I asked one of the architects about this on a tour a few months ago and she gave me a quite convoluted answer but yes, the train tracks is the main takeaway.
Honestly if the double M symbol was part of the branding for the entire Metro system, I wouldn't be upset at all. I think it's a fairly well designed symbol and the use of it in the new stations is pretty cool too.
Not quite. It's a little known fact that the metro tunnel actually does a barrel roll between each station. The logo was designed so it appears the same whether you're upside down or right way up. It's a pretty cool feature!
A, why is it called a metro system? B, why do public entities need branding. The cheap Vline tickets have proved that all PT needs is no ticketing and everyone will use it. I don’t need branding in any of my public services. The neoliberal branding of stuff doesn’t make it better, just turns it into private profit. I definitely want my built environment to be aesthetically stimulating, but I definitely don’t consider branding to have any aesthetic value.
Public entities don’t need branding necessarily, but an identity for them is good for employees and the public, branding being a part of that. Countries don’t need flags, the state govt doesn’t need a logo, but it helps with recognition and makes it feel like you’re dealing with a personable, reasonable entity
I hear ya, but I was referring to privatised companies. I’m proud of the work CISRO does and regardless of how much the new BOM app costed, heaps of us rely on it. Pretty pissed off about how liberals on both sides of the floor have privatised everything.
Yes symbols mean things, my shire has become chronic in flying the Australian ensign. My neighbours let the flag touch the ground and have no respect. Personally I don’t like the flag because of the Union Jack. I’m 5rh gen Victorian and at least half the family isn’t‘British’.
You do make a decent point, which is correct.
I’m more of a treaty kind of Australian. My mob fought at Eureka against the Crown.
I call it 'the Metro' because that's what the trains say on the side. I live on a Vline line, so there's always been a degree of separation between the two for me.
You're putting words in my mouth with your second question though. I didn't say that public entities need branding. My comment is just about a hypothetical branding change, you read too deep into it.
Because the Murdock media, liberals and Australians love bagging out the ALP. It’s bloody beautiful mate- regardless of the symbolism. Moreland station is gold but south siders hate paying taxes, especially when it funds the Norf. People who don’t respect beautiful things, can keep their head up their arse.

The political stuff was brought up by him not me, 'Howard's governance' is him bringing it up I was clearly stating that between the years I mentioned we sold off a fair amount of public services, the corporations that purchased them had a interest for 'profit' and also knew the Australian people recognised the insert 'brand name here'
A. It isn't called a metro system. The brand is "Metro" and the tunnel is called the "Metro Tunnel" but the system isn't referred to anywhere as "a metro".
B. VLine is a brand and is completely government operated.
Hell, go back to the days of Metlink which was fully government operated. Metlink is a brand.
Even Sydney Trains is a brand.
I can't actually think of a public transport system that doesn't have some form of branding.
Yeah, the symbol having 7 segments, represents 7 degrees of separation across the 7 major figureheads in his cult. Basically symbolic of a brotherhood or as some know it the Bratva and Russian influence. /s
literally my first thought too! xD
a mash up between fallout and skyrim, looks like they created a new thieves guild shadowmark in the vault-tec colour scheme.
I guess the architects can claim that it’s supposed to be an M & M, but anyone with vision and a rudimentary understanding of the alphabet can tell you that it isn’t.

Today it’s recognised as the Melbourne Metro symbol, although that’s not how it started. mid-1950s, Vic railways introduced a compliance mark for platform mounted equipment after repeated loosening and misalignment issues. Higher testing standards were required at the time so components that passed the higher vibration/torque test at Newport were tagged K-M for the supplier, Kellam & Muir, and fitted with a bright insert so inspectors could verify it just by looking at it. The approvals ran through a small interdepartmental working group (vic rail, public works and the police) set up for major events. Engineers nicknamed it the Meridian Group, mostly because the meeting were not publicly announced, often late or after hours and left minimal paper. Over the years though, it’s been recognised that the group was often responsible for monitoring overcrowding, providing additional conduit capacities for temporary cabling and provision of ancillary devices which to date, no one really can confirm what that was for. The group’s operation is not really publicly known and finding documents is nearly impossible. The mark outlived the committee.
I used to work on the railway many years ago and an overwhelming proportion of prefabricated electrical assemblies installed throughout the network are Westinghouse branded. The top of the symbol is a dead ringer and the m could be Melbourne, Metro or just a red herring in a new logo.
What does the equipment seem to be for? I think I'm seeing a lamp, a speaker and at least one camera (probably at least one more on the other side. The logo could also just be an eye snare to allow ai/detective orperated cameras a better perspective on faces upon analysis of footage.
“Toured the metro tunnel, really impressive”… yea alright pal, the metro tunnels are dog water for the amount of time and money that went into it. The metro tunnels are finally done yet, there are bus replacements every waking moment still

