The diamond is end product cut, the coal is a lump taken out of the ground. Significant money and energy went into turning it from an ugly albeit sparkling rock into what you see there. I'll leave the metaphorical ruminations on that to the reader.
You can't compare this. Graphite always will turn to diamond under pressure. How does a human do depends on own resilience. They can either endure, or get scarred, or off ownself.

You can keep yourself as coal, which has inherit value as a resource with many purposes.
Or you can fold under pressure and become diamond, who's value is entirely limited to aesthetics and the handful of hyper-specific jobs that a diamond is useful for- Of which, lab-grown diamonds are both cheaper and better anyways.

because of common knowledge, when people talk about diamonds, most of the time they mean natural one, and if you say to someone something about diamonds, without specifying, they will assume that you talk about natural one, as it is default one
heck I would bet that most people don't even know that you can mass produce diamonds in the lab
It's sort of like when Americans say "gas", they mean petrol, even thought using term gas for this is wrong, because gas it's completely different thing, so then they talk about fuel gases, like one that you might have in your kitchen, they also will specify as "natural gas", but in other countries like here in Ukraine, if you say gas, it by default means natural gas, but also basically means any fuel gases, so if you talk about propane as a fuel, you can use gas, but if you talk about production of propane than using gas will be wrong
In short languages are stupid, and diamond means natural diamond, until you specifically say it's not
Also I'm pretty sure in production of synthetic diamonds, no one actually uses coal, because it could have more impurities and can be used as fuel by it self, so they graphite or chemically obtained pure carbon, so it would be also wrong to generalize that synthetic diamonds are made from coal
