That one falls under grooming, I think. He telepathically invaded her dreams before they met to make her dream about him being her protector so that she would be inclined to trust him on sight.
Comics are great! There's just, like, 50 of them that come out weekly for almost 100 years. So you're bound to get creep shit just do to how much production there is. But superhero stuff is not afraid to get weird, like having people horses or 5th dimensional imps or condiment king (that would be interesting batman porn!). So you have this weirdness that has been left over from the silver age wacko stuff and the occasional creeps just due to the extreme volume of production. The weirdness is great, though. I like that they aren't afraid to get silly. That's one of the things the MCU was missing but the new Superman movie was able to incorporate. The MCU was clearly embarrassed to be comic book movies.
IIRC, it was the other way around, at the time cousin-fucking was allowed on much of Earth but had been forbidden on Krypton, and Superman is weirdly specific about bringing that up as the reason he doesn't date her. He's fine with dating a woman from an alternate reality that looks just like her, however. The Silver Age was a deeply fucked-up time at DC.
This particular subreddit involves the discussion of text that is often quite graphic, so it would be odd if it didn't allow similar language in the comments.
I mean it's pretty normal for many teens the be crushing on older, distant relatives, because these are some of the closest figures that they have in their lives.
If the comics handled it in a good way, with him gently rejecting her for the correct reasons, it might be a good lession for young readers with unfortunate crushes.
BECAUSE WHY WOULD SHE WANT TO FUCK A HORSE?! She's asking "Will I ever find love" and it's framed like these were past boyfriends! Don't be like Mr. Hands!
She didn't. The horse wanted to fuck her. She wanted to fuck the dashing human rodeo performer Bronco Bill. She did not know that when Bill wasn't in human form, he was her horse Comet, because he didn't tell her.
Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure the one with the red hair and beard is a version of Lex Luthor, although as I remember the Supergirl he was manipulating wasnt Kara, but a shapeshifter standing in for her
Luckily the Red Haired Dude (who was Lex Luthor posing as his own Scottish Cousin or something in a younger body) actually only got it on with a weirdo goo alien who was posing as Kara for a while. Now of course, he was pretty predatory toward said goo alien...
Posing as his own Scottish cousin would have been too normal, he was posing as his own Australian son. (And goo Supergirl wasn't posing as Kara except maybe to readers, since Kara was erased in the Crisis, but that's a different story.)
So I'm not a huge comic book fan, but a lot of the stuff I read is mind blowing
I saw a video compilation of "the worst things super heroes have done" and most of them were FILLED with molesting teenage girls or outright rape. I felt sick because comic books like these are meant for young BOYS.
Not to mention, I also read about a writer wanting Wonder Woman to get raped?? Luckily, that did happen, but it was drawn I think, which is so messed up that people like that are able to write stories for kids
If you're gonna do it for awareness, that's amazing. But in most cases, it's just barely disguised fetishes
I'll tell you what I said to someone else--there are 50 comic books published every week and have been doing so for almost 100 years. That's hundreds of thousands of issues; if we include manga it might even make 1 million. You're going to get creep shit just based on volume. Most of them are not like that. But there definitely is terrible shit that later writers either retcon or completely ignore. Comics also have a rating system, many of which are 14+, and the vast majoreity (like almost 70% of comic book readers are in their late 20s-30s.) Doesn't make much better, and obviously the stuff is gross and the editor should step in more, but youtube videos like that are not giving an actual picture of the genre. It's like if I made a video of "worst things a main character has done in tv." There are just so many shows out there that you're bound to get creepy, awful things. But that doesn't make tv as a whole creepy and gross. There's just a lot of it because it's an entire medium, just like movies,, tv, songs, etc.
Comet the Super-Horse was originally a centaur from Ancient Greece mamed Biron who asked a witch to turn him into a man but was instead turned into a horse when a bad guy switched the magic potions. The witch felt bad about it, so she gave his another potion that would give him superpowers. IIRC the bad guy then also trapped him in a meteor for all eternity by the passing of Supergirl's rocket broke it open and allowed him to escape and return to Earth.
