It all hinges on who they cast as Jareth imo. Needs to be a semi-androgynous man with absolutely captivating charisma and sex appeal - a fey. I've seen some staggeringly missing-the-point suggestions like Tilda Swinton (whom I love but is NOT the same kind of androgynous as Bowie).
If it's going to pick up with Sarah, it has to hit some marks about her character that I believe Eggers could hit based on Nosferatu that I've never been convinced another director - even del Toro - would understand.
My favorite suggestion is Nicholas Hoult. I don’t particularly like the idea of recasting, but I think that he would crush it with that sort of character.
Hmmmmmmmm... That's the best suggestion I've seen so far. Not sure I am 100% on board but it's a lot closer than some suggestions. He at least can do magnetic and romantic - I've never seen him do it at the same time but I wouldn't put it past him. I'd say his face still having a sort of babyishness/lack of androgyny is the main thing that makes me pause.
There's got to be some kdrama or cdrama actor who can pull it off, but they just don't have the English acquisition, like Luo Yunxi.
I did say semi-androgynous - he's not right down the middle, he's still rather masculine. But, to me, he's not manly per se, and I think Dev Patel is. Of course, that could be because nowadays he's always got magnificent facial hair.
Why have Jareth in the story at all? I think someone trying to fill Bowie’s shoes would be a mistake. It’s a rich and wonderful world full of interesting characters, no need to ruin the story we all know and love.
And so god help me, if they put a cgi Bowie in this movie I will riot!
I just recently watched it again with my 14 and 12 year old daughters. they loved it and want to go see it in the theaters during the anniversary screenings
You remind me of the babe
What babe
The babe with the power
What power?
power of voodoo.
Who doo?!
You do!
Do what?
Remind me of the babe
I saw my baby, crying hard as babe could cry! What could I do?
Anybody else excited for the Robert Eggers sequel? Of all living directors, I think he could pull it off.

Now you’ve got me picturing different actors in eyeliner. Dev Patel could sure be pretty and smoldering lol.
Gorgeous man but not very fey imo. He's quite masculine with a sort of seriousness about him imo, even in some of his lighter roles.
I never saw Bowie as “fey” either. He’s svelte and beautiful, but his voice and demeanor read masculine to me. Oh well. Just musings.

Hmm, Lee Pace?
Edit: didn't realize he's 46 already, I just keep thinking of him as Thranduil in the Hobbit.
He's still got it, I could see it working. Especially with his affectations. Have you seen him in Foundation?
I haven't, I loved the novels though.

Honestly I think you're right - Bowie is irreplaceable and fuck anyone who suggests they make a CGI Bowie!
If he was younger (hell might still pull it off now), Benedict Cumberbatch as Jareth
Pass
The babe, Toby, now runs his own puppeteering company. Seems only fair his company gets involved.
I've met him, he lives by me!
I was vehemently against a sequel/reboot/whatever until I heard it was eggers. I believe he'll keep the spirit of the original look and art direction.
if it doesnt have muppets, I'm out
With Lisa & Brian Henson producing (alongside Chris Columbus) I'm sure there'll be lots of practical characters!
wait really? That's awesome
“Yes, should you need us…”
David Bowie’s package
Don’t go that way!!
Smell bad
So, had enough, eh? All right then, throw down your weapons, and I'll see that you're well-treated.
Holy crap, a new trailer that doesn’t fade in and out of black? The world is healing.
I cannot wait to hear Dance Magic Dance blasting in a theater. Bowie really was perfect in this role.
Huge flop on its original release but became a big cult hit on home video. Very good movie. The score is excellent.

Reboot / sequel / tv series announcement incoming?
Jennifer Connelly
