I have a Medelita white coat that I think is really a nice coat. I never wore it at my old job but I’m starting a new one and it seems like everyone else wears a coat so it’s probably time to invest in another one. Unfortunately Medelita seems to be going out of business or just has no inventory. I’ve tried a few other coats from Figs and Fabletics and hated how they look and how cheap they feel. Is there another company that makes a more premium style mens white coat?

  • I still like looking like a doctor, and having a really nice white coat. Check out shaia medical. Their "heritage" white coat is not at all cheap but is extremely well-made, fits really well, has all kinds of really nice features. I've been wearing those coats for 15 years or so. Honestly, there's a big difference between putting on some shitty garbage bag white coat like lab techs wear, and a tailored heavy white coat that looks like only a doctor would wear.

Thank you for being one of the helpful ones. I’ll check it out

Wow this is really nice. Thank you

I've been looking for this style for a long time! Thanks for sharing

300 bucks for a white coat that I’m going to spill coffee or get blood on is…something

That was my thought as well. It’s a really nice coat but probably not meant for someone who works in a hospital. If I ever switch to concierge medicine though I know where to get my coat

  • All of the posters dumping on white coats probably look like their patients’ expectations of a doctor. I have found white coats to be an important signal for doctors who might not otherwise fit their patients’ expectations.

To piggyback on this, I do fit most patient’s stereotypical expectations of “what a doctor looks like,”yet I STILL find I have better interactions when I wear my white coat. I am treated with more respect and told “thank you doctor” much more frequently.

There was also a paper in one of the JAMA journals that compared patient perceptions of white coat vs pattagucci and white coat won by a long shot. So it’s evidence based.

I’m not sure I really want to be identified… 🤣

Well, you have to see patients at some point, no?

Someone has to whack their tendons I suppose

Vascular neuro likely has too many consults. Including q15min curbsides from every hospitalist in the system. It helps to fly under the radar in neurology.

100% this. It’s a role clarifier. And don’t tell me those gross Patagonia fleeces are any cleaner than my white coats which I wash after every other clinic.

    Edit: spelling

I probably fit into the expectation category and have gotten away with wearing scrubs for a long time. I took a job with a private group though and want to look nice. At least for the beginning

  • I still wear a coat too - I don’t know how the other people in this thread carry shit. I need the sizable coat pockets for my list, patient notecards, phone, pens, chapstick and steth.

  • Medelita was bought by caresmatic brands which owns a bunch of scrubs brands and has definitely cheapened the quality of the coats. A couple years ago I was able to compare an older and newer coat and could easily see the changes in material and construction knocked it a step below premium quality

I don't think it's going out of business though. They just had the black Friday sale and if it's like last year, the stock will be replenished at some point

Thanks. My coat is about 7 years old and probably only wore it a handful of times. I’ll likely go back to no coat at some point but everyone here wears them so I’ll probably conform. Just don’t want to have to wash the same coat every week.

It also really depends; I like their Laennec coat for the longer length and that one is frequently out of stock. Looks like several of the others are currently in stock in a variety of sizes, though. I've also had luck in the past looking on places like eBay for NOS coats when the Laennec was OOS continuously for like 6 months.

  • eBay has new Medelita being sold right now.

Some eBay vendors specialize in buying final stock in bulk from companies going out of business.

Discovered this when my favorite clothes catalogues went out of business. Make sure the vendor specifies that it is NEW. I got lucky and all of the clothes I ordered came new in original company package.

If eBay has your size, stock up enough to last you a decade or 2!

Be honest. Did you buy them all and trying to get me to buy your stock? Jk. Thanks for the tip

  • You could try going to your local hospital and checking their uniform store. At my hospital, you don’t have to be an employee to browse, and they have stock in various brands so you might find something you like

  • just ditch the coat. you don’t have copy those other goobers

  • Aren’t you concerned about being mistaken for a NP

    Okay this was funny.

I make myself laugh and mom says that’s all that matters

As NPs we are smart enough to wear Arcteryx or Patagonia fleece vests/jackets.

  • Just also wanted to give a huge thumbs up for the Medelita white lab coat. It's so much nicer than almost everything else on the market.

  • May I suggest an Arc'teryx delta hoodie?

  • Landau Twill Lab coat. It’s thick and heavy, but has weird cloth buttons.

  • There’s a menswear store in Birmingham, AL that sells very nice cotton white coats with knotted buttons. They are almost like a tailored garment. DM if you’re interested in more details.

  • Weird how I haven't worn a white coat since medical school year 3 and still have referrals and booked surgeries coming out the wazoo. It's almost as if the patients just appreciate being treated like a human being and sparing all the pretenses.

Weird that you felt the need to tell us for sure

  • okay bud. if the "premium" white coat makes you a better doctor. by all means...

You already got downvoted the first time so had to come back for more? It’s just a simple question about clothing. Be gone troll

says a lot that you care about reddit "downvotes." typical "premium" white coat mentality.

Pal you’re the one on here making multiple posts caring about what another man wears to work while bragging about yours referrals. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks. Enjoy being blocked now

someone's touchy this saturday morning. pfft. didnt know it was so easy to get under people's "premium" white coats