He then became infatuated with Supergirl. He telepathically invaded her dreams before they met to make her dream about him being her protector so that she would be inclined to trust him on sight. When they did meet and she realized that there was actually a horse with superpowers, she decided to make him one of the Super-Pets. He never explained to her that he was sapient or that he was sexually attracted to her before she starts straddling his bare back to go for rides. He was able to turn human for a time and dated her in his human guise without ever telling her that he had already known her as Comet.
For everyone who's asking about the horse, Casually Comics has a video explaining what that whole deal is: Supergirl Kisses Her Horse | Comet The Superhorse...Is A Liar. Long story short: yes, the horse is a creep that wants to fuck her, but no, she never realized.
... I... come the fuck on. Its fine shes struggeling to find love and yearns for that. Its a very human thing to deal with...
But come the fuck on. Have her catch herself looking a little too much at happy couples, or families enjoying a nice dinner, or feels alone on valentines day, or whatever else... its so fucking easy. It can practically write itself.
I mean, I didnt know it was a cover, so my creative difrences with a page that depicts "she lonely, looking for love", and what ways I would find more satesfying and meaningful, is what it is.
But a cover, is difrent... it showing folks who did not care for her consent, in the lineup... reguardless, is pretty tonedeaf.
I'll tell you what I mentioned to someone else--oftentimes the writer/cover artist (in this case both are Sophie Campbell) doesn't know all the lore. It's quite possible she just asked one of her editors everyone Supergirl has had a relationship with. The editors themselves may not even know sometimes; they work on multiple books at once and have to know thousands of comics, which is impossible. Their main job is making sure the project comes out on time.. But every person involved in this Supergirl run, down to the letterer, (besides J Quinones, who is a guest artist for the inside art) is a woman known for feminist work. In fact, the comicsgate crowd have been coming after this book like crazy for all the "wokeness" in it and harassing the team. This is the last issue of the run due to sales, partially because of the comicsgate crowd going insane and telling everyone not to buy it. It's good though. And other stuff Sophie has written is also very good and feminist. I very, truly, think this is a mistake of ignorance. Happens all the time. This is also Sophie's first DC work that isn't a pride issue or a single fill-in issue for Birds of Prey. So it's very likely she does not know all of Kara's lore. There have been DC and Marvel books where characters that absolutely are dead have appeared in them because the writer and editors didn't know they were dead. A lore mishap is not uncommon.
I agree that is a wrong. And apologize if I read into your c9mment too much.
People just go to internet harassment or calling for a book's cancellation pretty quickly so I wanted to get ahead of that.
And I get the defensiveness. So apolagy accepted bud. No problem.
Consider asking a few more questions, before coming to conclusions that someone is in favor of harrasment, rather than "well thats a bit yikes... anyway-". No offense of course. Just saying.
Campbell didn't draw this variant cover, Quinones did. (The default Campbell cover is Kara with Streaky agonizing about whether to go on a date with a guy or hang out with Lena.)
What makes you think the book's being canceled after February? I haven't seen anything to indicate that, and March solicits aren't out yet.
That's my bad then, when I first scrolled through solicits the variant was the one listed first, but checking AIPT it does appear that you are right. That's what I get for not using aipt first.
I read that it was going to be her last issue on a thread in r/comicbooks; I was actuality reading the thread because they stated that she had a plan for Young Avengers and I love YA. But a few people in the thread stated that she was wrapping up Supergirl due to sales. And the comicsgate attacks on the book are really obvious if you are in the online comics space.
I suppose we will find out soon in March's solicits, though
From my memory, the one with long red hair is lex luthor. Who faked his own death, but actually transferred his mind into a young Clone who inherited lex's company and fortune as alexander luthor Jr, lex's long lost son who was living in Australia.
He went on to try and gaslight all the heroes to believe he was actually a good guy. One of the only ones who fell for it was supergirl, but its not kara. The original supergirl wasn't supermans cousin, it was a shapeshifting alien named matrix who took the form of a blonde teen girl.
