  • Hell yea it's game time baby

I think I’m going to do it 😀

    Do it!

That just maybe all the encouragement I need 😄

You absolutely should. Great way to start the new year/finish this one, and what have you got to lose?

Broski, I found the library, didn’t know where to go, very overwhelming these things. I will try again next week haha 😝

No don't leave! Ask around! I'm sure somebody will be happy to point out to you where to go where all your new friends await!

    Message OP!

Hi Ninski0011, apologies I didn't see this until very late, no worries I understand large events can be quite intimidating. But just to help you with this question, please feel free to come to Community Room 1 & 2.

So when you enter the library take a left and then keep walking deep into the library and you'll see a large room on your right filled with people playing board games.

If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to ask a friendly library staff and they'll guide you in!

I'll usually be there in the main room and I try my best to welcome anyone who is new and get them into a board game. Because I think spectating is boring. And I completely understand coming into a room full of people playing board games can be quite intimidating! But if anything, please feel free to ask for Seabrook and someone will come along to find me to help you out and welcome you!

    No problems, much appreciated :)

    YES!

Hopefully I can come one day this year. Just need a little bit more courage.

You can do it! I'm biased as I run the event, but I think the club has a very warm, welcoming atmosphere and we try our best to greet everyone that comes in and help them go into a game! Thanks for your courage Pretty-Olive5731 and please feel free to message me and I would love to assist if I can help in any way!

It is game time indeed! It was awesome as a final event of the year had 61 people and played so many games blood on the clocktower, Mahjong, Wingspan, Deception Murder in Hong Kong, Wonderlands War and so many others!

    Awesome! Any new members?

  • Hello, my name is Seabrook and every Sunday, I hold a free community board game group at my local library Knox Library in Wantirna South including tomorrow Sunday 28th December 2025 12PM-4:30PM.

    Q: I'm interested, how do I attend?
We have a poll in the announcements channel in the discord here: https://discord.gg/j9h22MxYf2
However, this is optional and to give us a general idea of attendance. To attend, there is no mandatory registration, just turn up to the Knox Library on any Sunday (we run every Sunday no exceptions) 12pm-4:30pm we are in Community Room 1&2 and will gladly welcome you in to play some board games together!

Q: What is this, what do you do at a board game club?
So we play lots of different board games, mainly modern board games such as Catan, Cosmic Encounter, Slay the Spire the Board Game, Brass Birmingham, Deception, Carcassone, Blood on the Clocktower. As part of the event, we play board games together as a fun and interactive way to make friends and socialise!

We always try our very best to create a welcoming atmosphere and to personally welcome in everyone who walks in the door and to make sure they have a board game to play. Because I think it's boring to spectate and it's most fun to be part of a game.

No board game experience is needed, we always teach the rules to every game we play so please don't worry it is a very friendly environment for anyone to join!

I made this club to make friends with others and found that other people also wanted to do the same so I hope to continue running this club to make people's weekends just a little bit better!

  • Some commonly asked questions:

Q: Do people give their consent to have their photos taken?
    >> Yes I always ask for consent before taking any photo, which is why you'll see some people do not appear in photos as they choose to leave the photo while it is being taken.

Q: Are you going to post the same thing every week?
    >> I apologise for the frustration if you have seen this post before, but I have contacted the mods directly to ask whether this is okay and they have confirmed it is okay to post once a week.

Q: How do I build my own community social group from scratch?
    >> Great question, every community can always use more places for people to connect and socialise! I started this board game club by advertising on Facebook and Meetup (expensive $45/month now don't recommend) that there was a board game event at the library to make friends. Once the group grew in size I contacted the library staff to see if it was possible to run a public free community group and to use the library facilities. And we are very fortunate for the amazing support we have received from the library to be able to use the facilities without any costs weekly thanks to the kindness of the Knox Library.

Thus, my advice is if you are looking to hold a community group please try to contact your local library/RSL as these are public spaces. Also, advertising, I've had the most success with creating a discord server and advertising primarily on local Facebook community groups and Reddit here on r/melbourne , Eventbrite. Try to advertise wherever you can. We've also handed out flyers to local board game stores such as Games World inside shopping centers.

I hope this information helps and please feel free to ask if you have any questions.

I love seeing the post each week! Eventually I will remember to go

  • I’m just waiting to have a Sunday off work so I can attend, I unfortunately always seem to be working on Sundays 😂

  • Hope you keep running these, I’ll definitely be joining you guys soon 🥰

Thanks Ana-Kalisa! Yes we'll keep running these and have no plans to stop! We're on every Sunday 12pm-4:30pm in the Knox Library Level 3 inside the Westfield shopping center in Community Room 1&2 in the library!

  • We play board games with friends all the time. Wish we had a venue to branch this out into a bigger social thing - we are in the northern suburbs

I recommend reaching out to any local libraries and RSLs to ask or even just to start a facebook event in the library and posting on your local community facebook groups for people to join! Also there are quite a few groups in North Melbourne which might be similar to what you are looking for:
Groups in North Melbourne (Please check out all the board game cafes in the CBD as they have regular events and scheduled)

    • Fortress Melbourne - Every week Wednesday from 6pm-10pm their events are listed on their website
    • Coburg Boardgamers - Every week Sunday 10am at the Gaming Arena they have a facebook group
    • Melbourne Asian Board Gamers - Every week Tuesday at Marche
    • Richmond Board Games - Every week Saturday they have a facebook and aftergame page.
    • Incubator Melbourne - Every month location moves about check the facebook page.
    • NSEG - Every second Sunday in Thornbury they have a facebook page
    • We Play Games - every second Wednesday
    • Melbourne Board Games & Social Nights Northcote the Peacock Inn - once a month on thursdays they have a meetup group
  • That's awesome that you run this! Keep it up 💪🏻

  • What is the game being played in the last pic?

Thanks for the question! That's Cyclades deluxe edition, it's an area control board game where you all bid on using the powers of different greek gods to create sprawling cities to win the game!

  • I'm in Glen Waverley and always see these posts. Looks great. Might come past soon. Any age restrictions ?

Thanks for the question and your kindness West_Description_472! Would love to welcome you and play some board games together! no age restrictions, unless attendees are under 13 in which case they need to supervised by a parental guardian.

  • I didn't recognise any of those games.

There's some eclectic ones to be sure. Looks like most of the images have the box lids visible, so if you can spot the name, look it up on Board Game Geek to find out more!

I'd rather play something more mainstream to be honest. It's a great initiative but the games themselves put me off

what board games do you count as 'mainstream'? in board game circles i feel like codenames, catan, secret hitler etc. are all pretty popular, and they surely have other 'mainstream' games else than the ones shown here... even then, plenty of good board games that are quite easy to pick up and have a good time with as long as you give it a shot :)

As someone who has been in some of these photos - can confirm that you are right!

Cluedo, monopoly etc. I mean I guess the whole point of the game meetup is to socialise right?

A wide variety of games get played! From complex to party style games, you can almost always find a group playing something that matches the vibe of what you are looking for

  • Do you guys have Pavé? I'm looking for places that have a copy so I don't have to bring my own.

Thanks for the question Alarming_Manager_332, apologies best of my knowledge I don't think anyone at the club owns Pave. But if you're interested, please feel free to bring it along and we'll be able to find people for you to play it with! We always encourage people to bring their favourite board games to share and play with others!
