I finally switched to basically using baby soft toothbrushes because I constantly find myself brushing too hard if I don't pay attention closely. Seems to make my gums a lot happier and my teeth are just as clean.
I’m waiting for my confirmation of a connective tissue disorder. My gums are so fragile that if I brush too hard, or in one place too long, even with the softest toothbrush, they get shredded.
I wonder if using a water pik would be helpful. At least to get to the base of your teeth where your gums are and between your teeth. And then use an electric toothbrush by keeping it still in each spot away from your gums to get the rest.
When you brush too hard and the bristles are bending they essentially arent doing their job. You need just the tips of the bristles swirling around there to do it right
I used to brush waaaay too hard and you know that liiiittle bit of skin that attached your top gum to the inside of your top lip? Yep. Right through it. Blood everywhere.
It went right through in one slice! So no pain, no pain, no pain, WHACK! PAIN PAIN PAIN AND ALSO BLOOD.
It was so painful too because it just kept sort of moving and re opening. It's healed now, not reattached, but not an open wound.
I'm really good at injuring myself by accident, some of my more recent ones include sawing in to my own hand while trimming a tree limb and slicing the end of my finger with a kitchen knife. Not sure how I didn't hit bone with both of those, they also took ages to heal!
That's strange – I had that bit pierced and didn't feel a thing. Subsequently tore the piercing a few weeks later while brushing, still didn't feel a thing. I no longer really have anything there.
You must have gone through it at just the right angle lol.
Yeah, I have seen several homes in the US that were built in the 70's that have a heat lamp in the ceiling. Sometimes alone, other times in a housing witha regular lamp and fan.
The heat lamps were on a turn dial timer in the spot where a switch would be. So that it couldn't be left on. You turn the dial upto 45 minutes.
lol and here I am with a house that was built in the 90's and my downstairs bathroom has one with no timer at all. lol
my house inspector told me if he was me, he'd remove it immediately. They're in the top 10 on the list of most likely way for a house fire to start (delow obvious ones like your dryer, your furnace, unattended candles, and the stovetop, etc.).
Red lights are much less disruptive to circadian rythym and are good to use in general as bedtime approaches and during the night. It's the same reason why people use the color temperature adjustments on their phone screens at night. I can't be sure this is the reason here, but its the reason I tried out those programmable light bulbs a few years back.
And you do not want to go through that surgery. I was extremely fortunate to have healed as easily as I did, because everyone else I spoke to said it was the most painful procedure they'd ever had. The words "worse than childbirth" were used by one woman.
I also healed “easily” but I was only like 10 or so years old when I had my gum graft done + and it was hell on earth. They gave me headphones to listen to music during the procedure but I was ready to get up out of the chair and throw hands
I was 40 when I had mine done. My surgeon was a total creep but I will say that he was great at his job. I warned him that I have a very low pain tolerance and prefer extra freezing so I didn't feel a thing, and I was in constant shock about all the inappropriate things he kept saying to his poor nurse, which distracted me from the surgery itself.
I was off painkillers in a day and a half and pretty much recovered after a week, (he said it would only be 7 - 10 days recovery time, but he told my work that I needed 2 weeks off, haha). My regular dentist actually screamed when she saw my gums because she said she'd never seen anyone's gum graft look this good.
But my buddy had the exact same surgery at a different place, his surgeon took out a way bigger chunk of tissue, and he couldn't eat solid food for 6 weeks.
Yea, OP needs to treat themselves to an electric toothbrush which has a pressure sensor built in...brush too hard and a wee LED lights up telling you to ease off a bit 👍🪥
There is a solution for brushing too hard! Try brushing with your brush grasped just between your pointer and thumb, or middle, pointer, and thumb. A dental hygienist taught me to brush that way after I gave myself gum damage by brushing too hard. It’s totally fixed the problem!
Dentist here… why are you at war with your teeth and gums?
You need a fraction of the force you are using, and you are for sure doing damage, particularly to the tiny blood vessels that supply your gums.
Go easy. If you can scratch the surface of a ripe peach with your typical brushstroke you are brushing too hard. Brushing with your non dominant hand is another way to use less force.
I was once making a cup of tea and the spoon snapped when I was squashing the teabag in the cup. I spilled tea everywhere.
But I persevered. I refilled the cup. I lifted the cup to my face and handle broke. Spilling the boiling hot tea all over myself.
I thought. It's just a cup of tea. I just remembered where I was. In prison for a crime I didn't commit.
My dentist told me that brushing too hard is actually worse than if you didn't brush at all. I don't know if that's true, but with all the dialog about brushing too hard in the comments, I wanted to add that.
Get an electric tooth brush. As others have said, you’re brushing way too hard and that’s really bad. An electric tooth brush will help you use less pressure.
FYI: A toothbrush should be replaced every 6 months. When the bristles fray (and I mean much less fraying than is evident in this photo), the toothbrush becomes less effective.
Dentist here (well nearly). As other ppl have mentioned here i can confirm that you are brushing too hard. This can result in gum recession, sensitivity and wear of the exposed root ciment and ultimately periodontitis.
Three tips :
- invest in an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor
- book an appointment with your hygienist or dentist (depending on your territory) for a brushing education session
- trust that a lighter handed technique will be effective to remove plaque. It’s less about pressure and more about getting all the surfaces of the tooth
I have an Oral-B IO brush that goes red when you push too hard. I definitely pushed too hard in the past. You'd be surprised how much too hard you're actually pressing.
I think back to TV show Reacher. The only thing he says he owns is a toothbrush. In one episode his room gets destroyed and he comes out of the bathroom with his broken toothbrush and goes “they broke my toothbrush, now I don’t own anything” with this sad puppy look.
OK guys, I get it. I'll brush more gentle. Yes, my gums are fine. The toothbrush was like 6mo old. And the red light isn't a heat lamp. It's just a red light bulb because I have mild dermatillomania, so the red light prevents me from picking at my skin in the mirror. I'll have to show yall all the other stupid shit I've broken from being too aggressive.
Your bristles are a sign you brush too hard.
So’s the broken toothbrush
Duct tape fixes everything.
Tape your tooth back on
Just like? Tape up your teeth? So they dont get dirty in the first place!
Dentists hate this one hack
Instructions unclear, teeth are now duct taped together
Duct tape would actually fix this. Can't use too much pressure if it bends when you do
Except my relationships.
Put it in rice
Im surprised the head is still attached
Why can i say I'm not surprised? 🤣
I'm not a dentist, but I was a dental lab technician for almost 8yrs...my guess is about 70% of people brush to hard. Way too hard.
It really doesn't take much, but people treat brushing their teeth like they're trying to clean an oven without oven cleaner. =p