Early comics didnt like the idea of any kryptonians other than superman existing. He was supposed to be the last survivor of krypton.

The horse??!!!????
The horse is actually a human cursed to be a horse
It's a weird as it sounds
Sounds like classic fairy tale stuff.
Yeah the lore behind Comet the Superhorse is no weirder than a typical paranormal romance with a shifter.
It’s very Sailor Moon of them. (Or is that very Supergirl of Sailor Moon?)
Depends on who did it first, I guess
That's actually every horse
Centaur cursed to be a horse who occasionally became human when a comet was passing through his solar system.
I mean we’ve got Loki and Sleipner lore, so somehow that’s not the craziest thing I’ve read.
Wasn't he a centaur?
He is a centaur.
The thoroughbred of sin???
He’s really really bad!
Even the horse, yes.
Because that's a thing
I don't think the horse tried anything nonconsensual or violent with her
He is in love with her and tries to get with her when he as briefly human, but it's all consensual, it's just that he's ya know, a horse
That one falls under grooming, I think. He telepathically invaded her dreams before they met to make her dream about him being her protector so that she would be inclined to trust him on sight.
Hey man. I know this might be ironic considering my username. But what the fuck is up with comics for real
The Silver Age was a deeply fucked-up time. You got the inherent sexism of the writers and the enforced sexism of the Comics Code.
I think he was a human first, and thus the story is more tragic!!!
I don't think he ever told her that though.
For once the horse grooms the woman, not the other way around. Equality for all!!
More like equinity for all.
More like Equine-ity for all

my reaction too
Asking the important questions bc I was also like "wtf"
I very literally screamed exactly this as my first reaction. Thank you
I think he was in a very famous tv show back in the 90s
LITERALLY what I yelled
Happy supergirl lesbian couple.
Evil intimidating horse
DC will sooner pair her with a horse than with another woman, meanwhile Supergirl/Lena Luthor from the TV series is like the #1 F/F ship on AO3.
James Gunn, you know what to do.
If he did, that would immediately get my butt in a theater seat.
The only one I recognize is the goddamn horse 😂
As I posted on another comment, the rest are Power Boy, Lex Luthor Jr. (90's clone) and H'El.
Peter... the horse is here...
Also in the early comics Supergirl really, really wanted to bang Superman. Despite being underaged....and his cousin.
Is incest different for aliens...?
Yes, cousin marriage was common for Kryptonians
Krypton was a whole planet based on the royal family I guess
IIRC, it was the other way around, at the time cousin-fucking was allowed on much of Earth but had been forbidden on Krypton, and Superman is weirdly specific about bringing that up as the reason he doesn't date her. He's fine with dating a woman from an alternate reality that looks just like her, however. The Silver Age was a deeply fucked-up time at DC.
Also, that one author had a sh!tty f*tish concealed by a transparent curtain. Can’t forget that.
More than one, I'm sure.
Also, you don't have to censor naughty words here.
Oh thanks for letting me know! I wasn’t sure how Reddit (as a platform) moderates comments, so I figured I’d rather be safe than sorry.
This particular subreddit involves the discussion of text that is often quite graphic, so it would be odd if it didn't allow similar language in the comments.
So it just kinda depends on the sub?
~shrug~ I guess? If you look at the sidebar to the right (and you're not on mobile), every sub has got a list of that sub's rules.
You can say bad words like shitty and fetish here

Nope. Illegal on Krypton.
I'm glad that excessively verbose word bubble was there to explicitly make it clear that Kryptonians aren't cousin fuckers
I expect they retconned this one quite aggressively.
Ah yes, the good ol’ trope of the minor seducing the adult. Also how old was he at the time?
Cousin, sure, that's problematic. But like, don't most teens, male or female, want to bang the prime sex symbols of their time?
I mean it's pretty normal for many teens the be crushing on older, distant relatives, because these are some of the closest figures that they have in their lives.
If the comics handled it in a good way, with him gently rejecting her for the correct reasons, it might be a good lession for young readers with unfortunate crushes.
