    So I'm going to go out on a limb here (pun intended) and say this is the same tree.

    This appears to be a willow, and willow is as willow does. Which is to say - willow thives on vegetative reproduction. It appears a branch fell from the larger tree, and where it made contact with the ground, spawned a genetically identical clone directly from the fallen branch.

    Not sure if that counts as inosculation or not though.