That sounds really horrible to deal with.
When you brush too hard and the bristles are bending they essentially arent doing their job. You need just the tips of the bristles swirling around there to do it right
A dental lab technician told me to brush with oven cleaner. That's what I heard.
Or she just uses her toothbrush for too long.
Why not both? 🤔
Hey don’t kinkshame
I had to get a load of work done on my teeth for exactly this problem. Definitely worth saying something
Really? Of all things here the bristles were the tell tale signs? lol
The broken toothbrush might be a sign they press a little too hard
There are other signs
Brushing too hard actually does significant damage to your tooth enamel, and that tooth brush shows some very hard brushing.
Not to mention damaging your gums. Brushing them like you’re cleaning grout isn’t so good.
I used to brush waaaay too hard and you know that liiiittle bit of skin that attached your top gum to the inside of your top lip? Yep. Right through it. Blood everywhere.
Holy fucking shit, the pain before hand wasn't a clue? God, I'm squirming in sympathetic pain over here. Sounds like you learned your lesson, though.
It went right through in one slice! So no pain, no pain, no pain, WHACK! PAIN PAIN PAIN AND ALSO BLOOD.
It was so painful too because it just kept sort of moving and re opening. It's healed now, not reattached, but not an open wound.

Oof, lol. You need a bubble or something!
I have been told. I think it's too late for me at this point.
I will remember you whenever I think of winging a physical task to carry on your legacy 🫡
I think they need basic safety training. How do you even manage to do any of these??
Some people have motor deficits. Before we just called them “clumsy”.
That's strange – I had that bit pierced and didn't feel a thing. Subsequently tore the piercing a few weeks later while brushing, still didn't feel a thing. I no longer really have anything there.
You must have gone through it at just the right angle lol.
That sounds about right for me to be honest! I think it was indeed on a diagonal and I think I skinned my gums a little in the process.
Youch!!
Yep, I just got told by my dentist I have gum recession. You know what causes that shit? Brushing too hard. Fml
Why is no one asking why your lights are red?
I’m going to take a stab in the dark and assume it’s an older home with one of the heat lamps in the ceiling.
Or they brush their teeth in a darkroom where they develop photographs
That was my assumption, as well.
I initially read this as
"That's an assumption as well" and got a fantastic chuckle before re-reading it and chuckling again.
That's a thing?! Like, living like a pet lizard? Here I am, freezing to death after a shower.
Yeah, I have seen several homes in the US that were built in the 70's that have a heat lamp in the ceiling. Sometimes alone, other times in a housing witha regular lamp and fan.

