Planted the tree in Spring 2022.

I’ve read all the articles about what conditions are needed for the leaves to change and that doesn’t seem to be an issue. It’s a native tree.

There is a native habitat map and a sample of the leaf color here:

  • You've received great info in regards to geographic expectations already, so I'd like to add that while I'm really delighted to see sign that your tree has been planted properly (a huge advantage for an urban tree lifespan), you need to be aware that artificial lighting, especially if they emit in the red to infrared range, can be damaging to trees because it interferes with dormancy cycles (pdf; see pg 3, 'Effect of Night Lighting on Trees), among other problems. Here's another short article on this from Cornell Univ. Ext.

Please see this wiki for other critical planting/care tips and errors to avoid; there's sections on watering, pruning and more that I hope will be useful to you.

  • As someone who lived in Dallas for a decade… foliage in North TX really isn’t a thing. The temperature change from summer to winter is too abrupt with barely any cool down period in between to allow trees to slowly lose their leaves. I saw foliage maybe once in the 8 years I lived there

    Thanks for the info

This year we actually had an extended period of cold nights and warm days. It was the first “fall” I’ve experienced here since 2017. I had high hopes but I guess if it ever happens it will be something to celebrate

Genetics could also play a role. It may have been grown from seed harvested far south of where it's currently growing.

  • Could still be establishing, could be stress, could be poorly grown in nursery, could be from a source outside of DFW with different climate, could be weather...
