women were portrayed functioned as a strategy of sexualization, turning their bodies into exotic, available, and often silent objects. And this kind of representation was more socially acceptable when applied to "oriental" women than to european women, precisely because it relied on distance, domination, and fantasy.
So, yes, the technique is impressive, yes the composition can be magnificent, but we should be honest about the messages those images convey.
Everything is not black or white. Orientalism can be admired and criticized at the same time.
Imagine having a stick up your butt so long you not only feel actual hatred toward a work of art, but feel the need to comment about it on a social media forum. Don't worry, I'm sure your priest of choice will shrive you for having seen a 19th-century depiction of some boobs and a couple butt cheeks. Your sins will be forgiven.
Ugh what I wouldn’t give to honk on some opium in a communal bath with a Longtime Female Companion

Core strength baby
The reflections in this are very well done, he also rendered the rubber tube of the hookah quite well. Nice painting!
My butt hurt just looking at how she sits on the edge of the pool!
why are there bell peppers lying around?
That's what I wanna know! Why bell peppers? That's an intentional choice.
Getting high naked with friends
Just me and the girls...hanging out totally naked cause we're not gay...
Good Lord I hate all this stupid Orientalist male-gaze trash.
I don't really like Michelangelo's work because of the overly anatomical muscular bodies but I can still acknowledge that it's extremely well done

Hearing about how much you hate it.
Responding to some rando on Reddit instead of the painting, eh? Let me know how that works out for you.
1880s middle class porn
Then don’t look at it
Then don't read my comment ;)

Very well put. Thanks.
you sound annoying
Get over it. No one is forcing you to look at it. Do you even draw or paint the human figure?
That’s such a weak response to criticism. They aren’t even critiquing the execution.

Imagine being so stupid that you're reading a social media forum and are shocked that it's social and a forum.