how high it could go depended on the model of switch. we had one that went to a full hour.
I had a basement apartment that had a heat lamp in the bathroom. Man, it was wonderful coming out of a shower and standing under that.
My guess was gonna be that they’re one of those red light at night people.
Sailor's delight?
Or they have a hue bulb. I keep my lights dark orange/red at night so I fall asleep easier.
I took mine out and put in a party light
Bro is from Mexico, thats why the orange filter is there.
Actually, that's genius! Red light therapy while washing up in the evening is so efficient! 😄
It’s the bloodstain on the light caused by OP’s gums bleeding from brushing too hard.
Actually might be nice first thing in the morning
How hard were we brushing???
Hard enough to start seeing red
Mildly aggressive
FYI brushing too hard is terrible for your gum health. If you don’t want to go through periodontal surgery, ease up.
And you do not want to go through that surgery. I was extremely fortunate to have healed as easily as I did, because everyone else I spoke to said it was the most painful procedure they'd ever had. The words "worse than childbirth" were used by one woman.

Bro do you drink pre workout before brushing?
Nicely done 🤣🤣
You need to chill on brushing too hard. It damages your gums and they’ll recede, and gums do not grow back..
That lighting is mildly infuriating, it hurts my eyes
Do you have any gums left?
Thanks, I hate it.
I occasionally apply enough pressure to snap things I don’t mean to when I’m releasing anger but your gums are not safe lol
There is a solution for brushing too hard! Try brushing with your brush grasped just between your pointer and thumb, or middle, pointer, and thumb. A dental hygienist taught me to brush that way after I gave myself gum damage by brushing too hard. It’s totally fixed the problem!
Hulk, is that you?
His powers are beyond comprehension
Dont brush so hard, you’re gonna ruin your gums
Were you using it to scrub your grout around the tiles or brushing your teeth?
Buy soft bristle toothbrushes and stop using so much force.
Also, floss, then mouthwash, then brush.
I recently found out I've been doing the order wrong!
Are you in Hell?
Cause that would explains it.
That toothbrush died about 4 years ago.
You are definitely brushing way too hard.
Dentist here… why are you at war with your teeth and gums?
You need a fraction of the force you are using, and you are for sure doing damage, particularly to the tiny blood vessels that supply your gums.

Good luck
That toothbrush is worn out anyway. (From brushing too hard)

I lifted the cup to my face and handle broke. Spilling the boiling hot tea all over myself. I thought. It's just a cup of tea. I just remembered where I was. In prison for a crime I didn't commit.
Jesus, how hard were you brushing!?
I don’t think anyone else has mentioned this, but brushing too hard is bad, m’kay?
jfc bud get an automatic toothbrush and press less hard - gonna blow your gums out!
Gum recession is a real disease...
You ar doing it so wrong.
OP probably wonders why they have had 10 cavities
Are you brushing your teeth in Dante’s inferno?
OP, did this happen while brushing?
Bleeding Gums Murphy, is that you?
Pushing too hard,
Pushing too hard on me
Hey, you can't eat that.
My dentist told me that brushing too hard is actually worse than if you didn't brush at all. I don't know if that's true, but with all the dialog about brushing too hard in the comments, I wanted to add that.
Is the hue from the gum blood spattering on your lightbulbs?
You should stop using a hydraulic press to brush your teeth
Toothbrushn't
This guy brushes.
Strong hand ass 😭
Reacher would be mad
How the heck?
You will have no gums in the future if you brush that hard.
Bro is living in an old Tupperware
Cackling, thank you.
Get an electric tooth brush. As others have said, you’re brushing way too hard and that’s really bad. An electric tooth brush will help you use less pressure.
Are you brushing your teeth in hell? What’s up with the lighting?
Does your bathroom double up as a dark room?
Really getting after it
Brushing too hard or is it just an old toothbrush should change brushes every 3 months...
Dude be gentle.
FYI: A toothbrush should be replaced every 6 months. When the bristles fray (and I mean much less fraying than is evident in this photo), the toothbrush becomes less effective.
it takes a lot of strength to break a toothbrush, and the thought of breaking it by pushing it against your teeth 😮
Just, how??
Are you brushing your teeth or ramming your teeth.
Fuck.
Now you can turn it into a prison weapon
Are you single?
Better a broken brush than a broken tooth!
How did this happen ?
Your teeth are very hard.
Why is your bathroom light red like some horror movie...
how do u even achieve this
Happened to me recently. Brush was older than I can even remember, so no biggie, but still an annoying surprise.
Look at the state of those bristles! No wonder it broke in half.
Orange?
Damn op hold back
Kramer?
How many miles you have on that rig?
Looks like you were due for a replacement anyway.
....and my dentist say I brush too hard....
I did that. And continued to use the brush for another 6 months.
Girl, I said, GIRL!
Stop brushing your teeth hard
RIP your tooth enamel
Jesus hulk, calm down before you brush. Soft easy strokes
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you're brushing too hard
Dentist here (well nearly). As other ppl have mentioned here i can confirm that you are brushing too hard. This can result in gum recession, sensitivity and wear of the exposed root ciment and ultimately periodontitis.

