I am about to move across the country to a small apartment in a large city - and I will be moving again every six months or so.

As someone who really likes to “nest” and loves modern decor, it’s important to me to make my new space look inviting and happy - but keep my belongings to an absolute minimum.

For frequent movers/renters who love home design, how do you maximize the look of your space with as few items as possible? I’ve been looking for easy-packing furniture and decor that doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy. Any suggestions appreciated!

  • good quality curtains. every apartment ive moved into ive installed my curtains.

  • I get everything from Good Will and then donate it back when I move again. It makes every apartment unique

  • Literally a plant

  • Throw blankets and framed pictures or art don’t have to take up a lot of space and really do feel like home. Plus you can wrap frames IN the blankets to protect them during the move so it’s self-sustaining lol

  • Pick 3 colors that work well together you can utilize throughout your home. For me (first time living without a male partner) my colors are pink, green, blue and yellow. Carried throughout my home. It gives it a more cohesive and welcoming feel.

Mood lighting can be something a simple as hue lightbulbs.

Nearly all furniture can carefully be taken apart to be easily moved but maybe consider something like a platform bed with built in storage underneath so you don't have to worry about a dresser. I love my daughter's Ikea bed it has a dresser built into. It's been moved 2 or 3 times now since 2021 and because it came in flat boxes and I had to assemble it myself, I can easily take it apart, and reassemble it. no matter where we move she has a bed/dresser combo that will work in any space.

If you're getting a new sofa get a modular sofa ( with good clipins) that you can connect in different ways to fit whatever living room you end up in.

  • A fabric wall hanging might be what you’re looking for. It can be displayed hanging off a rod, and then folded or rolled up to move, then displayed again.

Pillow slips/covers. This would allow you to nest. Purchase the pillow slips you want, and grab some pillows from a thrift store. When fits time to move, take the slip, leave the pillow.

What do you typically do to nest? What items can you acquire to allow you to nest.

Pick 2-3 items that feel like home. When you have them, you are home. Send to me moving every 6 months would require travelling light, perhaps without furniture.

  • Traveled for work 3 years. Lived mostly very rural. decorated each place simply. Made sure to keep my diet and workout routine the same. Splurged on “forever” items coffee maker, some art - photos - a bed quilt and plants. I’m done traveling and have some of the art forever items in my current place. I feel nostalgic when I use them.

  • We decorate with pictures. We have a set amount of frames, so we switch out the photos in all of them every few weeks. It gives our home a new feel, we get to display memories throughout different eras, and it's a great balance of minimalism with personality.

We also decorate with functional art. I'm a painter and a few years ago I've discovered my love of pottery. Instead of large canvases, I now paint bowls, plates, and mugs with scenes from places we've been or with other sentimental meaning. Every time we eat, we get to enjoy a memory! Guests love looking through our cabinets and selecting which item they'll dine with 😂♥️

I'm nearing capacity with how many plates we have, so I've started creating small dinner plates and water bowls for our cats (they use purchased ceramic ones) I get to enjoy my hobby while keeping the clutter down in our home!

  • This might be a weird tip, but I always use the same light bulb color in every house. I always use the same shade of white when painting, it's Antique white, the cheap brand from Walmart. I used to always use white towels, white sheets and white plates, but lately I've switched to black towels and I feel like they look better against white walls in the bathroom. I've had the same lighthouse art print hanging in every hallway of every house I've lived. Small things like this make a place feel like it's "mine."

Family photos, plants, throw pillow covers (if you can stand them, I personally hate throw pillows, but to each their own,) throw rugs, curtains all make a place feel like home.

  • I don't move often, but one item that makes my space super cozy is an orange light led alarm clock. They are called daylight alarm clocks and light up slowly before the set time. But you can turn on the light anytime. The soft orange glow is on all the time in my small apartment. Makes cozy quick.

  • I think you need to try to embrace negative space. It may feel uncomfortable at first. I thought I disliked it until my son knocked off my daughter’s small shelf of trinkets and realized just how much more relaxing her space was just having that shelf empty. It was super cute up but mentally, taxing.

  • OK, so you need colorful things that add joy and texture, but don't take long to set up or take down, and which you can develop a system to pack.

I'd want lamps with nice bulbs to read by in both living room and bedroom, a big-ish living room rug, curtains in both living room and bedroom (hung on a dowel rod + command hooks), a large piece of beloved art for every room (command strips), and a couple of plants, maybe cooking herbs (could buy new ones in each city if hard to move). I'd also say that since you need bedding and a shower curtain, you may as well get ones you think are beautiful.

Are you renting furnished apartments, or do you have apartments? If not, I'd get a pretty folding dining table and folding chairs, bookshelf, foldable lightweight bed frame (we have one similar to this), side table or tv tray, and modular couch like Anabei.

  • I think textiles go a far war to make a space feel cozy and inviting. A really nice blanket to snuggle up in.

If money us not an issue I could imagine going for a (quality) tapestry to hang up that’ll definitely transform the space.

If youre not the fan of tapestries maybe a poster of an image you love. Or a nice picture. Although a poster has the advantage of easier storage for moving

  • I like natural nice smelling hard-milled hand and body soap. I also buy nice candles and incense. The Yuka app is great to find products without chemicals. I learned from a friend to wrap small decorative items with beautiful fabric scarves. Scarves can be used to decorate small surfaces, like a table runner.

  • Nice incense and throw blankets.

  • I would never go without my ninja spin laundry water extractor spin dryer thing. made in agentina. 100% must
same for our three stage R.O. filter
    and foam mats of course

  • Buy the Aesop incense holder or brass oil burner. Both so beautiful and are pieces of art but also functional.
