• All the people I see constantly on holiday don't have kids...maybe kids are the issue.

no house and no kids so yeah all my money goes to vacations

but if i was better at saving maybe i’d have a house

I have no kids and no vacations but I have a house! It seems like you mostly just get to pick one. Especially if you buy a moneypit like I did

I have no kids and no vacations and no house, but I do have medical debt! American healthcare is like that, though.

Dang I'm sorry your funds have to go toward medical debt. Healthcare here sucks. It's expensive and not even that good

I have a kid, note: a kid. Not multiple. I travel a few times a year, mostly cause we save.

Why can't I have no kids and three money?

  • Working in an office where the salary scale is nonnegotiable, entirely set by the number of years you’ve worked there, I always wonder the same.

Some people here take multiple vacations (including some international) per year. Others seem to basically never leave the city in which we’re located.

Since we all make the same amount, it’s interesting to see how different people choose to spend it.

    spouses with kickass jobs

  • Lots of people also just make a lot of money

  • They probably make way more money than you.

I think its pretty obvious by the context here that he is referring to people within is social/economic circle

Reddit struggles to grasp the idea that not everybody is poor

  • Depending on where you go vacations can be almost as cheap as staying at home.

And if you're smart with leveraging rewards/cash back with decent credit. I haven't paid for a flight (past the stupid taxes that can't be paid in rewards points) in years.

Literially that makes no sense. You’re still paying for the lodging, not to mention airfare or gas to get there.

I did a 3 day (2 nights) trip to Vegas a couple years ago and spent like $250 total. Flight was like $89 total. I got the rooms for free by playing a vegas app game. Resort fees were like $50 per night. I ate cheap food, like ellis Island bbq. Did stuff like site seeing and going to the pool. $250 is more than I'd spend for a normal weekend, but not THAT much more

Airfare can be like 50 USD to one side. Lodging can also be cheap. And then you count in food which offsets what you would pay home vs there and then you see how it makes sense.

but still not the same as staying home unless you uber everywhere and get door dash every day.

That’s not accounting for the time spent away from working

Ooh I'd be curious to know more.

Go to a poor country and your meals will be like $2

Tunisia. Taxi's across the capital from one side to the other is going to run you around $10. My taxi rides to work in the mornings were 12-13 minutes, and my fare was about $1.25. Commute back was about 20-25 because of traffic and was about $2.25. You can get some of their cheaper street food and feed two people and it would cost about $3. Miss that country so much.

  • It’s not some great mystery, just have a decent career and take advantage of credit card perks.

  • Like those people that go to Disney every year…what on earth.

  • People only post their fun stuff, they don’t post the daily stuff. Now the reality for me, I happen to be on vacation all the time from other people’s perspective. It is just me and my wife. We make $25/hr in Indinapolis about 30hrs/ week. I paid off my house so no mortgage. 2 reliable-ish cars paid off. I have been very frugal with my money in the past and am now starting to spend more healthy. Even still, many times we travel, we keep expenses low. Right now, I’m in NYC. We stayed at a simple airbnb in queens rather than a hotel in manhattan. We drove instead of fly. Tale the subway everywhere, not paying for parking ooph. We enjoyed Times Square. Went to lion king, side mez instead of orch seats. But otherwise just looked around and took pics.

Anyway, I don’t know how other people spend money, but I feel like we are on the low end.

I can say No Kids, Dual income, no mortgage helps.

  • I used to work at a bank and would look through my customers accounts when they complained about not having any money. Spending $15 a day for coffee or fast food equals $5,475 a year. You can take a nice vacation every year if you prioritize it.

  • Both can be true lol

  • I was on holiday once and a girl on a lounger next to me by the pool was reading a book called How to be more Financially Responsible. I obviously don’t know the situation but it did give me a little chuckle.

if you had more disposable income what else would you spend it on other than enjoying life

  • Depending on the person yes. I'm sure some of them pull it off fine, others probably are in massive loads of debt

  • My last vacation: 1998

  • It's probably one holiday and they spread the pictures across the year

  • Usually, it’s them.

  • I used to study in Japan (graduated 2012) and people keep asking me how often I go back to Japan to travel. I keep wondering how the fuck do they think I can afford spending minimum 10k just to travel to Japan for funsies. That amount can cover 3 months of my house's mortgage!

  • Camping can cost next to nothing, if day of week/time of year don't matter to you, you can snag hotels and flights for very cheap. Outside of that you gotta hope you have relatives for free room and board.

Camping can cost next to nothing after the pretty substantial up front costs lol

All depends on how comfortable you want to be.

Idk what y'all are doing for camping, but at the core of it all I ever needed was a tent, sleeping bag and a cooler.

That's less than a plane ticket for 1 if you are being frugal

People who do that kind of camping are the kind of people who can sleep anywhere and wake up refreshed. Past a certain age, very few derive pleasure from that.

  • Been a long time since I took a vacation

I took a five day vacation in 2003 after my son was stillborn. It was terrible. You aren't missing much.

  • Well I got a friend who does this…. The catch; he’s got no savings. He’s one bad decision away from ending up homeless

  • My aunt takes soo many luxurious vacations and has always been in debt, so she is winning in my book

  • My wife gets great deals on vacations. Wait for flight and hotel deals.

  • I spent more money on vacation than my mortgage this year. So it's us travelers.

  • I feel like both things can be true. I take more vacations than my coworkers (who make equal money to me), but I also have more money than them because I'm smarter with my money than they are

  • I think it's more like, Bills are paid, food is on the table. Fuck saving.

  • Viggie Smalls studiously avoiding that it's option #3

  • I have this thought literally every day. I can only assume most people have a lot of debt. We have none.

  • A couple years ago our kids elementary school stopped charging for after school care. We put that 1600 bucks a month into a special vacation fund. We take a lot of vacations now.
