I like making technical lyrics and entendres and stuff but I can't write deep for the life of me, how do you guys approach it

  • What does that even mean though? Do you have something you want to say but can't say it? Because it all starts with actually having something "deep" you want to write about.

I've just always wanted to write more than technical depth, I'll try though, thank you

Tchaikovskys 1812 overture really moved me today. Maybe get invaded by France?

Deep is extremely subjective. What you don't consider deep could be a completely different experience for a listener. Write lyrics in a deliberately vague matter. Like for example, if the topic is about a bad break-up. Don't use names, reduce the frequency of using direct identifying pronouns. Talk to this hypothetical ex as though you're writing a letter. Talk about your feelings, make abstract comparisons. Explore complicated thoughts. Use imagery and vivid description. Let the listener interpret the lyrics, don't attempt to steer them towards what you're saying.

  • You got to scan yourself and your world for content. Take an inventory of your emotions what are you feeling but don't just name those emotions describe those emotions and try to pinpoint their cause or origin. Next think of things that connect to a represent this feeling, look for imagery be descriptive use figurative language. Reconsider everything from a different standpoint and try to write from that other standpoint. Draw from an experience that you've had, can you interpolate your experiences into something more abstract? Could your missed doctor's appointment be a clue into something deeper? Or was it because you were on a metaphorical Odyssey? At the very outset just say what is this song about. At the end leave The Listener wanting more or questioning something about what you said. A lot of what I compose goes through this process and ultimately a big indicator is if I feel like only I could come up with this that it doesn't represent anyone else's thoughts feelings or ideas. Hey sorry for the big dump of text I just do speech to text when I don't feel like typing. Hope this helps

  • You just talk about your life experiences in a honest, slightly theatrical, and technically high level way

At this point most rapper listeners will acknowledge your skill even if the don’t like your music

  • Pick a deep experience you’ve had and get to writing/talking about it.

  • You write something and convince other people it’s deep to the point they will argue with people that disagree

  • Experiences and practice

  • Probably just takes practice.  Practice writing things that mean something to you and just try to do it often.

  • Just write how you genuinely feel about life and make it rhyme

  • Study English grammar and punctuation and the works of great English speaking writers.

  • Deep lyrics, to me at least, are a byproduct of experiencing and thinking a lot about how you felt, and why you feel that way.

  • If you have something to say, you'll be able to tell it. Listen to your heart

Edit; if you mean deep in an exploratory sense, then study and attempt to put all that you've learned into rhyme format. Find things that interlink with said subject that you might already know about and you can build entendres out of deep stuff that way. Make things even deeper

  • This will probably be unhelpful but you seriously just gotta do it and stay focused on the topic

  • Easiest way: look for a song with the things you want to learn, write in that style and try understand why artist used the devices in theyre verse.

Dont reinvent the wheel start your own brand

  • Ask yourself what Shakespeare would write. Use metaphors and dual meanings, and serious subjects.

  • What is deep? There are more than one ways to answer that, but for sake of illustration, I’m gonna pick one.

Deep is when you comment on something real/important/meaningful, while acknowledging complexities, and presenting it in a way that feels real.

So let’s try applying that concept. Drugs are real, so if you say “drugs are bad,” then are we at deep commentary yet? No. We need to add the complexity. “Drugs are bad but they help me cope” is moving a little closer to deep, but we are still not presenting that in a way that makes it feel real. You can illustrate specifically how they’re bad and how they help you cope. “Crack killed Ronnie. He wasted his life and died of an overdose alone, but what’s that say for me if I need to be high to handle taking on the phone?” Now we have a complicated and believable situation. It is not perfect writing but there’s depth to that scenario.

Sorry my example of deep writing isn’t better. I hope my point is legible anyway.

  • Reccomend just writing / recording every single day, especially when you don’t feel like it… those I don’t feel like it sessions usually yield some gold imo.. you don’t get deep without digging. Gonna be a lot of shit you gotta wade thru too , don’t let that stuff discourage.

  • Stop lying in your music

always that one mf being miserable in the comments lmao

? You asked the question I answered. When you are truthful in your music you will naturally come up with shit that sounds deep. When you write entendres you sometimes get stuck in a framework in which you have to necessarily say smth untruthful. Find the balance. Don’t be the miserable mf you talking about

my fault lmao, thought you was being a dick 😭

  • How old are you?

  • Write stuff you would be scared for people to hear. Don't make it up. Be honest. Don't worry about what people will think about it. If it means something to you it will mean something to someone else

  • Maybe you're being too literal

Maybe it's not my girlfriend, broke up with me. It's Heartbreak is a vast desert you left me in. Not a drop of hope to quench my thirst.

Instead of just naming what you feel. Try and associate it with an image, I'm not saying that's specifically good, but it doesn't necessarily have to be if you write it correctly, make a powerful image in your head and use poetic licence the shit I said doesn't make any sense really logically but it's vague about the situation and specific about the emotion so anyone can hear that and, their brain will put an imagine in their head of a desert, make them think of someone they personally lost a break up a death etc etc and you'll connect with them without doing anything they're doing the work, I've had people explain what they get from a song long I've written a d it's not even close to what I was writing it about or trying to say, but it stuck with them and they connected with it. And they're also right cause art is about interpretation, give them something to interpret.

  • It’s called getting inspired. Inspiration doesn’t necessarily mean you found bliss. I write dark sad shtt all the time that my music draws out sometimes or it’s a current situation I may be in or going thru. No matter what though………never write sad or dark toned lyrics if it’s not real thing for you. You can spot it from a mile away and it’s way beyond off putting. I really don’t want to use the word “cringe” but it’s absolutely cringe at the least when I hear it. Really…….you should “just” write. Whatever comes out is what it is. At least for me it is. I don’t ever sit down and say I’m writing something now, what should I write about. If I have to ask, I’m not inspired in that moment. I never have a topic and then go either. For me I’ve just found it’s pre-filters out any synthetic. And just gives you back honest & raw

  • I listen to music that my mom would listen to. Normally, older music has a lot more depth in it, topics that hit closer to home, adult insight.

Artist from yesteryear are better at describing these emotions as well since they made music and interacted before the internet era.

  • Gotta be on your sad boy shit sometimes

  • Introspection

  • Have a deep topic and speak on it

  • Try things like meditation, journaling, reading classic books on philosophy and spirituality, and switch out as much of your media consumption as you can from pop culture to knowledge acquisition. Deep lyrics come from deep thoughts. Deep thoughts come from impressing deep consciousness on your mind.
