This is one of those movies I watch and rewatch and love more each time. I sometimes watch this in the dead middle of summer because it's such a good pick-me-up. It's one of my favorite movies of all time, not just Christmas movies.

Excellent cast, including Norm Macdonald playing a lovably irascible skiff captain and JK Simmons as the big red man himself. Will Sasso and Joan Cusack as the heads of rival families locked in a multi-generational war. Jason Schwartzman as a postman sent to get an icy hellscape ready for postal service (against his will), and Rashida Jones as the local school teacher who catches his eye.

The movie has a wry sense of humor that never becomes cynical and, in fact, is a sort of cure for cynicism: it shows what it looks like to overcome cynicism and find hope, or connection.

Watch it if you haven't; rewatch it if you have. This one's a keeper, y'all.

  • I watch it every year, animation is beautiful and story hits different

I wish the Sergio Pablos Animation (SPA) studio behind this would have taken off. I loved the unique and innovative 2D animation that it had. The cast is spectacular and the story are emotive (the ending always gives me goosebumps). It should have been the first work of a great new animated studio.

Instead Netflix halted development on the second film the studio was going to make and now they haven’t done anything since. In fact, it’s hard to find any information online that shows they still exist.

It stinks, but at least they made this classic that totally should have beaten out Toy Story 4 for the Oscar.

If you liked this, you should watch blue eyes samurai. It's not as well animated but it's eye candy too (but much more violent ofc).

  • Klaus got robbed by Toy Story 4 at the Oscars because the board didn't watch animated features and just went with the name they recognized.

Fingers crossed they don't pull the same shit with KPop Demon Hunters

  • Watched it for the first time last night because of all the other comments on this sub about it. I loved it.

  • Klaus is my favorite Christmas movie without question. It makes me cry every time. I've been spreading the gospel of Klaus since it's release. Everyone I've told about it watches it annually now too.

  • My family and I watched it for the first time a few years ago and we liked it so much we added it to our usual rotation of Christmas/holiday movies. It's neat how they find such a clever way to explore the "origins" of Santa Claus, and the voice cast is just delightful. The movie overall is (in my opinion) the perfect balance of humorous and heartfelt.

  • First time I watched it years ago I almost turned it off bc of the Postman stuff at the beginning. I was like, wtf I thought this was a Christmas movie?? It has soundly landed in my top 5 Christmas movies of all time ❤️🎄

Yeah, just watched it and I totally loved it but it did seem like the first 20-30 minutes could have been tightened up. Once you're in though...

  • Just did my annual watch last night! I always cry at "I'm coming, love" and then Jesper's final line. It's such a beautiful film!!

  • I love this movie so much. We rewatch it every year.

  • Best holiday movie, any category.

  • Just wish the song in the middle of it wasn't SO corny. But yeah, it's great

That song's grown on me but it is a bit jarring the first few watches, ha.

I feel like it’s not a Christmas movie if it doesn’t have one song that sucks.

I genuinely love that song. The scene of the little girl wind surfing is just so beautifully joyful, and the song contributes to that beauty and joy. It’s a movie about the value of earnestness even when it’s not particularly graceful, and I feel like the song captures that idea.

  • Follow it up w Angela's Christmas ( animated Netflix ).

  • Other then just being a great movie i think another reason why its so liked because the main two characters sound like the david spade and john goodman in emperors new groove, if that makes sense. Similar voices from two beloved movies

  • You've convinced me! That cast and your enthusiasm and description... Sounds like something I'll enjoy. We could all use a pick me up for obvious nightmarish reasons. Thanks!

Report back on your thoughts. I never get tired of hearing how much people enjoy this movie.

Reporting back! Just got done watching it, and while it took a little while to get its hooks in me with what seemed like a slow developing avalanche of exposition, I absolutely LOVED it!

Not only was it highly entertaining, but it made me think, really examine the whole Christmas thing from a different perspective.

Loved that there was not a single bit of religious malarkey, unless you want to read into the symbolism, in which case an argument could be made for this film being an attempt to separate religion/politics/anything that divides us from the more positive aspects of Christmas that really do exist. A shout into the void against the forces that keep us under their control.

Oh, and as a lifetime animation nerd the technical aspects of that are insanely great. Hand drawn animation! Just like the 40's but with all kinds of modern advancements! Not nearly as colorful, but that's what the story demands...

So happy that I saw this and even followed up on it! I can definitely see this becoming an annual watch. Thanks!

    ❤️ That was beautiful, thanks!

  • There’s a few small things that bugged me, such as them making a big and very specific detail about having to stamp the letters, so the main problem toward the end of all those extra letters being sent makes no sense.

Further, it’s bizarre that Christmas isn’t mentioned AT ALL until the postman comes up with the idea. If there was some indication that Christmas was a celebrated thing in this culture/world to begin with, it would have been a little less jarring to suddenly be talking about it…in a Christmas movie.

Other than that, I loved it!

  • Great movie, another good recent Christmas movie is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Anyone have some others from the last 6 or so years?

After Klaus, I think The Holdovers is my favorite Christmas movie (or it may be tied for It's a Wonderful Life for #2). It's not saccharine or overly sentimental, so if that's what you're in the mood for, look elsewhere. But it nails the time period so well, and the authenticity of the characters is something else. It was my Best Picture of 2023.

  • any other good christmas movies that have come out in the past couples years? I actually liked red one that came out last year

  • I start crying from minute one. I start crying just thinking about it. I watch it on Christmas Day every year. It’s so beautiful and sweet and wistful every time.

  • Watching it tonight!! One of my favorites

  • The fact that this is 2D animation still blows my mind. The lighting makes it look 3D in a way that feels completely unique and frankly better than most Pixar stuff coming out lately.

  • I love this movie and watch it a few times a year since it came out. I get so disappointed when I chat with people and no one has heard of it. The story is heart-warming and funny, the animation is beautiful (I often pause at the Northern Lights scene towards the end because the art is so spectacular!), the characters are delightful, and the soundtrack punches the feelings.

When he opens the door on Margu and tells her "go away" is so mean and funny.

The creepy kids in the beginning stabbing the snowman with a carrot.

    The birdhouses.

    The silent wood planing scene.

    All 10/10.

  • It's gorgeous, it's cute and it came out of nowhere. One of the (very few) netflix gems.

  • I always almost tear up by the end.

  • it's my annual tradition to remind myself to watch it and fail. I will download it now and hopefully get to it soon!

  • For another animated revision to the Santa mythology, Arthur Christmas, from Aardman Animation (the studio behind Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep) is also good. Not quite as good as Klaus, but very enjoyable.
