I really want to know what did he use but I especially need to know what mic did he use. I know that he made the album in FL studio.

  • He used a cracked version of FL which didn't let him Save beats so he had to export each one.

I remember he also used GarageBand too.

It was reported he was so poor he didn't have headphones and used earbuds so he almost certainly used a budget mic. If he wasn't in a real studio he was probably using an inexpensive dynamic mic like the Shure SM58 which would help eliminate background sounds.

For later work he used a Rode NT1-A condenser mic.

That isn't cracked fl lol that's just the normal demo version, full functionality but you just can't save anything

That would probably help my workflow tbh. If I just had to make a thing from start to finish and then export before moving on? Can’t go back and change the volume of the snare 39 times?

Yeah honestly with working in a daw and having basically limitless directions and tiny edits to choose from it can be hard to get shit done hahaha

I switched to a more hardware based set up last year and I find it way easier to finish shit because of the limitations

Every producer i see that has a lot of placements/is well established saves and exports when they’re done with the beat every time. I’ve started doing this too and it’s great. You get better at arranging because you’re doing it more and not leaving things as loops going “eh ill finish it later”

You build your ability to turn nothing into a finished product ready to send out as fast as possible. Eventually you don’t even miss the ability to tweak and change shit because you’re so much better at getting shit right the first time around

Well if it's just some loop that lives on your DAW, it ain't really a beat. A rapper can't rap on it otherwise. What else are you gonna do, send them the project file? lol

Obviously. My point is they export it as soon as they’re done making it before moving on instead of leaving it there with the intention of coming back to tweak things or add things

Exactly. If it's done, it's done. Export. No reason to not.

Yes, and that’s the point im trying to make. You know how so many producers talk about having a ton of random project files and ideas? Opening a daw and having a finished, exported product in less than an hour is something most people don’t do

You're writing as if I'm arguing against you. lol

And I have plenty of unfinished beats or ideas. Nothing wrong with that. I wasn't able to complete whatever in the moment, but it was deemed worthy enough to save and not scrap. I'll go through any leftovers in 6 months and make sure there's nothing worth keeping and continuing. Sanity check and cleanup.

Do some producers need to stop fiddle fucking and just get on with it? Absolutely. But there's a time and place for everything.

What people really need to do is be a little more introspective and figure out what they need. Figure out where they're lacking. Figure out what works for them.

Setting arbitrary limitations can be helpful. Is it something everyone should do? Probably not. Is it something someone should always do? Probably not.

My mistake. It’s hard to tell tone through text sometimes so I actually did think you were arguing lol. I agree with you, there is a place for saving things and iterating sometimes. That said, for trap beats especially, that condensed and spontaneous workflow can do wonders imo. It did for me. I’d still get shit finished but the ratio of projects to completed stuff is WAYY higher for me now. It may not even be that good in the end, but exporting it sets in stone in a way, and I focus on improving what I need to rather than just going “hmm I’ll fix it later” and making the same mistakes in the next projects since I can “fix it later”

I've given folks 8 bars and they made songs out of em. I just used their lyrics and completed the beat around em. I kinda like it that way sometimes. I tend to create better transitions and breaks when I know whas being said. Otherwise I'll structure the beat in the average song format for them and then do it all over once they record their vocals.

I didn't literally mean it was impossible, but thanks for the anecdote regardless. Totally understand what you mean in regards to transitions. I always enjoy when I'm able to still edit the beat after recording is done.

Thas almost the best part to me. I get the song, do my duty, send it to em and they're blown away like damn that shit so much better now.

Exactly. So many really underestimate the power of a good transition. Good to hear you've got it locked!

That’s what I figured but that’s what he said!

You can save everything, you just can’t re-open/open saved projects. Essentially everything had to be “finished” before moving on to the next beat.

  • He used reason

Definitely used reason i remember my homie finding the yonkers synth and us laughing at how sick it was

  • Second this, I remember almost all the sounds were stock reason synth preset sounds. Yonkers especially, that full beat is just Reason V4 all over it.

  • If you're concerned about what MIC he used for an album then you need to stop and think about what actually makes a difference in music production. You could have $10 million dollars of the best equipment in the world and if you don't know how to string together 2 chords to make a nice phrase, you're gonna be ass regardless. Stop asking these types of questions

Just buy an SM58 and call it a day bud

I was just curious. I'll probably buy some cheap mic for 50 bucks max.

  • some of the songs were recorded straight off the macbook mic lol

  • Whatever was at Syd’s house

  • lol you gotta crack FL to get that sound.