Well, atleast your gums didn't get shredded by the broken bit of the toothbrush. It happened to me and it was bad.
Your gum recession must be more pronounced than the sag of an octagenarian's mammaries 😱 I don't think your gums ARE any longer. They simply WERE 😅
Get charcoal bristle brush. You won't be able to brush that hard amymore
They don’t make em like they used to.
It was a Noothgrush.

knife snapped in a jar of fucking peanut butter, yeah, theres a first time for everything
Definitely brushing too hard.
Wait til you brush so fast that the toothbrush comes out your mouth and jams back into the side of your nose. Son of a...
Was this picture taken in Mexico?
Damn dude —- that is some hard brushing
i'm not even gonna question how you brush, but I'm kinda lol at mildy infuriating. I would be cracking up laughing at this situation.
Are you in mexico ?! why everything is...orangish ??
Why is your light orange? Looks kind of cool!
Do you brush your teeth in a film development closet?
This guy brushes his tooth enamel right off
My electric toothbrush gives a little buzz vibration if I press too hard. Maybe that’s a safety feature. 😁
OP: Mildly infuriated their toothbrush has snapped.
Other Redditors: Mildly infuriated that OP is brushing too hard which ruins their gums, broke the toothbrush and bent the bristles.
Treat yourself to a pressure sensitive electric toothbrush OP 🪥✨
Good now it’s time to buy a $35 sonicare electric toothbrush and increase the oral hygiene for good 👌
That’s what happens when you buy the toothbrush the last dentist recommended
I have an Oral-B IO brush that goes red when you push too hard. I definitely pushed too hard in the past. You'd be surprised how much too hard you're actually pressing.
You’re brushing WAY too hard
How hard were you brushing
Why is your bathroom in the sun
Attack on titans 🦷
Sharpen it and become proletariat comrade.
Dude your gums are gonna recede you need to lighten up on the handle
I bet you have never had a cavity.
The front end fell off.
!cqs
All those micro plastics from those nylon bristles
Beyond time to replace it
That toothbrush is beat....it did you a favor breaking
I think back to TV show Reacher. The only thing he says he owns is a toothbrush. In one episode his room gets destroyed and he comes out of the bathroom with his broken toothbrush and goes “they broke my toothbrush, now I don’t own anything” with this sad puppy look.
By the looks of the bristles it was time for a new one
How hard are you pressing against your teeth...
Broken toothbrush is better than broken tooth
Damn how hard do you brush? Lol
Made me think of this classic.
This guy brushes.
Just how hard do you brush your teeth
I don't think you're supposed to brush that hard
Are your gums okay
RIP those gums
You might be brushing too hard
Damn bro, you’re brushing your teeth not barnacles off a ship. Easy!
You're brushing with aggression. You gotta brush with love.
What were you brushing?
You might be brushing too gently. Try brushing harder.
This a new feature?
OK guys, I get it. I'll brush more gentle. Yes, my gums are fine. The toothbrush was like 6mo old. And the red light isn't a heat lamp. It's just a red light bulb because I have mild dermatillomania, so the red light prevents me from picking at my skin in the mirror. Why does your toothbrush have a hinge on it?
Do you use that to like...clean the bathroom or scrub bricks or something?
the condition of that brush indicates it is about 9 years old