Buut I doubt that they did that...
...Why is she trying to find love with a Horse? WHY IS SHE TRYING TO FIND LOVE WITH A HORSE?!
The horse was a centaur cursed into becoming a horse. Still not right.
Princesses can kiss frogs, why can’t aliens bang the horse?
Hey, Aquaman's dated a dolphin before, don't be insensitive
Even kryptonians can be horse girls
*deep shudder of ick*

Don‘t worry, he wasn‘t a horse when she got with him
The title was that those characters have tried to do something to her, so why have you framed it like she’s doing something wrong?
BECAUSE WHY WOULD SHE WANT TO FUCK A HORSE?! She's asking "Will I ever find love" and it's framed like these were past boyfriends! Don't be like Mr. Hands!
She didn't. The horse wanted to fuck her. She wanted to fuck the dashing human rodeo performer Bronco Bill. She did not know that when Bill wasn't in human form, he was her horse Comet, because he didn't tell her.
Does someone know the names of those four characters? This is so I can add them to my fictional ops list.
Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure the one with the red hair and beard is a version of Lex Luthor, although as I remember the Supergirl he was manipulating wasnt Kara, but a shapeshifter standing in for her
Yep.
In more or less the only Superman comics I read, Lex Luthor looked like that.
From left to right, top to bottom: Power Boy, Lex Luthor Jr. (the Lex clone one), H'El, and Comet.
There's a fifth one in the bottom left corner, I think it's captain boomerang? Or captain boomerang jr/2.
I'll take your word for it. I looked at the February solicites and the guy is as obstructed there as he is here.
I'm mostly going of the fact that it looks like captain boomerangs current hat.
(And goo Supergirl wasn't posing as Kara except maybe to readers, since Kara was erased in the Crisis, but that's a different story.)
why are women always written as worried about love and men never are...
because the writers have no idea what a woman wants
But the writer for this run is a woman?

excellent, shall we share to this sub by link?
First : yes, in black Jimmy Olsen.
Second : why did they draw Brainiac-5 as a smugly smirking dude ? What did he do wrong (in main continuity) ?
They can’t figure out what origins or personality to do with B5.
They either make him smug and arrogant (similar to Vril dox II,) a total asshole, or native and nice.
Dear u/ihatethiscountry76, the readers agree, this man has written a woman badly!
What did the horse do?
Why does Jimmy Olsen look like he wants her skin?
And why does Brainiac 5 look like such a dick. Well, actually that one fits.
Not really. Early silver age, Batch, and Bendis B5 wasn’t a dick. It was after Crisis that they turned him into one and Zero hour/2.0 crisis
Instead of... this.
This is a Valentine's variant cover. It's meant to be goofy and mostly unrelated to the actual book.
I'm pretty sure they could be goofy, while removing the folks who tried to assult her.
Of course they could and should have. It sounded like you were criticizing the unsubtlety/cheesiness of the cover's writing in general.
Thats all.
Never said it wasnt out of wrong done out of ignorance. Just think it was a wrong, reguardless.
I never said we should treat the author, or artist, like witches to be burned. Just that this was a fuck up, and aint a great look.
You might be applying way more to my statement than I think is nessesary here bud.
Well, killing is more forgivable in fiction. So many of the most popular ships in fandom are between people who keep trying to kill each other.
My point is that if they do this again but for Superman, including Lex Luthor on the cover is necessary. It must happen.
Is that Ganondorf?
I’m sorry even Jimmy??
That was my response too. Like goody two-shoes Jimmy?!
I think OP said the circled characters were the bad ones, not the whole panel.
THE HORSE?!
He was supposed to be the last survivor of krypton.

bojack at it again :/
THE HORSE
Awesome superheroine
Evil and intimidating horse
Shades of Avengers #200 where they celebrate rape.
I mean, trying to kill her is like, an incentive if anything... Enemies to lover is a VERY popular trope
Supergirl is far better as a lesbian.
I agree that the choice of characters is fucked. But...this was written by a woman. Idk if it fits the sub.
