  • On a regular work visa, but I was able to register my short term furnished rental with my ward office without issue. It depends on the rules of your city/ward. Then when we moved into our “permanent” rental I changed our registered address.

It's not so much about documentation as whether short term housing like that is allowed at all. Many cities/wards simply do not allow you to register an Airbnb address at all.

No proof. I just wrote my address down on the form.

Some municipalities don’t let you register an Airbnb address, so you’ll want to check ahead of time. I assume they check your address against a list of registered minpaku.

FYI it took us a little bit over a month of staying in temporary lodgings before we could get into our regular rental. First we had to view properties, then went through most of the process with one property but then it fell through (just missed out to another person). Then we went through the process with another property.

After signing contracts we had to furnish the apartment enough to feel comfortable brining a kid in (I wanted the fridge and washing machine and a bed at least), and it took a little time to schedule delivery.

I think we ended up at nearly a month and a half in the temporary place.

Address registration problem on a 4-month Business Manager visa in Kyoto

I'm moving to Kyoto in 10 days with a 4 months business manager visa with my wife and my son. I was in the process of buying a small house but everything went off and I'm now looking for a rental.

I have a lawyer who is giving me advices and who did all the paperwork for the COE and he will do the paperwork for registering the company.

This business manager visa requires me to register my address at the city hall as soon as possible, so I can open a bank account and then register the company.

I contacted a few real estate agencies to find an apartment in a hurry, one told me they won't be able to do anything before I have my zairyuu card and even with it, it will be tricky as I don't have a japanese pay slip yet.

I'm fine staying in an hotel or an Airbnb for a couple of months, time to find a rental or eventually buy, but my lawyer told me I can't just go to the city hall with a hotel or airbnb address, I need to provide the rental contract or the proof of property.

I feel trapped and the situation is really stressful. I'm looking for help. What people in my situation has done in the past when they arrived on a 4 months business manager visa?

  • Welcome to the bureaucracy of Japan. I’m glad that you have a lawyer. Opening the bank account will also be a pain. They actually came to check my office twice before opening my business account. There is a popular temporary place called Oak something who rents to foreigners. They can give you a contract. Do not buy any property with a 4 months business manager visa. You must get your business set up first and then get some longtime visa first. Good luck.

You cannot register your address at city hall with a hotel or an Airbnb

That depends on the city/ward. While it's true that many don't allow it there are also plenty of cities/wards that do.
