Genuinely baffled at the people that saw this team go 70-92 and finish 19-35 WITH A HEALTHY BYRON BUXTON and think “they could win the division.”
Their big free agent signing has a negative WAR over the past three seasons. They have the worst bullpen in MLB.
Insulting to the fan base to pretend this is about trying to win the division vs avoiding a last place finish.
Jays made a big turn around last year. Anything can happen. You need to get a bounce back from Royce Lewis for sure. Oddly enough for my Jays Oddly enough Popkins helped our bats. Not sue why you got rid of that dude.
The Jays need to clear salary. The twins can just sign free agents, but it's hard attracting them to the twins at this point. The twins have money to spend. It wasn't that long ago it was also very hard to get free agents in Toronto.
I'm trading you Berrios, Santander and Giminez. Berrios pitched through bicep problems last eyar. He's probably a 4ish ERA type, but he isn't that old. He could still see season's in 3.5 range. You guys know him better than anyone anyways. 2.5 to 3.5 wins. Santander also lost most of the season due to a shoulder injury. He played a month with it and killed his numbers. He's a 30 HR bat. 44 the year before. Giminez bat isn't great. His underlying metrics suggest he's better than the numbers last year. Bit of bad luck. He's probably a 85 to 90 OPS+ bat, but he has elite base running and gold glove defense you can plop at SS. He's a 2 to 2.5 win player.
Now I get the contracts are too much for at least 2 of the 3. I'm giving cash so you're paying Berrios 3 years 16 mil AAV, 12 on Giminez AAV and Santander is 13.7. I think santander is pretty fair really but I can shave that down to 12 too.
I'm giving you your choice of Nimmala or Jo Jo Parker. Both 1st round draft picks. Our number 2 and 3 ranked prospects behind Yesavage.
I need Buxton back. Now Buxton carries massive injury risk. If he plays 70 games and is healthy for the post season that's all my Jays need. We have enough depth to cover in season if he gets hurt. The twins need him for 150 games which is a big gamble. The Jays would be gambling too, but we're at a point to go all in. Take the injury risk, salary relief allows us to sign Bichette and have dry powder available for the trade deadline.
You have Ryan and Lopez. Berrios putting up a 3.5 ERA, Santander putting up 30 bombs, Giminez putting up a .690 OPS with otherworldly defense at short stop. Yeah, you might still be a tick short. You need a lewis bounce back. This is the AL central though, one more piece and you who knows. You're still getting the long term high upside prospect.
Then again, Buxton might now want to waive his no trade and come to Toronto..lol
Your theory is already broken by the fact that you're assuming the Twins would add 25 million in salary. We are not.
We are going to be cutting salary further this year.
Hence Witty-Stock's annoyance. And my own.
You're talking about a Lewis bounce back. But its been 2 bad years back to back. At some point this is just who he is. Im holding hope that the change in coaching staff will invigorate him and cause that bounce back. But im honestly skeptical
The Twins do not view themselves has having money to spend.
"We're going to focus on speed and defense"
signs Josh Bell (one of the worst defenders in the league)
trades for Eric Wagaman (slow, poor defender)
signs Orlando Arcia (no longer a high level defender)
They are lying through their teeth lol. I could justify it if the guys could smack the ball around. But 2 of the 3 are awful at the plate.
Doing this whilst committing to not trading Ryan, Buxton or Lopez is malpractice. Genuine malpractice. Either put your money where your mouth is and BUILD (which they clearly arent and wont do), or trade them for hauls to build again for 3 years time
It baffles me that people can look at what this team is and say we can compete. 57 win pace post deadline and we are marginally better right now.
Just brutal. So tired of station to station on the base paths. And then it’ll be Buxton surrounded by a bunch of butchers in the field. Oof.
The youth movement should help… but only if they pan out. And with this org, that is a big “if”
If Buxton even wants to be a twin
Free Buxton
He won’t force a trade but if they go into full tank mode, he’d probably be okay being traded to a contender.
