Nothing they could've done, and staying on the plane would just put them at risk too. Planes, believe it or not, aren't designed to function with parachutes wrapped around their wings. These planes are almost certainly designed with side safety margins for this kind of thing, but it's absolutely a terrible idea to test the limits of those design fail-safes with your life.
Seems heartless, but just like putting on your own oxygen mask in an airplane before your child, sometimes the seemingly more selfish act is the best way to maximize safety for everyone.
Looks like the two guys were positioning themselves to jump with a third when one of them slipped and flew into the other. That's when things went wrong, so "everyone back in the plane" was not an option lol
But hey, I could be wrong. I don't skydive. I just think it makes sense to bail from a plane with a parachute wrapped around the wing
Seems like crowding the exit door with another jumper in the way is profoundly stupid, especially with a loose(?) chute. Iâve never been skydiving, but it seems like a sure way for dumb shit to happen.
It's not an unreasonable assumption considering some people are completely unhinged. But Australia in particular is well known for having lethal animals everywhere.
If the shooting had happened elsewhere and someone made that comment I would've jumped to the same conclusion as you.
You can see the leg hitting the wing; if it werenât for the suit, it probably would have been torn off. I canât see clearly whether the other one was hit as well, but one is definitely broken.
Ohhhhhhh my god youâre right, looks like the fucking shin too. Iâve done the old skateboard to the shin, I have large tattoos on the front of both my shins, and I canât even imagine the pain once the adrenaline wears off. Good god
Edit: according to CNN the skydiver had minor injuries but the plane tails stabilizer suffered âsubstantial damageâ and the pilot was ready to bail with his own shoot if it broke off. Dude must have been diligent with leg day. article
I donât know how you could really avoid travelling around cars, even if you decided to never drive one. But I can easily avoid skydiving. The fact that I have to live with one big risk doesnât mean I should take on additional risks as a hobby.
lol very true. But even if I parachute from a plane to get to the grocery, Iâll have to walk through a parking lot where cars are driving. And none of the groceries near me have an airfield, so I think Id be shit out of luck for the return trip.
Maybe if I moved into the wilderness and hunted for food I could avoid cars, but knowing my luck the state would start building a highway through my land or something.
Sure, there's no real avoiding cars but if you're walking around outside your risk is a baseline 3 because of them. If you're jumping out of a plane, your risk drops down to 1. Seems like a safer hobby than jogging.
Well, you have to transport by road to and from the airfield, right? So itâs the risk of road travel plus the risk of skydiving, unless youâre already traveling to the airfield for some other necessity. So it wouldnât be a net safety gain for most people.
Heard of a similar incident at Army Airborne School. When passing the static line prior to jumping, it wrapped around a jumper's arm and caused him to be knocked against the c130 a few times until the jump master cut it - requiring the jumper to deploy their reserve. So, this brought into focus the priority to make sure you passed your static line properly.
God, you can see the damage to the horizontal stabilizer when it comes in for a landing. That guy may have very well broke a leg on impact. What a shit scenario, as it looks like the jumper had a hard landing as well.
Notifying the pilot that someone is hooked on to the tail of the plane is not a smart thing to do in this situation? Perhaps they could adjust their flight schedule or maybe not land right away and drag him across the runway?
Maybe the other people could wait and see if he actually detaches from the plane so they can jump down and try to grab him and share their parachute?
What other stupid questions do you have for me? And before you answer, I was airborne in the army for five years.

Everyone who watched it did, whats the question? He has a chute and was just knocked off, it isn't like he was bodied and unconscious or fell out without a parachute.
Other dudes were like..."later'
I think they had some justifiable concern about the plane's ability to land safely at that moment.
not like they could have helped either

The show must go on đ
Who needs friends like that
I would never be happier to have hit the ground that hard after that.
I mean.. I think that depends on how you hit the ground
With two broken legs đ

Correct, according to the news report it was his reserve which got stuck
You're saying you wouldn't be scared if you were in that situation?
I so who fucked up here?
The pull tab for his reserve got stuck on the plane causing it to open up before jumping
Seems like crowding the exit door with another jumper in the way is profoundly stupid, especially with a loose(?) chute. Iâve never been skydiving, but it seems like a sure way for dumb shit to happen.
Bro got package of "swing + skydiving"
Had to be Australia ! Everything there just wants to kill you

Too soon? I don't think that was directed at the shooting in the slightest. But if it was I guess you got a point.
That was unfair of me. I'll delete that comment.

They'd be falling upwards if it was Australia
It damaged the plane...
Most definitely, huge mistake
Reason #109 why jumping out of planes is a bad idea.

Perhaps, according to the media, a broken leg is just a minor inconvenience.

I was thinking it looked like it snapped when I scrubbed through the video! I want an interview with this guy
Just billowing of his trouser leg around his leg, I'd think. Will be a massive bruise, though, quite possibly a cut requiring stitches.
âŚ. and THIS is why I donât go skydiving.
But still travel by or around cars.
Yes. Let us all know when youâre parachuting into the grocery store đ
Where I come from, they call what you said a kill-all argument. It's a slur, if you're wondering.
Oh no.
I donât know how you could really avoid travelling around cars, even if you decided to never drive one. But I can easily avoid skydiving. The fact that I have to live with one big risk doesnât mean I should take on additional risks as a hobby.
One way to remove that risk is to travel where cars can't go.
You can't get killed by a car if you're falling out of a plane.

Lucky. Very lucky.

Yeah, that would probably be my last jump if I was ANY one of those people haha!
The best part about skydiving is that you never have to do it
Why I will never aspire to do this
Airborne! Towed jumper, emergency procedures, and survived.
The pilot: just what the fuck are you doing back there, you fuckers?
Maybe he can try his luck again on the next jump, playing air roulette is fun until you break all your bones and organs.
"luckily, with the support from your friends... Oh, seems they have left"!
Tbf what are his friends gonna do

Hook line & sinker
Man if either one of them were to get hit unconscious, this would have been bad.
That should be his last just, guessing!

I assume the guy who got sucked backwards at the start had a parachute on, I just didn't have time to see it?
Won't do that again lol
Dude in green: shakes head look at this idiot. Anyway, bye!
If I recall correctly they have the primary suit plus two reserve ones? So this is not as bad as it looks.
Nope
That person cannot say they didn't get their money's worth! That's how it goes when you skydive down under đ
Don't turn back in the middle of the way...
Now or never!!
Causal walkers: why is it raining shit?
They should ask the pilot to stop and fix the parachute,lol..
So the guy sees the problem. Points at him and encourages everyone to jump? Doesnât notify the pilot? What am I missing here?
Tell us what you think the Pilot could do to help. Tell us what you think everyone else waiting in the plane could do to help
The pilot, as the captain of the flight, should leverage their authority and go back there and give everyone a stern talking to.

Jump down and grab him? Do you think this is mission impossible? Look at the speed in which they are leaving the plane. He is hooked on to the flap.
They are at jump altitude. You think the pilot was about to land?
Crazy that you were an airborne infantry and you have these suggestions. I donât believe it

consider whether your energy is worth it.
Did no one else see the guy that got knocked off?