The stations are really impressive. Would love to see them during peak. Melbourne finally has a grown up world class subway
Naaaah it doesn't, not really. After being in Europe for a month, we still have a baby system.
Melbourne Wetro when the pumps fail.
Maybe it will backup the desal, god forbid that Melbourne has to have water restrictions, like the rest of Victoria.
That's hilarious, we were obviously going way too deep.
It also looks a bit like two tracks and a set of points
Great point could possibly be that.
I asked one of the architects about this on a tour a few months ago and she gave me a quite convoluted answer but yes, the train tracks is the main takeaway.
Probably something like, tracks going into the distance (like in perspective).
A rail tunnel (the circle) with tracks going into the distance, or a train passing through the circle.
A whole bunch of train, track and tunnel references, and none of them at the same time, but also two letter Ms
Sigmund Freud would be all over this.
Also resembles a pantograph.
That's what they want you to think. As you head underground. Every day. Deep ungerground. Into their clutches....
Rise up! Land for landwalkers!
Enough brother! You know the committee wants this kept quiet.
It's now out in the open
That evil Dan Andrews !!! The tyrant !!!!

LOL!
Do you remember when there were people saying that covid was a hoax and that it was so we could go get the children that were being held underground 😂
Imagine downvoting me for mentioning some cooker conspiracy theory Jesus 😂
Didn't they move them around using tunnels similar to the one that links the two service stations at the base of the Westgate?
Lol only the cooker who made it up knows.

I like the ensign. The UK flag alone looks weird to me haha

Downside? Public services get sold off privately once branding has stability
Go look at how many public services were sold of between 1990 and 2005. Private is profit.
I'm sure Hamilton Island just got sold to the u.s, not saying that was public but it's the same game no more Australian and the profits get off shored
You think public services get sold because of branding? Thats such a weird take.
Public services get sold because neoliberal scumbags in power sell them off to pay for tax cuts for their mega donors… see all of Howard’s governance.
Cool story so these company's were worthless and had no backing (profit) or recognition (branding). Not getting in to your political bs
I mean, the political BS is coming from you, blaming branding on ... Political BS.
Forget that guys ravings about neoliberals (I mean he IS right but whatever) it's crazy hating on branding for it.

Great idea, didn't even know they had a sub.
Yeah, you could have had your answer within about 6 replies. They know everything Melbourne + trains.

Look up "Skyrim thieves guild shadow marks" this looks like it could belong with those symbols.
thieves guild shadowmarks on the elder scrolls wiki
First time I saw it I thought it was the sign for the toilets because it looks like W & M.
Apparently it’s an unofficial logo for Melbourne Metro that was designed by the architect and is supposed to look like M & M.
It's everywhere so it makes sense.
I guess the architects can claim that it’s supposed to be an M & M, but anyone with vision and a rudimentary understanding of the alphabet can tell you that it isn’t.

Superb, big thanks. I've showed the others and we really went down a different route.
Cave Clan
That’s the best response I’ve read. Pretty sure heaps of clave clan are now doctors of town planning, or civil engineering.
No I’ve never been associated or know anything about cave clan. Who am I kidding, obviously been on an asio watch list for over 30 years.
Stumble across some of their clips on YT and had a laugh at them critiquing some poorly implemented alterations to sections of tunnel.
Now there’s a group I haven’t heard of in a long time. Knew some folks amongst them. But of fun twenty odd years ago
A series of new emblems used as decorations in the metro tunnel. Watched an YouTube video by metro and the video talked all bout the small design details

Martin Marine Construction has the same symbol. You can find them on bookface with the same symbol.
Retaining walls is something they do.
I'm yet to take a look at the new tunnels. Great photo which station is this? Loads of natural light, love the wood.
This was the outside on Anzac station waiting at the tram interchange. Some great elements including a very large ceramic art work in one of them
